I still say that as a region, Memphis barbecue beats Texas any day...but the Salt Lick. Well, it could be the best barbecue in the country (the Rendezvous still has the best sauce, of course.) Atmosphere plays a part. What's not to love about a place that encourages you to bring a full cooler of beer to dinner. Waiting for a table isn't so bad when you've got live music and cold beer to keep you busy. And then there's the barbecue. Go family style. You may bust a gut, but trust me, it's worth it. Grab some sauce on your way out. You'll crave it, I promise.

Pros: bbq, atmosphere, byob

Cons: long drive

The Extras

Thanks to one of the few open-pit barbecues left in central Texas, you can see the meat smoking over the handmade stone ring.
