This ex-californian was wowed
by nakra
I really enjoy going out to eat, and recently moved from Los Angeles where I had the opportunity to eat fantastic sushi all the time. I ate at many of the "best" sushi restaurants in LA regularly.
Moving to Austin, one of my concerns was finding good seafood and sushi. I had been to Uchi, and sure, it was good. But it was not authentic, and their sashimi/sushi was OK.
And then I went to Musashino. My wife and I got the "omikase" tasting menu- not a cheap option, but the option that allowed the sushi chef to really show us his stuff. And show us he did! I cannot express to you how awesome it was. As we devoured the perfect, well prepared sashimi and sushi, my wife and I kept giggling to ourselves and reminding ourselves that we were eating this in Texas! We both agreed that Musashino was the best sushi we had ever had. I proceeded to interrogate the server and chef on how they possibly could manage to get this quality of fish flown in to central Texas. We vowed to go back and to go back often. It is obvious why this place was packed on a tuesday: those who really know sushi, know this place is the best in town.
- Pros: unbelieveable, perfect sashimi and sushi
- Cons: if you want Uchi, go there instead

Best sushi and nice decor

I am going to Musashino at least once a month. I lived in Japan for 6 years and around San Francisco for 7 years. Sure there are a lot of good sushi restaurants in Japan but Musashino is still better than anything I've had before.
- Pros: Best sushi
- Cons: Long wait sometimes
Great sushi!!

Went here recently for the first time with my husband n found the place to be very quaint n private. I've never had sushi before and was pleasantly surprised that the waitress was so helpful in explaining to me the different fishes and how to eat it. Tried a stuffed avocado that was amazing.. And a fried icecream that was delicious. We'll definatly will be going back. It's a must try if you haven't been
best in town
by austinfooddork
you just cant beat mushashino for overall sushi experience. its authentic and delicious. the sushi pieces are cut a little thick for my small mouth but its always good.
youre safe to order things like sea urchin and ankimo here, as well as a really mean roll called the texas style, i think. stay away from the southsider. yuck...to sweet and saucy.
the desserts are worth skipping, sit in front of smokey at the sushi bar!
- Pros: classic style, fresh fish
- Cons: a little cold on the service side
Bad manners

My husband and I have eaten at this wonderful establishment more times than I can count. It is on our list as one of, if not the, best places for sushi in Austin. That being said, lately the service has really gone downhill. On our most recent visit a manager, whom I've never seen before (maybe he's new?) asked us to give up our table as we were finishing dinner and drinks with another couple. We had ordered two bottles of wine and spent quite a large amount of money on sushi. We were not trying to take a long time - we were simply finishing our drinks and using the restroom. I have never been so embarassed by a service person before. We were told there was a long wait and they needed our table. I have waited for tables at Musashino many times. Good food is worth waiting for - poor service is not. I'm not sure I would feel comfortable returning to eat with another couple. I felt like I was eating at a "turn 'em and burn 'em" rather than one of the best sushi spots in town. Truly disappointing.
- Pros: Great food
- Cons: Strange behavior from manager
Not As Good As It Used to Be
by JONeal
After being told 45 minutes for a table and waiting 1.5 hrs my group of 4 spent over $300 and were asked to leave our table 40 minutes after sitting so they could give it to someone else. We were about to leave, one person was in the restroom so they could have waited. Of course none of that mattered the next day because ALL 4 OF US WERE SICK. Had not been here in a while since the bad Food For Thought reports, should have not gone back. Good luck if you eat here, you'll need it.
- Pros: Good Selection
- Cons: Quality is Poor, Service is Poor and Overpriced
good sushi, bad value
by chiapet73
heard it was the best in town so had to check it out. the sushi is good, but like many other reviewers, i found it to be very over-priced. we went early so didn't wait and service was good.
- Pros: good sushi
- Cons: over-priced
Service with an Attitude
by tara188
The waitress was pretty snarky throughout the whole meal. She put the wrong meal down in front of the wrong person and just had an attitude about everything. But the crazy thing happened after we finished our meal. We asked for the check and when we paid we gave her $200 for a bill that was $135. She asked, 'do you want change?' Um... Of course we want change. So, she brought our change back but she didn't bring back the bill. We had to go find her and ask for the bill back, because after paying $135 seemed to be too expensive for what we ordered. When we got the bill back we saw that a gratuity had already been added. We only had five people, and I have never heard of a grauitity being added for less than 6 people. Plus, we felt like the reason they didn't bring back the check was because they were hoping we would pay the tip twice. It was very sketchy. I wouldn't recommend this place.
not so fast...

I ate here the other night with some out-of-town friends. After raving about it for some time, they were excited to finally have the opportunity to dig in. Well, lets just say I've had better sushi in the Dell dining room at work. The $5/piece of bluefin was brown (friends didn't even eat the other 3 pieces) the rolls crumbled (couldn't even pick them up) and the portion sizes seemed to have been cut in half. We were all very dissappointed, and I was embaressed with my choice of restaurants.
Also, as a follow up to the austin hippie's comment, my visa card was over-charged by $33.42...not really sure why, guess I'll give them a call too.
