We usually stay next door at the Austin Motel, a much more accurate reflection of the "true Austin." However, if the Austin Motel is full and you've got some extra cash, try the Hotel San Jose. It does try too hard to be hip, but it also does a lot of things well: the rooms are spare yet comfy, the courtyard is both beautiful and fun (due to the bar and fire pit), and the coffee shop next door brings in local bands for special events, which is fun. The S. Congress location is tops (right across the street from the Continental Club and down the street from Guero's. It's a young crowd, though: I felt right at home, but my (50ish) mother-in-law felt a little out of place.
