Seriously Strong Soulfood
by leapea82
This is the best soulfood - good home cooking place in town. There are some great places to eat on the east side but Arkies can not be beat. Make sure you get the Beef Tips.
- Pros: Your mom can't make food this good.
- Cons: be patient during lunch, line can be long - but moves fast
Great Food
by blove72
Arkies was a great find, we ran across this in the newspaper when they did a story on his restaurant. It's funny how you drive past a place often and never pay attention to it. Well myself and my co-workers finally went and i can say it was great, just as the previos patrons have stated the food is great and yes you pick the one side ya dont want. Service was attentive and food was pleantiful. Will definatly go back for more.
- Pros: Food, Service
- Cons: None
Better than Mom's!
by johnsonax
Some of the best, if not THE best home cooking in Austin. When you order, you don't tell 'em the three sides you want you tell the one you DON'T want: "I'll take the meatloaf, hold the cabbage and rolls".
- Pros: food, food, food!
- Cons: VERY crowded at lunch, but service is fast
Good Home Cooking
by stellartrane
Good little Diner. I had the catfish. It was pretty good for the price. It's crowded during lunch, and probably hasn't changed much since it's conception in 1948. Friendly staff will call you "Hun" and "Sweety". Good food at a Good price with nothing fancy. Try it out. I will be going back myself to try the turkey and dressing on Thursdays.
- Pros: Good Home Cooking, Cheap Prices, No Frills
- Cons: No Complaints

Small roadside diner near downtown has been a breakfast and lunch institution since the first half of the 20th century.
Eat Your Veggies
by austinaggie
Great little place for most all tastes: from the vegetable plate (carrots make the trip worth it alone) to Thursday's turkey & dressing....and just about everything fried inbetween. Vegetable sides and cornbread and/or rolls served with most meals. Very cozy place- felt like home.
- Pros: Vegetables, Warm welcome, Lunch specials
- Cons: Could be cleaner, No grilled chicken, No grilled fish
