Solid Southern Comfort Eatting Experience
by the zubikhouse
Hoover's is a southern comfort experience hard to find in Austin these days. Perhaps a little heavy on the heat (spice), but that's part of the tradition. Collard greens made like my granny made, jalepeno spinach casserole that can both inspire and catch you on fire and some good cajun cuisine that needs to keep on growin in Austin. I was however, a little dissapointed with the boudin special. A little too dry guys. Now, I'm gonna defend these Hoover's a little and perhaps educate some previous comments made concerning a split charge. This is real estate and people gotta pays the bills and make a living. Your tip and those extra charges are there to make sure everyone is taken care of and all the bills are paid. Sitting down for two hours in a restaurant and ordering only a cup of coffee (strictly hypethetical) means people are loosing money. Hoover's is doing what every restaurant on the planet is trying to do...survive. Next time just share something. Don't ask them to split it. The more work work the restaurant and it's employees have to do for you means extra costs. It's cheaper if you do it yourself.
- Pros: good southern american food
- Cons: don't get there too late for lunch food quality starts to lack
WONDERFUL!!! (Come hungry!)
by jcorgidog
Wife and I ate at Hoovers on Saturday. Not too crowded even at 12:00. Very informal. I had the smothered pork chops, which were great. Fork tender and delicious. Wife had the meatloaf. Another winner! The sides we ordered, potato salad and macaroni & cheese, were very good. I especially liked the sweet potato buscuits. A wonderful sweet taste along with the nicest soft texture made these the best I've ever eaten! I could have loaded down on these alone and been happy!
- Pros: comfort food at its best
- Cons: none
Great southern cooking, solid wait staff
by ohyeahlach
We visited the NW Hoovers on 183 for lunch. While initially the prices seemed high, we quickly chnaged our minds once we saw the portions. Expect to bring a doggy bag home unless you are absolutely starving.
Our waiter was more than attentive and had a fun demeanor. We will definitely return!
- Pros: Large portions, cobbler looked great, tasty jalopeno spinach!
- Cons: Kind of drab inside but the staff perks it up
Good ol' Southern Cooking
by pinoyvlf
Well to be honest, I haven't eaten a whole lot of southern cooking, but I definitely thought this restaurant was first tier when it comes to taste. When people say everything is bigger in Texas, then Hoovers is a place you come to experience that. The wait can be long (I sometimes go during lunch on a workday) so I recommend getting there a little before 12 to get seated promptly. The staff is friendly and the food is great. The chicken fried stake was slightly above par and for some reason I just like the meatloaf. The corn bread you get in the beginning is some of the best I have ever had. I recommend the mac and cheese and the jalapeno creamedh spinach. The portions are a good value so prepared to be stuffed (or be coming home with a doggie bag). I think Hoovers is one of the best southern style cooking restaurants in central Austin.
- Pros: Food
- Cons: Charge for splitting their huge portions and the decent wait.

Simply Outstanding Home Cooking
by exquisitecuisine
We have been going to Hoover's for years and I can simply say it hits the spot every time. One great indicator of a successful restaurant is how long the staff sticks around. Well, they have numerous people that have worked there for years! The portions are huge, the food is flavorful and the new and improved atmosphere is very comfortable! And you may even run into the 2005 College Football Champion coach while you are there. If it is good enough for Mack Brown it's good enough for us!
- Pros: Service, Quality Food
Highly Overrated
by witchiepoo
They serve giant portions of food. The food's okay, yeah, but once they sell it to you, shouldn't you be able to do what you want with it? Instead, you have to pay three dollars if you want to split a plate of something. That really amounts to a cover charge, so why don't they just call it that? We don't mind paying to go out and get appetizers, entrees, and drinks, with small enough portions that we don't get overstuffed. But we're adults, and don't like being told we can't share food. And no, I don't want a stupid doggie bag of cold leftovers that I have to re-heat.
Don't bother. There are lots of other places with food just as good or better, that aren't trying to force you to overeat or waste food. We won't be back.
- Cons: loud, overrated, average food
Homestyle cookin' made with love and a little mojo guarantees a simply delicious meal.

In Short
The restaurant features a simple design that's warm and welcoming. Diners can sit at light pine booths with bright red seats or at small tables covered with butcher paper. A large storefront window lets in lots of light and a bar in the corner can satisfy your thirst while you wait for a table. Chef/owner Hoover Alexander offers daily specials. All entrees come with two sides, of which there is ample selection.
Good Home Cooking and Good prices!!
by nolive81
They had chicken and dumplings!!! THAT is HOME COOKING!!! It was the special, and I might suggest asking for less pepper if you can, but it was awesome. The fried okra was great as well. I had the fried catfish and I wish it would have been filets, but it was still good as the strips. It feels and looks nice there too. We will be going back for SURE! Probably soon. We got lemonaide, a beer, an appetizer, two entrees, and two desserts for under $40!!!! GREAT DEAL!!!
