Great Experience by Dorothy D. at InsiderPages

I loved my lunch at Botanitas! The atmosphere certainly makes you feel you've gone to Mexico, but the food even more so! I loved their generous portion of crunchy chips (the kind that have some substance to them) with a wide array of salsa's to choose from and they weren't stingy on seconds. Then I got the carne asada cooked medium with friend onions...wow..very tasty. I had the option to do Spanish rice or white rice with cilantro. I tried the white rice and it had such a delicate flavor which went great with the Black beans I chose and instead of a measly side it came as a very generous portion of great tasting beans...I love it when they give me a choice of beans and rice and good portion sizes! Best of all was the cheese enchilada that came with this combo dish...I chose the mole sauce....to die for!!! My mouth is watering just thinking about it...can't wait to go back! Definitely worth your money!

The inside of the place is fun - lots of stuff to see, but that's about the only good thing I have to say about this restaurant. They bring you lots of different kinds of salsa, but none that are any good. Their queso tastes like the cheese you get at taco bell and the chicken served as fajita meat was dark meat chunks, not grilled white meat chicken. DOn't waste your money here when there are lots of great mexican places around.
Disappointed

We decided to try this place after reading the reviews. We liked the atmosphere and the salsas, but that;s it. The queso tasted like the nacho sauce you get at the movie theater and thechicken fajitas were made with cheap meat - chewy and gross. We paid the same as we would at better places - so we were not impressed and will not go back.
- Pros: Ambience, salsa
- Cons: food, prices

In the shopping strip in between the sushi bar and kartie kids place stands the most best mexican restuarant you can imagen. The place is outstanding. With 6 different salas 1. Cilantro 2. Verde 3. Roasted peppers 4. Chipole/red 5. Blk Bean 6. Escarvichi veggies.Yumm! You might wanna ask for a water because it will come in handy! Everything is wonderful, there is so much to choose from on the menu. Their Chill Reno with pork and chipole sause on the bottom to make it the right touch is justt great! Along with Lime Cilantro Rice and Borracho beans! Over all this place is to good to be missed check it out!

"Rueben Rodriguez is Austin's grand master of the chile salsa -- of all types. Botanita's is the home of the famous chip tower, surrounded by veggie escabeche and five different outstanding salsas. Many incredible seafood items, excellent breakfast, great mole and homemade tamales, and some of the best enchiladas in town. The perfect plate? Smoked chicken enchiladas with chipotle sauce, lime-cilantro rice, borracho beans, and salad with jicama -- yummm. Probably by far the best interior food in Austin. There's a reason their a 10 time Austin Chronicle Food Critic Award Winner!." - Austin Chronicle
- Pros: Best Salsa in town, Incredible Interior dishes
- Cons: Way South
Old-Mexico ambience with some of Austin's best south-of-the-border cuisine.

In Short
Past the strip mall exterior is a vibrant place decorated with the flavor of Old Mexico; colorful rugs and large Aztec murals lining the walls. A treasure trove of memorabilia keeps the eye busy while taking in the fresh smells. Evita's has six famous salsas and hot tortilla chips. El Rey combos feature enchiladas, crispy tacos and tamales. The mole puebla is two enchiladas made with ancho, cascabel chilies, peanuts and chocolate.

Small place; family feeling. Great, authentice food. Service was prompt. I prefer these smaller, family-ran authentic places to the large franchise places.

As concierge I'm constantly looking out for new restaurants. My experience at Botanitas was at best average. After receiving our menus we asked if there were any specials and we were told no. The menu was on the pricey side for a whole in wall but expected good food. What I receieved although not bad, I could have gotten down the street for half the price. Upon leaving we went to pay for our meal when we see a lunch special sign underneath the register. We asked why we were not informed of the specials and were told you may only receive this upon "request". My companion was a little upset upon seeing the meal he paid 9 dollars for to be the lunch menu for four. I felt it was a little dishonest and there are to many great restaurants out there to waste my time with Bontanitas again.

This is Austin's best kept secret. The food is wonderful. The margaritas are a good price and where else can you get a bowl of chips w/ six different varieties of sauces (included with meal and not additional).
The food is always piping hot, the prices are VERY reasonable, and it is truly the best Mexican food I've eaten in Austin.
Service is great and all family owned. You must eat here if you haven't already.
- Pros: good price, good margaritas, hot authentic food
- Cons: parking may be full, no outdoor sitting
