GREAT Ice Cream!

by Mark33308

We were in Austin 24 hours this week and went to the Lamar store twice! And Drew was also great in serving our ice cream. Very funny and customer service oriented.

Fun place-great icecream

by k24man

This place has a great personality and great treats! They have a wonderful selection of flavors and the staff was great for an austin icecream place. Our server actually flung the icecream ball into the air and caught it in the bowl. It was great. The building wasn't the cleanest in the world but the desserts and the staff made it well worth your while!

  • Pros: Great staff, even better food!
  • Cons: A bit of a dirty building-but it is worth it anyway!

Mexican vanilla rules

by josh

This is the first Amy's I went to. I love their Mexican vanilla and also their seasonal flavors, like eggnog and that kind of thing. The employees are always really happy and friendly, but they shouldn't beg so much for tips. It's a little off-putting. Great icecream and specialty drinks.

Bad service, ice cream pretty good

by truthis

The best thing about this place are the unique flavors. The worst thing is the service. The employees try too hard to be cool. They are rude. Not helpful. The employees at Amy's icecream act like they are doing you a favor by helping you. I have visited at least 3 times to make myself like the place or get used to the attitude these employees have, but why should I have to pay to put up with that???

I agree with the previous entry. Amy's needs to stop trying so hard to be cool and hire some real employees.

  • Pros: icecream
  • Cons: service, employees

it's delicious

by dorian_doppelganger

The employees are friendly, there are some teriffic flavors (key lime pie; lemon ice; ice cream sandwich), you can make your own flavors if you don't like the ones they have, there's usually good music, sometimes there are good movies, and Amy is kind of hot. I agree it's over-priced, but no more so than other local ice creameries across the nation, and no more so than Cold Stone, etc. Yes, some of the employees have tattoos and funky hair-- they're pretty indicative of college students (which most are) in those ways. And I've seen them clean the stores-- they're clean; the dirt or whatever the previous complaint was about is most likely the accumulation of years of wear (inevitably paints wears down, etc.). Anyway, if you ever get to know them, the employees are some of the nicest folks around.

  • Pros: ice cream and a fun soundtrack
  • Cons: waiting behind annoying fuddy duddies

An Austin Favorite

by macscruff

However, not the best environment, not the nicest employees, and certainly not the best ice cream. I understand Austin LOVES its local businesses. Amy's is in a word 'corporate' but still the locals feel its a special Austin thing. This makes no difference to me if the product isnt even worthy. I have to admit, some flavors are intersting, Shiner and Guinness are clever but not unique. Guinness Ice Cream is something Ive had many times in the Carribean and West Indies.

Other flavors have been so sickening sweet Ive thrown it out before being half way finished.

I am not impressed with the theatrics of the kids who scoop and squish. Ive had more bad attitude from employees while trying to be cute than Ive had actual good service.

Hint to Amy's - Stop trying so hard.

  • Pros: I have not gotten sick
  • Cons: Ice Cream, environment, employees

Overpriced

by cristinamh

This ice cream is pretty good, but definately not the best ice cream I've ever had. And it's too overpriced for average ice cream! However, everytime I've gone, the employees have been very nice. I guess most of the appeal comes from it being one of those traditional Austin establishments...

  • Pros: Good service
  • Cons: Overpriced ice cream

Another Tattoo Factory

by kd12l

The ice cream is ok, but this location is consistently dirty-a real mess.

If you need your tattoo viewing fix, check out the employees. While they are filling your order, it is more than odd to see so many young woman wiht their rainbow mutalated arms on display.

Clean up or go the way of the midway of the 70's.

  • Pros: They have ice cream
  • Cons: Not a Clean Operation

Texas heat can be beat with cool creations from this homegrown ice cream parlor.

by Contributor

In Short
Amy's Ice Cream has been a tradition since Amy Miller opened the first shop in 1984. With such homemade flavors as Mexican vanilla, sweet cream and, for the truly Texan, Shiner Bock, there's an ice cream concoction here for everyone. On warm evenings, a crowd of families and couples gather and the murmur of friendly chit-chat can be heard over the sound of paddles beating candy or cookie mix-ins into ice cream scoops.

Inside scoop from former employee

by jb36

Want to avoid lines at Amy's, try coming at opening hours or during meal hours (11:30am-12:30pm, 5:30-7:00). People say we take a long time to make the ice cream, but we have to interact with every single customer and some people like to sample every flavor, WE CAN'T HELP IT! Also, if you get extraordinary service please write the employees name down on a comment card, we get bonuses for good behavior. Beyond that, every store has it's own type of employees since the manager of that specific store does the hiring. If you don't like the vibe you get from one store try another. For example: the Guad store will have your hipster college kids, the Arbor will have your more mall friendly types, Congress has the musician kids. Anyway, we don't set the prices, we don't have strawberry icec ream (we can make it with sweet cream and strawberries, and we don't crush into tinies, and no it's not a good way to get out aggression, and we don't all play the drums.

PS- don't forget to tip if you have a large group or genuinely enjoyed your service, we get paid minimum wage and rely on tips.
