Good food? Yes. But also very overpriced & service could improve
by ohyeahlach at Citysearch
Came here on Friday for lunch... no lunch "specials" to be found. $13 lunch? Plus add'l amount for 2 tablespoons of Guac? And get this.... Add'l charge for ... CHEESE. You read correctly. CHEESE. And the charge wasn't for extra cheese, it was for ANY cheese. So I ordered a taco plate and had to pay to have cheese on them at all. When the cheese came it was a minimal amount. Absolutely ridiculous. Lunch for 2 was over $35 with sodas plus tip. Way overpriced. Service left a lot to be desired. Mentioned we hadn't been there before and she answered, "Then I will give you extra time". Ok. When she returned we mentioned 2 things that looked interesting and asked what she would go with. She answered "either one". Ok. Lot's of help there... hmmm. Perhaps she was new.
Oh yeah and menu's had dried food and dried salsa splatters all over them... yuck. attempted to use the restroom and it was closed for repairs. HU? Are you kidding? You can't do the repairs while closed? (they opened at 11:00).
I have to be fair and give the Positives: Have to say the food was tasty. Like the atmosphere. Like the salsa bar. .. still can't get over charging add'l for cheese! We totally get the extra charge for Guac/sour cream, but cheese is pushing it people (and the charge was per taco, I believe $1.20 each) Next time I may be a smart $## and bring my own.
- Pros: Food over all was enjoyable
- Cons: Parking, Even an add'l charge for CHEESE!
Migas Review by The Melbourne Method
by MigasMethod at Citysearch
When the Migas arrived on the table I was instantly impressed and pleased by the sight before me, for (as you can see in the above picture) Guero?s seems to understand that if Migas are ordered than Migas should be the main occupant of the plate. While it is true that some vacant spaces remained on the plate they were small and the Migas occupied more territory than the beans did, so I was pleased right away. Furthermore the tortillas were not used to hide vacant space on the plate, as they were in a separate tortilla dish. Enough care had been taken in arranging the plate that the beans had not been able to seep under the Migas and make the eggs taste like refried beans, there was even a little garnish to add flair (a bit much and a bit silly). In addition the Migas had many veggies that were clearly visible and the layer of cheese atop the Migas could only be described as thoroughly melted. Guero?s outfits its tables with a variety of excellent salsas and I spread the salsa verde over the Migas before biting in (I recommend the salsa verde for the Migas). The Migas were good and I was instantly pleased to note that in my bite I could clearly taste: eggs, cheese, salsa, and veggies. It was good, but as Liz put it ?it kind of tastes like an omelet,? a good omelet, but still an omelet. Why? Because the tortilla chips, which were visibly present simply did not stand out, they were there, they were definitely there, I could see them but I couldn?t really taste them, and the jagged tortilla bits that generally stick out of the Migas were nowhere to be seen (the Migas were actually rather flat). The dish I ordered at Guero?s was good, it really was, filling, and quite delicious. However, I pause to really call what I received Migas. What I received was great, it really was, but Liz?s initial reaction was right on the mark: it was really more of an omelet.

trendy, so-so Mexican food joint on Soco
by pitcdbf10 at Citysearch
ive been here many times, mainly due to the fact that others want to go, and its a trend place to hang out. Bar is always crowded. Overall most of the food is between blase to bad, but some of the dishes are good. I suggest the chile relleno. Margaritas are horrid - go else where. Breakfast is decent - and usually much less crowded. You can sit on the patio b/c it will still be cool then. Staff is usuall disorganized and a bit dis-gruntled. I have seen them actually fighting in the hallway hear the kitchen. Whoever manages the floor on weekends should probably be let go. This place has, and will probably continue to be popular for a few more years. Go to it when you have the time, but I would not make it a regular place. There are hundreds, no thousands, of places to eat Mexican in Austin.
- Pros: scene
- Cons: food, drinks
Horrible, Bad Food, Worse Service
by austin_hippie at Citysearch
I always forget how bad it is. But then I go again; like last Monday night. And after the waiter literally threw our food at us, it all came rushing back. I hate this place! How could I forget? I had family in town and thought Guero?s would be a great Austin-ie place to take them. I was embarrassed that I took them there. Actually embarrassed. I had to apologize for the food and service. There are way too many great places in Austin to waste your time and money here. I won?t anymore.
- Pros: Nothing
- Cons: Everything

This place had pretty good food though I have had better. The line was way too long and the food was overpriced. You can get better food for a lot cheaper else where.
- Pros: ambience
- Cons: overpriced, long lines
Don't go for the margaritas
by clearmedina at Citysearch
This place slaps a margarita on the face. They call their lemon and tequila a margarita. Then they serve it to you in a 12 oz glass. And to top it off about 3/4 of it is ice. As for the food. It was aggravating to order tacos and know that they added 1 dollar for everything you wanted in it. The guacamole as $1 per taco and it was only one spoonful. What a rip-off!! Everything was okay but I'll never go there.
Not traditional Mexican food.
by sarah_beara23 at Citysearch
Im mexican and this isnt traditional mexican food. The only great thing about the food was the Carna Guisada. All the plates were about different Hot sauces on every plate there was. (not a fan of hot sauces mixed in my food) Way too expensive for the food, too long of a wait. I dont know though alot of "out of towners" like it, but what do they know about Mexican food!
- Pros: Carna Guisada
- Cons: Too Pricey, Nasty Hot sauces, Bad parking
Extremely rude servers
by enpe at Citysearch
I've lived in the south austin neighborhood for a while and always try to bring visitors from out of town to Guero's. The last couple of times, I have had an extremely rude server who barely waits on our table. This is ridiculous behavior for the prices as well as time you have to wait to be seated as well as to get your food. The most recent visit, our server had the audacity to write out the amount of her tip for 18 and 20 percent. She did not deserve either....I will no longer be visiting Gueros as there are plenty of other great mexican restaurants that are friendly and worth the value. I understand it's a busy restaurant but there is no reason to act rude.
- Cons: slow service, rude servers
Way to pricey
by chase_winburn at Citysearch
How can you charge $1.50 for chips? Who does that? The food is good, but for a place that is low key and not as swanky sure does have high prices.
- Pros: Food
Horrible waiters-bad attitude
by socoslapper at Citysearch
Talk about attitude problems! The wait-staff at Guero's is generally surly, unfriendly and resentful...you know what, guys? You can quit anytime you want to,this ain't the army. I won't be back...in a town where most waitstaff are pathologically pleasant,Guero's is a rude awakening and shows just how great the others are. Get over yourselves!
- Cons: , rude barstaff, rude hostess
