During peak hours this place can get very packed. The food is ok. Some dishes are strangely .. wrong. In particular, the fajita meat. Chicken is in large chunks and tends to be very dry. The salads are not that great.

The salsa is excellent. The chips are usually fresh and crisp. Their famed enchilada plates are good... if you really like cheese. They are swimming in it... which is fine by me. i love cheese.

The best breakfast taco in town: Pete's Tantalizing Tacos. The BEST.

Some of their unconventional dishes like the spinach mushroom enchilada are something to be desired... but not terrible.

The worst hamburgers. i dont know why i ordered a burger at a mexican restaurant but i did. Dont be like me.

Good customer service.

Maudie's Cafe is a great place to take the family - great food - fun atmosphere. I think they have other locations in Austin that I will try. This is a place to go back to.

Maudies Lake Austin is one of my all-time favorite Tex-Mex restaurants in Austin. They have consistantly good food (with a few misses here and there), and with a few exceptions, I have experienced generally good service. I get a lot of take-out orders from them, and the only thing I would suggest is that they improve on fulfilling take-out orders. Many times I have gotten home only to discover they left off the rice and beans that I ordered, or put in flour instead of corn tortillas, or whatever. Not enough to get upset over, but still, it's just one more little hassle. I forgave their constant mistakes when they were going through all the construction and remodeling - now it's time to step up to the plate a bit more. But all in all, a good Tex-Mex place!

  • Pros:  Relaxed atmosphere, reasonably priced.
  • Cons: Take-out orders can be wrong on a regular basis - check it before you leave.

I went there with my friends and sister few nights ago, we were seated promptly and the atmosphere was very fun, although I was COMPLETELY not impressed with the service. We had at least FOUR different servers and just getting another bowl of chips took forever. I've been in the service industry for awhile and understand if it's busy or they're shorthanded, but COME ON there wasn't one "sorry" for the slow service. Granted everyone's food was yummy except the salad I got was pretty weak for for their "special" salad so. Go on and try it out maybe it was just that day but beware the servers :)...

Not sure why this place is so "cool" - been around a long time. Big with the UT crowd. There are much better places to eat mexican. Not bad - but honestly nothing special. Staff is fine - kind of the typical Austin weird, too cool for school crowd.

I go almost as a regular now for lunch. I love this place! One of if not the best Tex-Mex in town and the other locales serve the same great food.

  • Pros: Great food and value, and service
  • Cons: None, no really, not kidding, great place.

We visited the W. 7th street location for late brunch. Although the service was very friendly and more than accomodating, we couldn't help but be a little disppointed. We have found many of these reviews to be on the money; however this time we have to disageee. The food was on the bland side and needed to be kicked up a notch. The food also took along time even though the place wasn't even cloise to being 1/2 full (the staff was still attentive though).

Austins diner had better breakfast taco's and Chuy's had a better lunch menu. We will most likely return to give it a 2nd shot and try other items due to the location & service, but we won't be in a hurry to do so.

  • Pros: Low prices, great service, clean inside and out
  • Cons: Bland food, items took long to prepare

I've tried most of the Maudies locations and consistently found their food and service to be outstanding. As someone with Celiac Disease who has to avoid wheat/gluten, I have found their servers and managers eager to help me find which menu items avoid these ingredients.

I didn't think it was possible for my opinion of Maudie's to improve any more. But last week they were a sponsor of the 2006 Moonlight Margarita run benefiting the town lake trail foundation. Maudies catered the party afterwards and were able to provide a meal of gluten free fajitas with corn tortillas despite having, oh, about several hundred other guests to feed all at once. I had sent them an email in advance and received instructions of who to contact once I arrived at their buffet line. It worked out amazingly well.

Kudos and sincere thanks to Maudies!

  • Pros: Attentive management and service. Finding gluten free dishes is easy.

Went to breakfast on a Saturday morning at this location (which was suprisingly not too crowded) after hearing how wonderful it was. We entered the door and were offered inside or outside seating -- we chose outside and were told to pick a table and someone would be right with us. After waiting 10 minutes, we had to go back in and remind them that we were there and still hadn't been helped. Someone then came and hastily took our order. When the food arrived, they brought us a double order of one of the items we ordered, only part of another order and failed to bring us water even after we asked for it twice (it was summer, come on people!). The waitress finally topped off our coffee as we finished our meal, which by that point we had undoubtedly decided not to return. If you're going to have patio dining, assign a wait person to that section! The food and prices were good -- pity the service will keep us from coming again.

  • Pros: great food and prices
  • Cons: horrible service

In Short
Decidedly strip mall, but with the added bonus of a shaded, fan-dominated patio. The parking lot usually contains both sleek BMWs and rattling pickups. Expect at least a 30-minute wait on most nights--it's worth it. The food's classic Tex-Mex: smooth-as-can-be queso and never-ending baskets of chips. Favorites include Ruth-Ann enchiladas, cheese enchiladas topped with carne guisada; and vegetarian fajitas with corn tortillas and sour cream.
