A wondrous cavern under the state's major highway.

by Contributor

The Background
Deep under the bustle of Georgetown traffic lies a living world that has been in the making for more than 100,000 years. Workers drilling in the initial stages of I-35 discovered these caverns in 1963.

The Experience
The discovery opened a world of exquisite formations, like the Flowing Stone of Time, the Lake of the Moon, and the "soda straw" ceilings. It also offered a showcase of Pleistocene-age fossil remains including bones of the mammoth and the saber-toothed cat, among many other Ice Age creatures. Many of these bones are still visible to visitors who get to become spelunkers for almost an hour and a half. While trekking about three-fourths of a mile through "caverns measureless to man," visitors get to see for themselves why this is called one of the show caves of Texas. Note also, this cave's not only "cool," its temperature is a lovely 72 degrees year round.
