I just returned home from for my disappointing 30th birthday stay at the Driskill. First, our room was tiny - the bed comprised nearly the entire room - and the air conditioning obnoxiously loud. Second, the lighting in the bathroom was awful - I had to apply make-up by the window - and there was no soap in the shower. Next, my boyfriend had a detailed conversation with the lead concierge three times about where he should take me for a formal dinner. My boyfriend used the word "upscale" to describe the restaurant he would like. After first suggesting a place that was closed, the concierge sent us to a loud restaurant full of people in jeans eating ice cream sundaes. Huh? I looked ridiculously out of place in a dress and nice shoes. Furthermore, the two common sundry items I forgot - dental floss and ibuprofen - were not available at the front desk or anywhere in the hotel. If it hadn't been for the price of this hotel, I would have overlooked some of this. You simply do not get what you pay for. I suggest spending time in the lobby if you would like to visit the Driskill.

My new husband and I arrived at the Driskill in a horse and carriage. I was in my wedding gown and he in his tuxedo. We walked passed 3 door attendants and no one offered to help us with our luggage. I guess your not important if you don't get married at the Driskill. STRIKE ONE My husband had dropped off our bags and our party clothes earlier that afternoon. We had reserved VIP and bottle service at one of our favorite bars for us and our guests after the wedding. THE DRISKILL LOST OUR LUGGAGE FOR OVER AN HOUR!!!!! We didn't get our luggage until really late and barely made it to the bar before it closed. STRIKE TWO My sister paid for the room as a wedding gift. She also paid for a welcome basket and breakfast in the cafe. Of course, we didn't get either. STRIKE THREE If we had been staying here on vacation I wouldn't have minded or gone out of my way to blog. But this was our wedding night!!!!! It was a once in a lifetime experience and the Driskill did nothing to make it special, memorable, or even accomodating. The hotel itself was beautiful but I have had better service at La Quinta!!!!!!!
Pros: location
Cons: service

We booked a room with a king bed and got 2 doubles they said they only had so many kings. But they booked a reservation for a king and did let us know they were not available when we could have changed our mind. It took 3 tries to get the room key to work--the room was very small no morning coffee maker We will go back to the DoubleTree or Omni rather than stay here again Not worth the money
Pros: none really
Cons: over-priced impersoanl service

We have stayed here twice and the service keeps getting better!!! The rooms are on the smaller size, but it is a historic property! The thought that people have been staying here over 100 years is amazing! The food is great, what a cute bakery idea! (TRY THE COOKIES!!!) It is on the expensive side but HELLO...it is a Luxury Hotel!!! The halls of The Driskill feels like an art museum, i had a fun time just walking to get ice! The hotel is right on 6th street with easy access to all of the downtown sites! Great for a historical visit to the capital of Texas!!
Pros: Beautiful Lobby, Great Location, Attentive Staff

The main lobby as an historic property, but the rest of the hotel. Don't waste your money. There are better places in downtown.

We stayed at the Driskill for one night on the 4rth floor - which is I believe part of the original part of the building, it was extremely cramped and the bathroom subpar (ive seen better for cheaper, which was disapointing because it was renovated) the room itself was charming tho. The bar and lobby are really great but you can walk in off the street to see that. The cafe wasnt all that great I felt, kinda cheesy - texan named dishes that werent texan quality. I will definatly visit the bar next time tho its great. Dont waste your money - buy a tour package that tours austins history and they will take you there for that as well....

The lobby is beautiful. The rooms are tiny and VERY expensive. The staff are arrogant and rude. I stayed there for my honeymoon and upon arrival did not have my wallet for them to "swipe my credit card." They would not let us check in, even after agreeing that I had given them my CC # when I made the reservation and would have charged it if we had not shown up! My wife had to write a check for the room! The room was a "suite" with a small, but nice balcony overlooking 6th St. The room itself was barely bigger than the bed in it...Literally. The fancy marble shower flooded the bathroom floor because there was no drip sill to stop the water. I expected way more for over $400 a night. My biggest complaint was how we were treated by the staff, however.

My family and I always recommend to our out of town guests who like to stay in downtown for a full experience - they just have to atleast stay at the Driskill for 1 night. Experience the history of it, the food, staff & atmosphere. Always an experience for anyone from out of town.
Pros: Staff, Food, Location

Staying at the Driskill is a must if you are staying in Austin. We have travelled all over the US and The Driskill ranks among the most memorable hotels we have ever stayed at and the rates are very reasonable considering the quality of the stay. You won't regret it or...forget it!!
Pros: great location, affordable luxury, elegant & spotless
Cons: parking
