Disappoints every time...

This place should be avoided if at all possible. Each time we've visited here the services has been terrible, the food was cold...subpar, and the staff is rude and dismissive. They have a back patio that has two sewage manhole covers and it smells of human waste and dumpster. It takes forever to get your food and when it does come it's either cold, room temp or burnt. There are several other BBQ resturants in Austin much more worth your while. Last time they charged us twice, both of which were NOT even the original bill amount. The restuarant itself needs to be cleaned, the bathrooms are nasty and the menus are greasy. We've given them more that several chances thinking it was just a one time fluke...they have proven us wrong several times over. On top of all this their jukebox is broken. I CAN'T EXPRESS HOW MUCH I URGE YOU TO STEER CLEAR OF THIS PLACE. PLEASE DON'T GO THERE...REALLY.
- Pros: easy to find.
- Cons: everything else.
Horrible food and service

If there was an option for NO stars, this place would get it. We were there early on a non-busy Saturday night. The food and service were horrible. Burnt cheeseburger and buns were totally black. Spent almost 10 minutes trying to get someone?s attention ? standing and waving does not work, - was totally ignored by 2 waiters and a food delivery person. Finally gave up, left the nasty burnt bread on the table where you could not miss it if you were walking by, I had to physically stop the waiter and show it to him when he breezed by the table almost 15 minutes later. Husband?s BBQ was cold and nasty. Green beans, cold and nasty. The final crappy thing was a pen that didn?t work when we went to check out. We did manage to put a big fat 0 in the tip, they are now trying to charge us a $7 tip on top of what they charged us for horrible food and service. I used to wait tables and I have NEVER left a $0 tip in Austin in the 12 years I've lived here - however, our waiter and the staff deserved less than that! Eat ANYWHERE else in Austin. There are much better places.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Food, Service

This place has great food. The prices are right and the menu big. There are always specials at great prices. You got to try the hamburgers! Awesome.

I eat at this restaurant at least 3 time a week. The service is excellent, the food consistant, and they are dog friendly. I always sit out back on the patio and have a great time. The last time I was in my waitress was at another table (who had a dog) delivering the food. When she dropped it off, the dog then lunged and tried to bite her. She reacted as anyone would, telling the dog no and backing off. The dog owners not only did not say as much as sorry, but were offended when she asked them to remove the dog and informed them that it was not allowed back. I also would like to add that there was a table next to them that had several kids with them. I would just like to say that if you are that kind of dog owner, you have no business owning a dog. I hope that those dog owners read this and understand that they may ruin the privilege of being able to bring your dog to eat with you. I am very impressed with the waitress for keeping her cool in such a crappy situation.
Extensive menu, live music and an intimate back patio.

In Short
There's an earthy, side-of-the-road quality to the Green Mesquite, like a joint you'd find on a dusty highway. Booths, a jukebox and a checkerboard floor (all green, of course) create a casual vibe. There's live music on the patio, making the picnic benches back there the best seats. The restaurant serves up brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey, chicken and ham. You can order by the pound or get two- and three-meat combo plates with sides.
Terrible Service!

The service at this broke-down restaurant was terrible! I've never had to deal with such bad service before! I've only been to Green Mesquite once and mark my word I will NEVER go back! It took nearly 30 minutes to get our drinks! And no they weren't alcohol drinks but rather 3 orders of iced tea! Then the waitress decided to never come back to take our food order! Instead she dropped by every other table around us and completely ignored our presence! But being dumb we waited it out. But the last straw came when our waitress brought the drinks to the table behind us and took their order before ours when they had gotten there nearly 20 minutes after us! We decided to leave money for our teas and leave! I made it a point to talk to a manager nicely before leaving only to be told that it was my fault for not flagging down the waitress and that I shouldn't come eat during March because they get extremely busy. Imagine how shocked I was! Hey if they're too busy to serve customers in March they should put a sign up in the front and let us know before hand. Besides, thats the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! Don't waste your money, time or appetite at this place.
- Pros: Patio is dog friendly
- Cons: Bad service, terrible management, dirty
simply not a good place

This place has very little going for it. To its credit, the staff was relaltively friendly, and the atmosphere, i suppose - is about what you would expect for a BBQ place.
When you first peruse the menu you will find that they think they can cook everything: jambalaya, beef bbq, pork bbq, various sandwiches. even mexican food. however, i doubt they can cook any of it good. fried okra: was clearly frozen kind, green beans: clearly from a can, pork bbq: was cheap roast pork as from a grocery store, brisket: actually ok, but not great... you get the idea.
- Pros: inexpensive
- Cons: bad food, bland
Great ambiance/good bbq

This place is great, not so much for the food, but for the great beer garden out back. On weekends they always have a funky Austin band playing. The chicken is pretty good and the chopped beef sammich is above standard. Fried okra is pretty tasty.
This place burned down a few years ago and took some time to get up to codes. This is a very old building that used to be a roadside (that's a dirt road!) grocery.
Good place to see how Austin used to be before all the dotcommers invaded and turned Austin into another Generica.
- Pros: great back yard, live music, cheap beer
