Judgemental Purse Checkers
by Vanessa222
I usually love this store. But I found the last time I went in, they lady at the desk when you first walk into the store was very judgemental about checking my purse. After uncomfortably handing over my purse, I wonder why she's not checking my friends purse who's was the same size as mine. Then I look around at books and cards, and notice 3 people around me with bags bigger than mine on! So my advice is dress nicely... keep your bag, wear cut off jeans and a t-shirt be prepared to hand over the bag. When I expressed concern, she blamed it on different employee standards when following the bag size rule, and said i could lock my purse in the locker. I dont know if I will go back there ever because of this.
"The Largest Bookstore in Texas" also has a full events calendar and a knowledgeable staff for every subject.

In Short
A literary mover and shaker, BookPeople has books and magazines for all, and sells gifts and jewelry. It also serves as a popular stop-off for author tours. Austin's New Age bent makes those authors a major draw, but they also bring in major names like Gregory Maguire, Joyce Carol Oates, and Neil Gaiman. Many of their sections also have a decorative theme, such as the Buddhism department, which also holds bells, bowls and meditation pillows.
A center of community in every way

BookPeople is truly the best bookstore in Texas (and maybe the world). They have a fabulous inventory of Austin and Texas authors as well as beautiful jewelry, stationary and gifts of all kinds. Don't miss the funky toy section on the second floor. They have a coffeehouse in store, author visits, book groups and much more. BookPeople is truly a community bound by books.
