What Is Acne and What Causes It?Acne is an inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit (psu) which contains the sebaceous gland and a hair follicle. When the pore to the psu becomes blocked by other cells, sebum (an oily substance that lubricates our hair and skin and is made by the sebaceous gland ) can’t reach the surface of the skin. This allows bacteria to grow inside the pore. The bacteria attract white blood cells eventually causing the entire pore to become inflamed. Subsequently, the follicle wall breaks down and the sebum, skin cells, and bacteria erupt to form lesions or pimples.
Types of Acne:Acne has many forms. These may be interrelated, meaning they develop from one form to the other, or may be independent in origin. Comedonal acne includes closed comedos (whiteheads) and open comedos (blackheads). In another type, you may see inflamed papules (typical pimples) which shows redness but no pus is visible. Pustules are bumps in which you can see pus. Cystic acne contains pus and runs deep in the skin. These can be painful and can cause scarring.
What Can Be Done for My Acne?Treatment for acne varies depending on the type and severity of your lesions, as well your skin type, gender, age, and lifestyle. Various treatment options that may be used alone, but frequently in conjunction include:
Actinic Keratoses ( Aks)
What Is Actinic Keratoses ?Actinic keratoses (aks) are dry, rough, or scaly patches on the skin. They tend to occur in areas of the body that have received long-term sun exposure such as: face, neck, scalp, ears, lips, arms, and backs of hands. Aks can sometimes progress to squamous cell carcinoma (scc), a type of skin cancer that can be life threatening. If the lesion is especially large or thick, a biopsy may be performed to determine if scc is present. The american cancer society, the skin cancer foundation, and the american academy of dermatology all recommend that people with aks seek treatment for them.
What Causes Actinic Keratoses?Long–term exposure to the sun is the single most significant cause of aks, so the best defense against them is a comprehensive sun protection program that includes wearing protective clothing, avoiding mid day sun, staying in the shade as much as possible, and wearing a broad–spectrum sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (spf).
What Treatment Options Are Available?Several treatment options are available and may be used alone or in combination. Factors used to choose the most appropriate treatment method include size, number, location, and stage of lesions as well as the persons age, heath, medical history, and history of previous treatment. Other factors to consider include the the patient’s occupation, cosmetic expectations and treatment preferences as well as adherence(willingness to self treat for several weeks).these options include:
Athlete's Foot
What Is Athlete's Foot?Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is a caused by a mold-like fungi group called dermatophytes that infect the superficial layer of the skin. The organisms that cause the infection thrive in the moist area between the toes and sometimes on other parts of your foot or hands. It can cause itching, stinging, and burning. In severe cases the skin can crack and bleed. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be spread by human to human, object to human, or animal to human contact.
Ringworm of the Body (Tinea Corporis)Red, scaly, circular rash on the top layer of skin
Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris)Affects the genitals, upper inner thighs, and buttocks
Scalp Ringworm (Tinea Capitis)Most common in children, red itchy patch on scalp, leaving baldness
Nail Fungus (Onychomycosis)Thick, crumbly, ragged, or discolored nails. May develop with or without other signs and symptoms of athlete’s foot
What Increases Risk of Contracting Athlete's Foot?Wearing damp socks or closed shoes, especially if they’re plastic lined excessive sweating share personal items with someone who has the infection ( i.E towels, rugs, shoes, locker rooms, bath) have a weakened immune system
How Is Athlete's Foot Diagnosed? The diagnosis is based primarily on the appearance of the skin. If tests are performed, they may include:
Koh ExamSkin scraping show fungus under the microscope
Fungal CultureSkin scrapings are able to grow in the lab
Skin Lesion BiopsySpecial stain demonstrates fungus under the microscope
How Can Athlete Foot Be Treated?Keep feet (including between toes) clean and dry. Wear light and airy shoes with a breathable material and absorbent socks such as cotton. The fungus does not like dry areas. Medicated foot powder or antifungal foot creams such as clotrimazol, miconazole, or tolnaftate can help. If the infection doesn’t clear in 2-4 weeks or recurs, you may require further treatment by a physician. Stronger, prescription strength oral or topical antifungal medications may be needed. Antibiotics may be necessary bacterial infections that occur in addition to the fungus.
Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis
What Is Eczema?Eczema is a general term encompassing various inflamed skin conditions. It is commonly called atopic dermatitis and about 10-20% of the world suffers from it. Atopic dermatitis is characterized by a chronic, relapsing, dry, itchy rash. It is common during childhood, and fortunately it typically improves with age but not always.
What Causes Eczema? The cause is unknown, but it appears to be an abnormal response of the body’s immune system. In people with eczema, the inflammatory response to irritants is exaggerated causing itching and scratching. It tends occur in people with a family history of allergies. Those who are genetically predisposed and then are exposed to triggers may develop eczema. Many triggers have been identified and vary from person to person such as harsh soaps, detergents, exposure to wool., low humidity, sweat, sudden changes in temperature, contact from juices from fresh fruit and meats, dust mites, animal dander or saliva, and upper respiratory infections. Even stress can aggravate an existing flare-up.
What Does the Rash Look Like?It is most often characterized by dry, red, itchy patches. The skin may become thickened and darker from chronic scratching. Eczema can occur on most parts of the body. In infants it can start on the cheeks, scalp, neck, or cover a large part of the body,. With increasing age, the rash may be limited to the bend of the elbows, knees, and on the back of the hands and feet. Atopic dermatitis may become infected by bacteria, yeast, or viruses. Bacterial infection is the most common. If this occurs, your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic to control the infection.
How Can Eczema Be Prevented? The severity and frequency of flare-ups can be reduced by moisturizing frequently, avoiding sudden changes in temperature or humidity, sweating or overheating, harsh soaps, detergents, and solvents. Also reducing stress and avoiding environmental factors that trigger allergies such as pollens, mold, mites, and animal dander may help.
What Medical Treatments Are Available for Eczema?Treatment is evidence and patient preference based and must be tailored by the physician to each individual. Some treatment options include: moisture and emollients, topical steroids and immunomodulators (tims), as well as oral steroids and antihistamines. In more resistant cases, topical and oral antibiotics, uv light therapy, cyclosporine, or methotrexate. Many of these treatment options have potential side effects /adverse effects or require special monitoring and should be discussed with your physician.

Indoor Tanning
Just Four Annual Visits Multiplies Skin Cancer RisksNew research indicates that people who tan indoors four times a year increase their risk of developing the non-melanoma skin cancers basal and squamous cell carcinoma by 15 percent, and their risk of melanoma by 11 percent. Non-melanoma skin cancer can be disfiguring and sometimes life-threatening, and melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, will kill an estimated 8,790 people in the us this year alone. While is has been known for some time that indoor ultraviolet (uv) radiation tanning heightens the risk of developing all forms of skin cancer, with this study, researchers have more precisely quantified the risks. Investigators led by mingfeng zhang, md, research fellow at brigham and women’s hospital and harvard medical school in boston, examined data about tanning bed use collected from more than 73,000 female nurses in the nurses’ health study ii between 1989 and 2009. the researchers looked at indoor tanning among subjects during both high school and college, and then from ages 25 to 35. in addition to demonstrating a dose-response affect (that is, the more extensive their indoor tanning, the higher their risk of developing skin cancer), the numbers suggest that younger tanners are especially at risk: tanning bed use during high school and college conferred a higher risk of basal cell carcinoma (bcc) than did tanning bed use between ages 25 and 35, dr. zhang said. In fact, just one indoor tanning session a year while the subjects were in high school or collage boosted their risk of developing bcc by 10 percent, and those who tanned indoors more than six times a year had an 82% higher risk of developing bcc than non-tanners. The final version of the research paper is not yet available, but the authors presented their findings at a recent meeting of the association for cancer research (aacr).

What Kind of Treatment Is Available for Hair Loss? With correct diagnosis, many people with hair loss can be helped. There are several treatment options available for hair loss, depending on the cause. Topical minoxidil (for men and women) and oral finasteride (for men only) have been shown to help in the re-growth of hair or slow hereditary hair loss. Hair loss caused by diseases can be reversed with treatment of the underlying cause.
Hyperhidrosis ( Excessive Sweating)Severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, or intolerable sweating, is a medical condition that involves hyperactive sweat glands. Sweat is your body’s temperature regulator. In severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body's normal requirements. Severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis often goes undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and untreated due to lack of awareness. Botox® treatment has been approved by the fda for excessive sweating. Botox® treatment helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. The effects of botox® treatment for this problem last an average of six to seven months. Treatment is covered by most drug and medical benefit plans!
Keratosis Pilaris
What Is Keratosis Pilaris?Keratosis pilaris (kp) is a common skin condition that causes rough sandpaper-like small bumps usually on the upper arms and thighs. It can also be found on the back, buttocks, and cheeks. Often the surrounding skin is dry. Kp is most commonly seen in children and young adults. It is a benign and non-contagious condition that doesn’t have long-term health implications.
What Causes Kp?Kp results from the build up of keratin, a hard protein that protects your skin. The keratin forms a scaly plug that blocks the opening of hair follicles causing the bumps. Why keratin builds up is unknown, but it may occur in association with other skin disorders such as ichthyosis vulgaris and atopic dermatitis. Kp tends to run in families often occurs in otherwise healthy individuals. It is usually worse during the winter months.
What Kind of Treatment Is Available for Keratosis Pilaris? No single treatment universally improves kp. Lubricants or emollients may help with the dryness, but do not tend to clear the bumps. Mild peeling agents are most effective in opening the plugged hair follicles by removing the excess skin. Each affected person may respond differently to therapies, but over-the-counter or prescription urea creams or retinoid preparations (such as differin, retin–a, or tazorac) are the most commonly used therapies. Lifestyle changes may help control the condition such as avoidance of vigorous scrubbing or removal of the plugs. After bathing, gently blot dry skin so that some moisture remains on skin followed by the appropriate cream. Therapy must be continued on a regular basis to be effective and the treatments do not work with all patients.
Molluscum Contagiosum
What Is Molluscum Contagiosum (Mc)?Mollusca are smooth, pearly, flesh-colored round skin growths caused by they virus molluscum contagiosa virus (mcv). They are usually 1-5mm in diameter any have a central pit. They are generally not painful but may itch and become irritated and frequent spread to nearby areas. The infection is most common in children age 1-10 years of age. Mc can affect any areas of the body, but most commonly affects the trunk, arms, and legs. It is typically spread from direct contact including skin-to-skin, scratching, sexual contact, or shared items such as towels or clothes. The virus can be spread amongst children at day care or school.
What Type of Treatment Is Available Mc?Although mc may resolve in 2-3 months on its own, the lesions spread easily, my become infected, may be itchy or irritated, and are sometimes cosmetically objectionable. For these reasons, they are often removed. The treatment depends on the age of the patient and the size and location of the growths. Freezing with liquid nitrogen is one form of treatment. Another way to remove molluscum is by scraping the bump or removing the center, a treatment that is performed after numbing the area with a special cream. Sometimes other topical treatments are used that can be applied at home with varying degrees of success. All forms of treatment may cause some discomfort. New lesions may form while existing ones are being treated. Any lesions large enough to be seen will be treated. Multiple treatments are usually required.
Psoriasis
Exacerbating Factors & Triggers of Psoriasis:
Skin or Systemic Infections Ie: Streptococcal Pharyngitis
Skin Injury From Cuts, Scrapes, or Burns
Certain Medications Such as Beta-Blocking Agents, Antimalarials, and Lithium
Emotional Stress and Anxiety
Smoking and Drinking Alcohol
Hormonal Changes
Rubbing and Scratching Due to Itching
Types of Psoriasis:
PlaqueThe most common form, characterized by raised, inflamed, red lesions covered by a silvery white scale
GuttateCharacterized by small rain-drop-like lesions
PustularCharacterized by weeping lesions and intense scaling
InverseCharacterized by intense inflammation
ErythrodermicCharacterized by intense shedding and redness of the skin
What Treatment Options Are Available for Psoriasis?Treatment options include topical or oral medications, biologic agents that work by blocking the activation of the cells that trigger the development of psoriasis, and light therapy
Rosacea
What Causes Rosacea? The exact cause is unknown. Experts believe that there is a vascular cause or that blood vessels are a significant component in the cause since flushing is a an essential part of the rash. Demodex (microscopic skin mites) are found in the follicles of about half of those with rosacea. Clinical investigations are debating the role of these mites. H.Pylori, a bacteria from the gi tract, has been suggested as a cause because there is a hormone that the stomach produces that encourages flushing. However, recent studies have shown that h.Pylori was no more common in patients with rosacea than in those without.
What Factors Aggravate Rosacea?Factors that stimulate flushing, such as hot beverages, alcohol, spicy foods, sun exposure, wind, exercise, emotional factors, as well as certain medications frequently exacerbate the condition. Perfumed cosmetics and other topical irritants such as scrubs, toners, acetone, and alcohols should be avoided. Sun protection is a must and we recommend broad spectrum sunscreens.
What Treatments Are Available for Rosacea? The presentation of rosacea can vary from person to person; therefore, the treatment must be tailored for each patient. Treatments include low-dose oral antibiotics and/or topical therapies to bring the condition under immediate control followed by topical therapy for long-term control. Laser treatments may be used to remove visible blood vessels, reduce redness, or correct disfigurement of the nose.
Skin Cancer
Risk Factors for Skin Cancer:
Fair Skin That Burns or Freckles EasilyMultiple moles (especially if there are more than 100) history of sunburns excessive sun exposure without sun protection use of tanning beds family history of skin cancer personal history of skin cancer weakened immune system such as is seen organ transplant patients
How to Reduce Risk of Skin Cancer:Slip, slap, slop is the name of one of the most successful health campaigns ever. It was launched in 1981 by the australian cancer council. In later years, it was extended to include sunglasses and shade.
Three Most Common Types of Skin Cancer:
Basal Cell Carcinoma (Bcc)Is the most common type of skin cancer and may present as a sore that just won‘t heal. This type is easiest to treat and cure, and it usually does not spread to other parts of the body. If left untreated, can be quite disfiguring and be more difficult to remove. It can be inherited, but usually occurs in patients who have had repeated sun exposure.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (Scc)Is another common type of skin cancer usually appearing on sun-exposed skin. It is more aggressive than bcc and can spread (metastasize) to sites elsewhere in the body. It may develop from a precancerous lesion which presents as a scaly, crusty bump on sun–damaged skin.
Malignant Melanoma (Mm)Is the least common but most serious form of skin cancer. It may present as a mole with uneven borders, with different colors, or a recent change in appearance. Melanoma most commonly occurs on the back of men, and the lower legs of women but can occur in other places. It can stem from a mole that has been present for many years or a new lesion. If treated early, results are good.
Abcdes of Malignant Melanoma:
A = AsymmetryOne half does not match the other half
B = Border Irregularity-The edges are notched or ragged
C = Color Variation-Varied shades of tan, blacl and brown
D = DiameterGreater than 6 millimeters
E = EvolvingSignificant change in size, shape, or shade of color
Treatments for Skin Cancer Depend On:
Warts
What Are Warts?Warts are local benign (non-cancerous) skin growths caused by the human papilloma virus (hpv). They can grow on any part of the body and may appear as small, flat, or cauliflower-appearing bumps. They may simply be a nuisance or can bleed and cause pain when they’re bumped. Since they are caused by a virus, they are contagious and can spread to other parts of the body.
What Are Some Types of Warts? The most common type are dome-shaped and frequently found on backs of fingers, toes, and knees. Plantar warts are found on the bottom (plantar part) of the feet. Flat (planar) warts may arise on the face, legs, and other parts of the body. Periungual warts are found around or under the nail. Filiform warts are longer and frequently appear on the face. Genital warts are found on the genitals of men or women.
What Treatments Are Available for Warts? The treatment chosen to treat your wart depends on its location, type, size, and your type of skin. Warts can appear and disappear with no identifiable reason even after an apparent cure. If you ignore them they eventually go away but this may take months or even years. Since we can’t kill the wart virus there is no single perfect treatment for them. Various treatment options are available. Remember, treatment options and success vary depending on the type of wart and where it is located. Some common treatment options include:

Chemical Peels
What Is a Chemical Peel?Chemical peels are topically applied acids formulas that revitalize the skin surface by creating an even and controlled shedding of the skin cells. This allows new layers to be exposed, creating a fresh appearance and smoother texture to the skin surface.
Types of Chemical Peels
Superficial PeelThis peel is designed to help smooth coarse, dry skin, improve the texture of sun-damaged skin, and even out skin tone. The recovery is generally rapid and usually involves some minor flaking. A series of treatments is ordinarily recommended to obtain the desired result over a period of time. Typically, there is no down time and with appropriate sun protection, you can resume regular activities immediately.
Medium PeelContain a stronger potency of acids. Medium peels target the epidermis and upper dermis and cause the skin to slough within 5 to 7 days. Immediately after treatment the skin has a red appearance and is occasionally accompanied by swelling. Within a day the skin turns brown in color, and after 3 or 4 days the skin initiates the peeling process.
Deep PeelProduces the most dramatic results. This peel is recommended for treating wrinkles, scars, blemishes and, in some cases, precancerous skin lesions. A deep peel targets the dermis. In some cases, anesthesia is required during the procedure to reduce the warm to hot stinging sensation. After a deep peel, skin is red and can result in some swelling and blistering. A crust may form and the skin will turn brown just prior to peeling. Many layers of the skin will peel over a period of 1 to 2 weeks. As ointment may be given to keep the area moist. Temporarily, the new skin will have the color and sensation of significant sunburn, which will gradually fade to your normal skin color.
What Are the Benefits of a Chemical Peel?A chemical peel can improve sun damage, acne scarring, blotchy pigmentation, fine wrinkling, accelerate the production of new cells and can help to detect early pre-cancerous skin lesions. A peel can also improve acne-prone skin and clogged pores, helps control oily skin and is not limited to face, and can be performed on the neck, chest, hands, arms, shoulders, and legs- just about anywhere.
Who Are Candidates?Anyone who wants to improve the overall health and appearance of their skin. Your skin type and the results you are aspiring to achieve will determine if you are a candidate, as well as which class of peel is most appropriate for you. Chemical peels are increasingly popular with those who are unhappy about acne scarring, sun-damaged skin, age spots, freckles, fine lines, rough skin, and uneven pigmentation.
What Are the Side Effects?Side effects are rare and usually temporary. Some side effects include uneven pigmentation, redness, and very infrequent scarring particularly if the skin is not cared for appropriately. Sun protection is crucial to minimize the risk of side effects. A treatment program of individually suited products and sun protection will benefit your skin’s ability to maintain the results of the peel. You can decrease the likelihood of side effects by carefully following the instructions of your treatment provider.

Sugaring & Waxing
Is Sugaring a New Method of Hair Removal?Sugaring dates back hundreds of year as a method to get rid of unwanted hair. It is believed to have originated in ancient egypt.
Can I Use the Sugaring Technique Only on My Legs? You can use the sugaring method for hair removal on your legs, as well as:Options:
Arms, Underarms, Upper back, Upper lip, Legs lower, Legs full, Eyebrows, Bikini line, Brazilian bikini
Is Sugaring the Same as Waxing? Both techniques remove hair, but sugaring is said to be less painful than the regular waxing. This is because the sugaring paste attaches only to the hair and not the skin as well. Sugaring paste is meant to be used at a lower temperature than wax, so there is less chance of burning the skin during use.
How Do I Prepare the Area Before Applying the Sugaring Paste?Make sure the area is clean and dry before you start. After drying the skin, sprinkle on some baby powder to absorb any excess moisture. This extra step will help to ensure the skin is completely dry.
WaxingIs a method of hair removal which removes the hair from the root cause. New hair will not grow back in the previously waxed area for two to eight weeks. Almost any area of the body can be waxed, including: eyebrows, face, bikini area, legs, arms, back, abdomen and feet.

What Is a Botox Cosmetic Treatment Like?Botox cosmetic procedures are fast, simple, and minimally invasive, and no anesthesia is required. Injections are administered with an ultra-fine needle directly into the area being treated. Discomfort is minimal and brief, and once complete, there is usually no discomfort. Most people return directly to work or normal activity following treatment. So there’s no recovery or downtime.
What Areas Can Be Treated with Botox Cosmetic?Botox cosmetic treatments can be performed in a number of locations, including between your brows, eye area, smile lines, and neck. Fotofacial Rf/Ipl
What Is the Fotofacial Rf?Fotofacial rf brings a unique combination of intense pulse light(ipl) and powerful radio frequency energy that act synergistically to enhance the skin. This procedure has increased in popularity and recognition to the point where it is now one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in north america. This remarkable and innovative treatment modality uses an elos (electro-optical synergy) technology thar is fda- approved for facial rejuvenation.
Who Are Candidates for Fotofacialrf/ Ipl?Sun damage is very prevalent in residents of texas. Most people who live here for even a few years exhibit some evidence of sun damage in the form of dilated capillaries, brown spots, diffuse redness over the face, neck, chest, and hands. Sun exposure also accelerates wrinkles around the eyes, cheeks, and mouth. Those people who have noticeable signs of excessive sun damage including redness, dilated capillaries, wrinkles, brown spots, areas of diffuse pigmentation, and coarse skin texture are all ideal candidates for fotofacialrf/ipl. Rosacea, a exceedingly common skin affliction is manifest by facial redness, spontaneous uncontrolled flushing and blushing, and acne breakouts. While topical and oral antibiotics reduce the associated acne breakouts, until ipl there was no effective treatment for the redness, flushing, and blushing. Now this common skin disorder is readily and effectively treated by fotofacial/rf. Flushing, blushing, and redness can be reduced as much as 80% in many cases, and acne breakouts improved substantially as well.
What Is a Fotofacialrf/Ipl Treatment Like? How Long Do They Take? Are They Painful?Fotofacial/rf treatments are simple, convenient, and quick. After covering your eyes with protective glasses, we place a thin layer of cool gel over the treated area, press the ipl/rf device onto your skin and flash. The flashes are repeated until the entire area has been treated. Depending on the size of the area, a fotofacial/rf treatment usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes. Any pain associated with the flashes is reduced to a bare minimum with a special device that cools your skin. After a treatment, you can put on makeup immediately and return to your regular activities.
Do I Need More Than One Treatment?Fotofacialrf/ipl does not exert its full beneficial effect in only one treatment; they must be repeated over several weeks. Three to five treatments over the span of twelve weeks are often required. That is, one treatment every three weeks. To optimize results, we often combine treatments with superficial skin peels between the fotofacial/rf treatments.
What Type of Results From Fotofacialrf/Ipl Can I Expect? How Much Improvement Will I See?Our fotofacial/rf program consists of treatments three weeks apart. In the interval weeks between fotofacial/ rf treatments to maximize the benefits, we combine fotofacial/rf with superficial peels, either microdermabrasion or a light chemical peel. These superficial peels remove the layer of dead skin that can decrease the ipl/rf penetration of the skin. Additionally, we treat the skin with a variety of skin care products, based on our patient's skin type. Some individuals, particularly those with darker skins and/or heavy pigmentation may require several weeks of skin care products prior to initiating the fotofacial/rf program. We see usually a 75% improvement in redness, dilated capillaries, brown spots, hyperpigmentation and skin texture with fotofacial/rf. Improvement in fine wrinkles, is variable. Overall, your skin will look brighter, fresher, and more youthful. It will shine again as it once did when you were younger.
Are There Any People Who Cannot Undergo Fotofacial/Rf?Fotofacial/rf is not indicated in patients with connective tissue disease or auto immune disorders. It cannot be done during pregnancy, nor can it be done on recently sun-tanned skin (we wait until the tan fades) or in those who may receive excess sun exposure for a few weeks following treatment. It cannot be used on patients taking accutane. Photosensitive medications such as some antibiotics, anti-anxiety drugs, sulfa drugs may be a contraindication. Care must be taken in patients who get fever blister attacks on the lips (cold sores). An anti-herpes medication can be taken to avoid activation of this virus. There is no age limit for fotofacial/rf.
How Long Will the Beneficial Effects of Fotofacial/Rf Last? Will I Need Additional Treatments to Maintain the Results? After your initial treatments we recommend maintenance treatments every 6 months. However, even without regular follow up treatments, the positive results of our fotofacial/rf treatments can last a considerable length of time. Of course, sun exposure, smoking, aging, etc., can reduce the longevity of these benefits.
What Conditions Will This Treatment Not Help?Fotofacial/rf won't treat frown lines, sometimes known as lines of expression on the face, especially the forehead and between the brows. These are very effectively treated by botox® cosmetic injections which dr. honeycutt provides. Fotofacial/rf is not a substitute for a face-lift and will not help baggy or sagging skin. It will not cure the puffiness around the eyes for which blepharoplasty surgery is usually performed. It is not a treatment for skin cancer. It won't remove bumpy moles, but can reduce their pigment. Although, it will remove acquired freckling, genetic freckles usually return after treatment. It will not remove seborrheic keratoses, also known as age spots. It also will not remove sebaceous hyperplasias, a benign growth of oil glands in the skin.
Are There Any Side Effects? Most side effects of fotofacial/rf are mild and of short duration. These can consist of short-term discomfort during the treatment. There is sometimes mild pinkness immediately following treatment, lasting less than 24 hours in most people, on rare occasions it may last up to three days. Mild blistering is possible but in our experience occur in less than 1% and usually clear very quickly. A post treatment increase in pigmentation (hyperpigmentation) has been noted on occasion, but is either transient or highly treatable and uncommon. Even more rare is a decrease in pigmentation (hypopigmentation) of the skin after treatments.
What Requirements Are Necessary to Have This Treatment? All patients must have a consultation prior to the procedure. At the time of the first treatment, each patient will be tested to properly evaluate the correct settings for the patient's skin condition and skin type. These parameters will then be recorded in the patients chart for future reference. An informed consent document must be signed prior to the initial treatment.
What if I Have a Low Tolerance for Pain or Sensitive Skin? The application of a cooling tip during the treatment reduces any pain to a minimum. We have extensive experience with patients who have sensitive skin, always listen to their concerns, and treat accordingly.
Who Administers the Treatments? All patients will be evaluated by dr. lori honeycutt as to their suitability for fotofacial/rf. The treatment itself is performed by our experienced registered nurse and licensed esthetician.
Is There Anything Special I Have to Do Prior to a Fotofacial/Rf Treatment?Prior to your appointment, all make-up or creams must be removed. Men will be asked to shave on the day of treatment, prior to their arrival at the office. If any herpetic lesions (cold sores) or bacterial infections are noted on the day of the procedure, the treatment will be canceled until the condition has resolved.
Can I Accomplish the Same Results with Laser Resurfacing as Fotofacial/Rf?No. Laser resurfacing may very well help wrinkles, but it does not affect or remove blood vessels or flushing and deep pigmentation. Further, it usually requires time away from work and your usual every day activities. Downtime is at least two weeks and up to a few months of redness in the treated areas can occur. Laser resurfacing has a valuable place in the treatment of certain conditions of the face, but it is not a substitute for the fotofacial/rf.
Can I Accomplish the Same Results with Chemical Peels, or Microdermabrasion? No, these treatments by themselves cannot achieve the results of fotofacial/rf. Microdermabrasion and light chemical peels enhance the benefits of fotofacial/rf and are used in conjunction with fotofacial/rf treatments.
Will Fotofacial/Rf Treatments Help My Acne Scars?Shallow scars including fine lines may be improved, but "ice pick" type acne scarring and deep scars will not be helped. Laser resurfacing is usually indicated here.
What if the Redness and Sun Damage Extends to My Neck, Chest, Hands, and Arms? Can These Areas Be Treated?Yes, these areas can also be treated successfully, much like the face. Many women especially are delighted to get rid of the "v-neck" effect of sun-damage that has accumulated in these areas from years of sun exposure.
What Do Treatments Cost?Experience has shown us that we cannot predict how many treatments any patient may need. Therefore, we charge for fotofacial/rf on individual treatment basis only. There is an additional charge for the neck, chest, or hands but they are discounted when multiple areas are treated.
I-Lipo
I-Lipo – the Intelligent Alternative to Liposuction
How Does It Work? The i-lipo emits low levels of laser energy, which creates a chemical signal in the fat cells, breaking down the stored triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol and releasing them though channels in the cell membranes. The fatty acids and glycerol are then transported around the body to the tissues that will use them during metabolism to create energy. This process of fatty acid release is a natural response of the body when the body needs to used stored energy reserves, thus i-lipo is not creating any unnatural reaction in the body nor does it affect or damage any surrounding structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves. A period of exercise post treatment will ensure the complete metabolism and thus elimination from the body of the freed fatty acids.
Clinically ProvenIndependent clincal studies have shown i-lipo to be, in some cases, comparable to results achieved by liposuction. Ultrasound imagery shows up to 30% reduction in the fat layer depth after just one treatment. Additional treatments improve results further. Results can be seen immediately after each treatment as the fat cell contents are released. Light exercise post treatment can accelerate the removal of the released fat.
Afordable TreatmentCompared to surgical liposuction and other ultrasound or laser techniques i-lipo is much more affordable with similar results.
Safe and PainlessI-lipo uses low levels of visible red laser light to create a safe and painless bio-stimulation effect in the targeted fat tissue. This stimulation is of the normal chemical pathways which the body uses to free up energy resources when required, so i-lipo does not produce any abnormal effects in the body or damage body tissue such as cells, blood vessels or neighbouring nerves or vital organs. The treatment can be performed on all skin types and body areas where unwanted fat is stored and you can return to normal activity immediately after treatment.
Immediate ResultsResults can be seen immediately after treatment. Typically a 2-4cm loss in abdomen circumference can be achieved with every treatment. A course of 8 treatments is recommended over 4 weeks with 2 treatments per week.
Targeted Fat ReductionI-lipo can target fat reduction in specific problem area. By positioning the laser pads on the target area such as chin, upper arms, abdomen or thighs fat can be broken down and removed specifically from that area. This is a big advantage over diet and exercise which can reduce overall body fat but not shape individual areas.
Innovative Design. The system has been designed with a four pad option totaling 36 individual treatment lasers enabling operators to reduce treatment time.
Manufactured and Maintained in the UK.Unlike other more expensive systems i-lipo is manufactured and maintained in the UK by chromogenex one of the worlds longest established cosmetic laser companies.

Laser Hair Removal
How Laser Hair Removal Work?Laser hair removal is the use of laser energy to produce long-term hair reduction. This is accomplished by producing heat in the hair, which is transferred to the hair follicle, which in-turn produces inflammation, and this inflammation sends a signal to the hair follicle to go into the resting (telogen) phase.
What Is a Laser?First of all, what is a laser? A laser is a device that produces light of a single color or wavelength. The laser produces pulses of high-energy light that is taken up by the desired target. In the case of hair removal, the target is the melanin pigment contained within the hair shaft.
A Delicate BalanceThe tricky part of laser hair removal is targeting the hair shaft without damaging the melanin pigment in the surface of the skin. Thus the laser light has to be on long enough to heat the hair, but not too long to allow that heat to spread to the surrounding skin causing damage. In addition, the darker a patient’s skin, the more difficult it is to avoid injuring the surface of the skin while treating the hair. For this reason, there are three main types of hair removal lasers that are used today, and depending on the thickness of the hair and the color of the skin, one laser may provide benefits as compared to another.
When Performing Laser Hair Removal, Experience MattersIn addition to lasers, intense pulsed light sources are also used for hair removal. These light sources do not emit a single color or wavelength of light, but emit light containing many colors. It may be more difficult to predict the outcome and avoid complications when using light sources that contain many wavelengths of light. However, the results with any device depend upon the experience of the practitioner.
How Many Treatments?Normally, a series of three to five treatments are administered at four to eight week intervals depending upon the location of the hair. Following the initial series of treatments, subsequent treatments are administered, usually at longer and longer intervals. Some number of maintenance of treatments may be needed to keep all the hair away in a given area. After a single treatment, the hair in a given area is usually reduced in amount and thickness for a very long period of time. However, it may not be completely gone. To keep an area completely devoid of hair, maintenance treatments are always required. These maintenance treatments may eventually be required at only yearly intervals or even longer. This depends on the area being treated as well as the individual. As with any other traits in an individual, the frequency of maintenance treatments varies considerably from person to person.
First Session Hurts the MostBecause the laser energy is absorbed in the hair follicle producing heat, there is some sensation when performing laser hair removal. Certain areas of the body hurt more than others during laser hair removal. In addition, patients with very thick, dark hair may experience more discomfort than those with thin hair. This is because the thicker, darker hair will absorb more of the laser light during any given treatment. Generally, the hair becomes thinner and less dense after each subsequent treatment. Therefore, the most discomfort is usually experienced during the first treatment. At adms, we employ a chiller that greatly reduces any discomfort!
What Areas Can Be Treated with Laser?Any area, except adjacent to the eye, where there is excess hair can be treated with laser. The most common areas requested are the face, upper lip, neck, chest, periareolar, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs.
Mesotherapy
The Art of Reducing Fat Through Small InjectionsMesotherapy is a non-surgical technique where medication is injected into the fat layer of the skin, melting the fat beneath the skin and shrinking the fat cells.
How Does Mesotherapy Work?Mesotherapy uses injections of deoxycholate stabilized with phosphatidycholine (a highly purified extract derived from soybeans) in problem areas to dissolve fat and take off inches. Deoxycholate is a bile salt that dissolves the fat. This formulation is obtained from a compounding pharmacy in the united states.
What Is a Mesotherapy Treatment Like?Mesotherapy injections are administered with an ultra-fine needle directly into the area being treated. The injections are rather painless and may be compared to a light pinch.
In What Areas Can Mesotherapy Be Used?Mesotherapy can be utilized on the love handles, abdomen, arms, thighs, hips, chin and more.
What Are the Side Effects of a Mesotherapy Treatment? There is no downtime with the procedure and no apparent side effects, other than initial swelling and bruising.
How Many Treatments Are Recommended? It varies per person, but for most patients a series of three mesotherapy treatments spaced four weeks apart is sufficient. Results are normally seen three to four weeks after the first set of injections.
Does Mesotherapy Get Rid of Cellulite?Mesotherapy only targets fat. However, mesotherapy can also be used in conjunction with other treatments. Independently, each treatment works well in achieving the desired results; but in combination, the results are enhanced.
Restylane
Restylane IsA safe and natural dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds. Collagen is a protein that is found naturally in your body to give support to your skin. With time (or accelerated by sun or smoke damage), your body's collagen weakens forming wrinkles in skin. Restylane® helps to replenish the skin's natural collagen support layer and provide additional support. The result is a smoother face.
How Does Restylane Work?Restylane is a cosmetic dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the human body. The hyaluronic acid also creates volume in the face, giving it a healthy, youthful appearance. When restylane® is injected directly into areas where the body's collagen has been weakened, depressions can be raised to the level of surrounding skin. This smoothes and minimizes facial lines and most types of scars. In addition, skin texture is improved and has a softer and more even tone.
How Is a Restylane Procedure Performed?Restylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultra fine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and quick, and results are practically instantaneous. A dental block or numbing cream may be used before the restylane® treatment to optimize your comfort during the short procedure.Prior to a restylane treatment, patients should avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication or vitamin e supplements. This will minimize any bleeding or bruising.
Where Can Restylane Be Used? The areas most commonly treated are the area between the eyebrows, the nasolabial folds, and the area around the mouth. The treatment can also help to define the lip border and give the appearance of a fuller lip.
How Long Will the Results of a Restylane Treatment Last?Restylane effects last between six and nine months.
Sclerotherapy
What Is Sclerotherapy? In this simple procedure, veins are injected with a sclerosing solution, which causes them to close and thereby fade from view. The treatment only eliminates veins that are no longer used, so there are no effects on blood circulation.
How Quickly Will I See Results? Results occur immediately after treatment. Once the swelling subsides, after a few days, the results are even better.
Is There Downtime Associated with a Sclerotherapy Treatment?Compression stockings should be worn and high-impact activities should be avoided for several days after the procedure. Otherwise, there is no downtime and patients can resume normal activity immediately after the treatment.
