Texas home-style grill on East Oltorf serves up the grub the cowboys are used to.
"Just Be Nice!

This place rocks and has for years. The owner Danny Young is the self proclaimed Mayor of south Austin and welcomes every person like an old friend. If you really are an old friend there are hugs exchanged too! The food is wonderful and the service is personal and prompt. For ten years their awesome waitress LaDonna never asked for my order during my weekly visit as she always remembered exactly what I wanted. I am a "Dixie Red Hot" Extra hot with waffle fries and Jalapeno Sam's Ketchup" and a 'suicide' iced tea. This is old South Austin at its finest hour. May the Texicalli live long, for it is very well loved among Austinites and 'Wannabe Texans". God bless Danny & Lou and may God bless Texas!
With love, Betina

- Pros: great food, great people
- Cons: limited parking
Nirvana for Dr Pepper lovers.

If you're a Dr Pepper fan, get to Texicalli. Danny Young makes regular pilgrimages to Dublin to get real Dr Pepper -- made the old way with Imperial pure cane sugar. Try the DP milk shake; it's greater than the sum of its parts. A balanced meal is important, so have that shake with an old-fashioned cheeseburger or chicken fried steak. On your next visit, try the waffle fries with queso or anything from the wide-ranging and imaginative menu -- it's all good. Going to Texicalli is not just a trip to Travis Heights -- it's a trip to Old South Austin.
- Pros: Host with the most, Real Dr Pepper, Jukebox plays 45s
- Cons: Closes at 4:00
Great food, company, and ambience.

After 3 years in Travis Heights I just happened on this little gem. The sandwiches, salads and sides are unique, delecious and cheap. Danny, the owner, greets you like an old friend and the decor defies easy description. But you never get tired of looking at all the artifacts of South Austin and Danny's life as a memeber of the Austin music scene. Drop in alone or with a crowd but don't miss the first Wednesday of every month which is tiara day. Wear one yourself or just enjoy the people who do incluidng the staff.
