good place for coffee

by cachaka

the lamar location has changed over the years, but it is still a decent place to go and the coffee selection is pretty good.

  • Pros: coffee
  • Cons: sometimes bad service

So-so...another we're too hip to provide hot food and good service place

by shaft28

I always fell like the counter and wait staff are doing me a favor by taking my order here. Not that they won't stop working the cashier to make a 1/2 caff, 1 splenda latte for a customer and leave the line hanging out the door...seriosuly hire a full time barista on the weekends!

The food is good, but not great. In fact more often then not it hits the table luke warm (again service being more the problem here). As far as taste, I enjoy the food and coffee specialties (although all types of their sausage are just bad).

My wife likes the atmosphere, I don't. It's ok at best.

bleh!

by kcf78749

I really wanted to like this place. The ambience seems really cool, but the food is terrible and overpriced. My omelet was room temperature and tasteless, and I was afraid to ask them to heat it up...the staff wasn't too friendly. Try Cafe Java in north Austin instead. It's much better!

Migas Review by The Melbourne Method

by MigasMethod

The Migas themselves were good, and I will not deny that I enjoyed them. However, they did not knock me out of my seat to exclaim: ?Hot dog! These here are the best Migas in Austin!? Indeed, I did not say that, and I doubt I would say such a thing, but I certainly cleaned all of the Migas from the plate . The amount of Migas was also good (but there is never enough) as the Migas took up just less than half the plate while each of the sides took up just a little bit more than a quarter (I am not going to mess with fractions), and the two tortillas were placed on top of the potatoes. Another strength of the Austin Java Migas was that the proportion of veggies mixed in with the eggs and tortillas was properly proportioned so that each bite contained some onions, peppers, or jalapenos ? and the cup of salsa was enough to coat the Migas. Sadly the tortilla chips were not quite as plentiful as the veggies, they were certainly there, but they weren?t there in any kind of force. Lastly (though not in importance) the layer of cheddar melted over the top was good enough to give the top a thorough coating but the rest of the Migas were hardly contaminated with cheese (which is a bad thing).

Admittedly, I generally don?t like beans with my eggs but I enjoyed the black beans on the plate, and the cheese melted on them was a tasty touch, they were even kind of spicy. Migas are the important part, undoubtedly, yet I also assign a certain level of importance to breakfast potatoes. I already mentioned the layout of the plate and noted that the potatoes were suspiciously hidden underneath the tortillas. This seemed amusing until I actually ate the potatoes. They looked like they?d be delicious but sadly they were not: cold, hard, and rather bland the potatoes significantly diminished my overall enjoyment. Nevertheless the Migas were certainly alright and would suitably sate a craving.

Migas Score: 4 out of 7

Best Pancakes In Town

by mountainmanven

It's tough to review a place like this because everything that they serve is well above average. Some personal favorites include: chocolate-chip pancakes with strawberries, Vietnamese coffee, burgers, and the peanut soup. Ingredients are fresh, the staff members are cool, and the vibe is laid-back.

Fabulous french toast!

by sharasmile

I love this eclectic, little coffee house. The coffee is great, and they have a yummy breakfast. You MUST order the french toast on farmer's toast - Not only is it a huge portion, but it's THE best french toast I've ever had!!

A laid-back Lamar Boulevard joint that's known for its coffee, but also boasts local art, large entrees and house made desserts.

In Short
Students and Clarksville locals gather in small tables inside this wood-covered restaurant. Name appropriate, all Austin Java is home-roasted. Six air pots keep it fresh--three regular (from the Americas and Africa), one unflavored decaf and one flavored each in regular and decaf. Goodflow juices and wine also available, as is the local artwork on the walls. Creative sandwiches, such as smoked turkey with cranberry chutney, bring in a steady lunch crowd.

Turkey Burger to Die For

by franceebrown

I went in here with a coworker and was soo happy. The turkey burger was the greatest I had ever had. It was seasoned to perfection and the bread was so good. It was mouth watering and I loved every minute of it. I had a soup as well and it too was good, but the turkey burger just completely clouded my thoughts.

Yum yum!!

by laurarocs

I love this place, cant get enough of the "build your own breakfast tacos". Not only do they have great

breakfast food, they have great lunch and dinner menu as well. I highly recommend this place to anyone from out of town. Austin Java has great Austin style with an artistic atmosphere.

My fav location is the Barton Springs location.

  • Pros: Great food
  • Cons: Both locations are in the southern part of Austin - far drive for us NW, N-austin-ites

big fuss over not much

by ejean764

I've been here 3 times- once their espresso machine was broken, once they were out of espresso, and once they brought me the wrong food twice. When I do get what I order, I'm generally unimpressed. People seem to meet here a lot, and I guess the location is nice, but there are much better coffeeshops and restaurants in the same area.

  • Pros: location
  • Cons: value, price, service
