Why does the worst vegetarian food in Austin get such great reviews?

by cancar

I can't believe Mr. Naturals is getting so many good reviews; it's got to be the worst vegetarian food around. Their pastries are dry, much of their food is under seasoned and lacks flavor; they seem to be scared of spice and heat. It's a lot more starch heavy than vegetable heavy - there's not much there that seems fresh. I can't really think of anything good to say about them. Tex-Mex could be made into delicious vegetarian food, but they don't pull it off.

  • Pros: they don't sell meat products
  • Cons: the food just doesn't taste very good

Soooo good!

Mr. Natural is the BEST in town! I go there very often because the food is super yummy and the atmosphere is very relaxed. All the food is good, but the gorditas are spectacular. Also, the strawberry bars from the bakery are my favorite treat.

Who would of known Mexican food could be vegetarian!

by mark_goodfield

This place is amazing! I cant believe that Mexican food can be healty! Chile Rellenos smothered in ranchero sauce, spicy albondigas (al-bond-egas) made from soy, Veggie Fajitas, and more! Their food isnt the only thing that has me coming back for more, their bakery is plentiful too. They have empanadas filled with sweet potato, pumpkin or pineapple. Oh and they recently got these new gluten free muffins that are to die for. The dark chocolate muffin is the winner on my list....but once in a while I go back to the vegan brownie.

Oh and if you havent tried their banana splits you are missing out on a vegan treat. I never knew being vegan/ vegetarian was going to taste so damn good.

Dont listen to anyone else that says Mr. Natural is not good. Those people dont have anything better to do than pick on others. The staff is friendly, the food is fresh, the flavor is unique and I am sure you would enjoy it. Oh and you must try a sample of the spinach pineapple drink...yup its the green drink.

Healthy? Fried foods are not health even if they are vegan.

by marylouwho

This was my first and my last time to go to Mr. Natural. I ordered an avocado sandwich. I simply wanted avocado, lettuce, and tomato on whole wheat bread. When they brought the sandwich to our table, I immediately noticed that the whole wheat bread was sliced very thick and it was not fresh. The avocado on the sandwich was almost nonexistent. I would estimate that the amount of avocado on my sandwich was less than 1/4 of a SMALL avocado. Instead of a leaf or two of green or red leaf lettuce, the lettuce was iceberg (healthy? NO nutritional value at all!) lettuce and it was chopped into pieces. Along with the chopped pieces of lettuce were chopped pieces of tomato rather than slices of tomato. There were also small pieces of red cabbage mixed in with the chopped lettuce and tomato. They evidently just grabbed a handful of already made "salad" and stuck it between two pieces of thick, dried out bread with a microscopic amount of avocado. The person I dined with enjoyed his meal. He had fried eggplant which is not a very "healthy" choice.

Popular Cesar Chavez restaurant offers fresh vegetarian Mexican food.

by Contributor

In Short
Tucked between used-tire lots and auto-body shops in east Austin, this little treasure of a restaurant is owned by a couple who specialize in border Mexican and Tex-Mex vegetarian food. Home-cooked flavor seeps out of inexpensive, authentic-tasting dishes such as zucchini poblano, wheat-roasted carne guisada and sunflower-tofu tamales--making this a popular spot for a hip college crowd and health-conscious parents. The empanadas and cookies for dessert are often vegan and wheat and dairy-free.

I love Mr. Natural

by phackman

Despite being familiar with the restaurant's amicable and awesome family-owned staff, I love the fact that Mr. Natural is strictly dedicated to serving the best possible Tex-Mex vegetarian foods for Austinites. Forget Veggie Heaven where the portions are small and ugly. Mr. Natural serves you up a big fat plate of good healthy food that sticks to your ribs. The veggie BBQ is also a must try. I love Mr. Natural and I also love how it loves us back.

  • Pros: plenty to choose from, health-minded, economical
  • Cons: needs more locations
