We stopped at Sandy's to cure a milkshake craving and my fiance got a chocolate malt and I got a vanilla. The two flavors were nearly indistinguishable from one another. And they gave us thin straws that were impossible to s*ck the milkshake through. And the lady who took our money and gave us the milkshakes had a scowl on, not very friendly at all. Maybe on any other day with any other food item they're great but... for just a milkshake... not so great.

  • Pros: conveniently located
  • Cons: cheap straws for milkshakes

I've been going to Sandy's every Friday with my friends for lunch since August. It is in a sense, our weekly Hajj.

I usually get a double burger, fries, and water for $6.15, but they did something so it comes out to $6.47 now, and that bothers me because I always pay in exact change. Oh well, such is life.

I don't care how cheap or greasy the burgers are. They. Taste. Good. If you're in the mood for a fatty burger, these puppies can satisfy that craving for fat your brain is having, and it will feel awesome. Really, they're just straight up tasty burgers. More than once have I quoted Samuel L. Jackson from Pulp Fiction in that, "This IS a tasty burger!"

I also like how the fry to burger ratio is in perfect sync. Some places like Huts give you a truckload of fries with a tiny burger, or vice versa. Not at Sandy's. You get one size of fry which is exactly enough to keep you satisfied.

I don't usually get sodas just because I don't like high fructose corn syrup, but you can get an enormous soda for just 2 bucks and add cherry or vanilla flavor shots at no extra charge.

I can't attest much to the ice cream, malts, or shakes. I had a malt once and it tasted fine to me. Nothing special, but it was still tasty and cheap.

Now yes, it is true that the lady is fairly grumpy. Since I'm a regular I think she may have warmed up to me a little bit, but it really wouldn't hurt her to be friendlier, especially since the girl who actually hands you the food is extremely pleasant.

It's not Central Market or Whole Foods. You're not going to get a wholesome meal at Sandy's. You're going to get a tasty burger at a reasonable price and enjoy it.

  • Pros: Burgers
  • Cons: So the lady's a bit grumpy, and they nickel and dime you.

Well, I didn't go there to be entertained by the ol'lady behind the counter but she did not give me any trouble . I got the double cheese combo and ordered the burger all the way. It was an excellent example of the classic greasy cheese burger. Fries were subpar and the tea I got was good and sweet tea. Once I placed my order I had it in about 3 to 5 minutes. I would go back.

  • Pros: Very good burger
  • Cons: Fries were not very good and don't go on a very hot day. You eat outside

I know everyone is complaining about the service, but the food makes it worth it! The hamburgers are always hot and juicy and the milk shakes are to die for! The parking and drive-thru are a little crazy....but its to be expected since Sandy's is located in such a small area. They have picnic tables in the back, so you can sit and enjoy your meal without feeling rushed.

  • Pros: Great combo deals, milk shakes, fries and burgers
  • Cons: parking

The burgers are ok. They aren't great. They aren't on my top 10 in Austin but they are knocking on the door. The ice cream is good but when was the last time you had bad ice cream. The ridiculousness was on the menu. They have specials. One is a cheeseburger, fries and a drink. I ordered that special with no cheese and was told no, they can't do that. HUH? I asked how much it was for a hamburger, fries and a drink and was told it was $1.00 more than the special. I said, ok give me the special with the cheese on the side. Nope. So I ask, you're going to charge me a $1.00 more to not have cheese. Yep. I felt like Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces. Then she asked if I wanted ice cream. I told the her that I might as well since I'll never be back. Just because you're an "Austin Institution" (as if that moniker isn't thrown around this town enough already) doesn't mean you can get away with idiotic policies and rude inflexible people. I you want a great burger and ice cream, go to Nau's Enfield Drugstore. You won't regret it.

I was born in Austin and have been visiting Sandys all of my life. The Hamburgers are good, the french fries are so so, and the ice cream is good. It is the location and atmosphere that are nice. THE WAIT STAFF IS TERRIBLE !!!!!!! My family likes to ride bikes on the Town lake trails and then go to Sandys to eat. We stopped by recently while riding bikes and got the kids ice cream cones. I asked the grumpy old lady at the window if I she would fill my son's water bottle with water..... she looked at me like I was crazy and told me that she could not and that it was a city ordinance, I would have to BUY A GLASS of water. I walked over to the Wataburger next door and they were VERY freindly and nice and told me that it was fine to fill my water bottle with ICE water, I didn't even buy ANYTHING. Needless to say, I will not be visiting Sandys EVER again, SERVICE DOES MATTER !!!!!!!

  • Pros: Good location
  • Cons: TERRIBLE STAFF

If you are lucky enough to have the pleasure to dine at Sandy's or pick the food up to go you are incredibly lucky. This is a dying breed in Austin, not only is the food phenomenal, yes... hamburgers, fries and hot dog for dessert is phenomenal, lets not forget how much the land it sits on is worth (a lot o cash). It won't be around forever, at some point their price will be met and they will sell, a 40 story condo complex will go up.

Get there, enjoy! Hamburger, hot dog for dessert and a milk shake to wash it down with, that's Austin. FYI The seating is outside because 9 months out of the year that is where we want to be, and the parking is a situation you will run into with anything worthwhile i Austin. If you live or visit here... you just have to deal with it, we aren't Houston or Dallas. We have our own thing going on, Sandy's is a great example!

Sandys has great Food, the price is right and the milkshakes are great ( besides the THIN Straws).Customer service is horrible, the lady that takes the orders is on the rag all the time. They are so greety with the ketchup, and what i dont understand is why you can not have seperate orders. They are stuck in the dark ages and do not accept credit cards. If you get rid of those 4 things I would have given it a 5 star, I just think food taste better if you get it from great people.

In Short
Sandy's neon custard cone with the birdie on top has been a fixture along Barton Springs for several decades. There's always a line in the drive-through and folks settle at picnic tables scattered around the parking lot. Classic burgers, fries and famous frozen custard are the draw. A cheeseburger offers various combinations of double meat, double cheese, double bun.
