Great food, but braille menus were terrible.

by BrailleKing

Pancakes were still the best, but the problem: the braille menu for the visually impaired was the worst I've ever come across. Imagine reading about a Caesar salad and not being able to find out what grilled toppings could be added because the word grilled was at the bottom of one page and the word shrimp was somewhere on the next page. Worse yet, many descriptions of the items were split between pages, formatting which would never be on a print menu. And aside from the fact that the table of contents was not accurate and that all the section names like Beverages, Desserts etc. were not centered, (in braille they looked like part of the rest of the menu), some of the lines began so close to the edge of the page that the dots were unreadable. And most important, no braille menus were available for the Bar - what a major disappointment! Both myself an my wife, have read the very high quality braille menus that Kerbey Lane had purchased from a Austin-based, home-grown, company and were looking forward to the same great experience. The ADA mandates that braille menus etc. are supposed to be of the same quality and readability as printed menus. The braille menus Kerbey Lane Cafe had in the past met these standards admirably, and included extras like the Seasonal Menu, the Catering Menu and most importantly, the Bar Menu. However, after spending over 30 minutes trying to navigate through a braille menu provided by the Braille Corner, an out-of-state company, known for its poor quality, miss-spellings and inaccurate formatting, we gave up. Out of frustration, we just asked our very nice waitress to read the specials to us. The food was great, 5 stars, but the ordering experience was zero stars. We cannot recommend Kerbey Lane to the many visually impaired patrons in Austin Texas unless they provide higher quality braille menus.

  • Pros: Great pancakes, (though the omelet was small), great service
  • Cons: Unusable braille menus, Key Lime Pie smaller than usual

Hit-or-miss

by youarewhatyoueat

I'd been to this location once before for lunch, where I'd had the Kerbey Queso and a cob sandwich, both of which where very tasty. So, my husband and I wanted breakfast last week and I'd seen on their website they'd been voted Best Breakfast in Austin, so I suggested we try it out.

I had the french toast with a side of migas. We both really liked the migas, which I'd ordered with queso. My french toast was disappointing. It didn't seem like it was made in house, more like it was out of a freezer box. It didn't even come with butter, just a gross fake tasting margarine. And the syrup was even more gross and fake tasting.

My husband ordered biscuits and gravy. The biscuits, too, seemed of the freezer variety. The gravy was cold and tasteless. The only partially saving grace were the sausage patties, but even those weren't fantastic.

I really want to like this place, because it supports local farms. But we left just perplexed at how this could possibly be the best breakfast in Austin!

  • Pros: Atmosphere, locally raised food
  • Cons: Horrible biscuits and gravy

Quaint Old Austin

by dave_perryman

My wife and I eat here every time that we come back to Austin. We don't do the other locations because this is the original and the other outposts (except South Congress?) don't seem to be the same. I haven't been here at 2:00 AM in years, but the food is always fresh and often creative in the mornings. You have to be able to appreciate the ambiance, or the lack of personal space and the parking can be a distraction.

  • Pros: food, food, and the food
  • Cons: parking (but get over it)

Try the Cowboy Queso & Scream YEEHAW!!

by txagyprncs

It's been a few years since i've been to this restaurant seeing as I relocated to Los Angeles-but trust me-the trip is totally worth it. If you're going to be a snore and complain about long waits, then I suggest going to McDonald's, but if you want to chillax and try some of the best pancakes you've ever tasted in your entire life-come here.

Personal Favorites:

Strawberry Banana Pancakes

Cherry Pancakes

Cowboy Queso-YUM!!!!!!

This place is one of the reasons I miss Texas.

  • Pros: Amazing foods in different varities
  • Cons: Typically a long wait, which includes in inability to get your food in a decent amount of time.

Best Breakfasts

by GingerZ

There's no better breakfast in Austin. While their pancakes make them famous, their breakfast tacos and huevos rancheros are oveflowing with deliciousness. Staff is always super friendly and makes you feel like you've stopped by their house for breakfast. True, the waits on the weekend can make your tummy grumble so go either super early or very late.

  • Pros: great food and service
  • Cons: long waits for brunch on the weekends

Good even for meat eaters!!!

by travelbugg1980

Went here on a Sunday for brunch---was seated right away, service was good. What I thought was amazing though, was that I was halfway through my meal (and loving every part of it) when my date mentioned that it was a vegetarian restaurant!! I am a total meat eater, and there I was, chomping away at tofu and not even realizing it! Now THAT's good-cookin'-vegetarian!!

  • Pros: Great food, cute atmophere
  • Cons: none really. The food is all good!

A 24-hour eatery serving quirky versions of classic diner dishes alongside inventive vegetarian fare.

In Short
A typical Austin mix of students, professors and hipsters recovering from a night imbibing on the town, this place is cozy and homey. You're sure to happen upon an interesting conversation or two. A short stack of fluffy gingerbread pancakes will make you unable to move (other varieties available). A dessert that has to be ordered to be believed is the rich tofu chocolate cheezecake.

Don't waste your time or money

by ldup82

I've always heard good things about Kerbey Lane, but my experience was HORRIBLE! First it took twice the amount of time that they quoted us to get a table, then another 15 minutes just to get a drink. I ordered biscuits and eggs. I'm not sure how you can really mess that up but they did it. The eggs were cold and tasted as if they were made an hour before i got them then reheated and my biscuits were stale and cold as well. When i sent it back, my second plate had raw sausage and i had completely lost my appetite. To top things off we were there for almost 2 hours and I didn't even get to eat! My suggestion is to go to Whataburger and get a good breakfast in 10 minutes for much cheaper.

  • Pros: nice patio
  • Cons: everything else

Great place for breakfast!

by amill123

I love coming to Kerbey Lane for breakfast! Their french toast plate is great; the chicken verde omelet is delicious. I really like the atmosphere too. It can get crowded on the weekends, but if you go during the week many times you can avoid having to wait. Make sure to try the Kerbey Queso - yum!

  • Pros: Really great food, great setting.
  • Cons: Sometimes there can be a long wait, esp. on weekend mornings.
