What Our Expert Scouts Say

Papi Tino's Llc
December 04, 2012

Papi Tino's is a low-lit, low-slung bungalow on east sixth, whose live piano and twinkly lights make it ideal for a low-key date night. While you're there, split a spicy Mezcalito Margarita, and enjoy a taste bud tingling goodnight kiss.

Tips for Papi Tino's Llc

Enter a little house with romantic tables scattered about the front yard. The vibe, service, food and drinks rock. Order a spicy margarita to pair with fabulous ceviche and other specialties of the house.

Get air-conditioning and bigger water glasses!. Drove by a few times before realizing this was indeed the place where we were meeting friends. It was a relatively mild evening in early April, but the fact that the place was very busy and -GET THIS- did not have air conditioning (in Austin!) meant that I was hot and uncomfortable by the time we left. Our waitress was adorable and very attentive. There was a piano player who was good and it was a nice quirky touch, but the music combined with the burlap wall covering near where we were sitting meant that we kept having to raise our voices and repeat ourselves to have a conversation, which was a bit annoying.

Do not go here expecting a lot of food. Or even water, for that matter, which is served in teeny little glass jars (so adorable, so shabby chic, so THIRSTY!) a bit larger than babyfood jars and smaller than most jelly jars. The chips and salsa are a joke... pretty greasy/overcooked looking and for six hungry women we had ** 2 saucers ** of chips. Really...saucers, not even salad-plate sized. Tortilla chips belong in a bowl, anyway, not on a flat plate, and ideally in something which can hold more than about ten chips at a time. They are clearly going for the hipster/Anthropologie date crowd who apparently don't eat that much anyway, but the portions are medium/small and you have to pay extra for things that are usually included as a matter of course, like rice, beans, etc.

It was not a bad experience, but there are way too many good TexMex joints in Austin for me to ever want to go back there, especially any later in the year than April, as it would be far too hot to be comfortable.
