The Horseshoe Lounge and the surrounding businesses has been bought and will be razed to the ground very soon. The Zilker Neighborhood Assn. is trying to save it.

My dad always told me the Horseshoe was one of the diviest, most dangerous bars in Austin. I laugh when I think about it now, how I had imagined bikers breaking bottles over each other's heads and knifing people in the parking lot. Every time I walk into the Horseshoe, I see a friend or two (or three), the bartenders know what I'm drinking, and I have the distinct satisfaction of knowing this is My Bar. Places like the Horseshoe Lounge are scarce in this day and age and I am so thankful it hasn't been corrupted like everything else "old" Austin.
Pros: friendly, cheap, original, best darn shuffleboard table in this town

I really like this place, the beers are cheap and you can BYOB under a pint. The bar serves set-ups since they don't sell liquor, and a cheap bottle of whiskey is the solution to many of lifes little problems. Be warned, the shuffle board tourneys can pack this place, but you will always find room to watch. They still allow you to smoke inside provided its not directly sitting at the bar. Cheers Horshoe! Two bottles up!
Pros: Cheap beer- BYOB- Smoking inside
Cons: The drunk toothless old guys that talk like they are from the depths of hell.

I walked into the Horseshoe on November 19, 2005... I feel like I haven't left yet. Every patron is family, and most of them are neighbors of the bar. It's a great place to run into local musicians that are either finishing a gig or taking a night off. The service is great, day or night... And who can beat $2.00 beer from noon to seven? Warning: Cash Only bar, but there's an ATM in the corner the staff is more than eager to point out. Watch out for the flying bottle caps on a busy night though!
Pros: Great People, Fun Times, Dive Bar!

Yes, this is a major dive. There are few bikers. (so what's the matter with bikers. You got the money for a 20k toy?) 1 pool table and yes it's 50 cents but it's a 50 cent table. Beer beer and beer, NO booze, too bad. Is there anywhere other than G&S where anyone over 30 can get a drink and smoke a cigarette on South Lamar?
Pros: Cheap!, Real cheap, You can smoke
Cons: , No Booze, Chicks? Rating 5

When I first moved into 78704 2 1/2 yrs ago, I would drive by TH Horseshoe Lounge and think who would want to go there. Everything I had heard about the bar was that it was a rough place full of biker gangs and geriatrics. This could only be further from the truth. The horseshoe is a friendly laidback environment with an assortment of people from their twenties to their eighties. One can play pool or my favorite shuffle board and get some free tips from the famous Happy Jack, a regular there for the past thirty years and one of the nicest guys Ive ever met. If youre not up to gaming just pull up a stool and have a cold one while listening to Willie on the jukebox. The Shoe is by far the best bar in Austin, TX.
Pros: Long Happy hour, Affordable drinks, Not incredibly loud
Cons: None

This dive bar has little frills, but still packs a good punch. Cheap beers, one pool table and a great shuffle board. The crowd varies, from the regulars to the young. I'd suggest this place if you are looking for somewhere to relax and have a few beers after work.

Looking at this bar from the outside might make you consider entering at your own risk. But once you are inside you will find that this Austin landmark has one of the best jukeboxes in town and some of the coldest beer. Great pre-outing location for a quick game of pool and some great music.
