Not a good place, unreliable, bad service

by samuri

I live in South Austin so have given this place many chances. Sometimes it is average but the last 2 times were so bad I just can't keep it in the rotation anymore. The service is always bad. Slow, forget things, you have to find them for your check etc. Which if the food is great that can be seen past but the last 2 times we had to send meat back as it didn't seem fresh and had a funny smell. The waitress agreed with us which didn't add to the comfort. Reading these reviews and seeing others had the same complaints thought I should post too. Seems like it's a pattern unfortunately. I think they have tons of potential there just need better servers and a once over on the kitchen and chefs.

  • Pros: Every now and then have gotten good food
  • Cons: Dosen't seem fresh, Horrible service

WORST hamburger (ever)

by waxx

We could not believe this was voted best burgers on citysearch. Did the people who decided this EAT BURGERS ANYWHERE ELSE?! We started doubting that the minute we walked into the dirty/rundown place. As soon as our burgers came out, we knew it was going to be bad. The meat was overcooked, tough, and dry- although it was claimed to be medium. Not completely inedible, but even a fast food burger beats this one hands down. The worse part of it was all the flies hoovering over us the entire time, which just reminds us that the food in the kitchen was probably contaminated. No wonder we were the only people there on a Sunday afternoon. Definitely not going back.

Amazing breakfast

by alanah

This place is a little gem of a restaurant which I found on citysearch when looking for breakfast places. We took forever to order because we couldn't decide on what to get! We finally ended up sharing the eggs benedict, one pancake, a slice of french toast and a side of refried beans and home fries. It sounds like a lot, and it was a lot of variation, but each part wasn't overly sized. This was my first taste of eggs benedict so I had nothing to compare it to, I thought it was okay. My egg was cooked perfectly and the canadian bacon was delicious but there was hardly any hollandaise on it and that was disappointing. Amy was disappointed by it and said she wouldn't order it again. The french toast wasn't very good either, we thought it needed some cinnamon or some other seasoning. The bread is made in house which is nice but the french toast itself didn't taste like much of anything. The refried beans were delcious, clearly seasoned or cooked with bacon or bacon fat, you can taste it, which makes it even more delicious. Definitely worth ordering again. The home fries had sauteed onions mixed in which added so much flavor and with an extra sprinkling of salt they were perfect. But the piece de resistance of the meal was the pancake. We got the apple cinnamon pecan pancake and, hold your breath, it was better than Kerbey Lane's pancakes! There were literally real pieces of apples and pecans in the pancake. You could tast the cinnamon and they are made with half whole wheat flour. They were flavorful and light and absolutely perfect. Over all it's a really cute place where it's obvious that most of the customers are regulars familiar with the waiters. It's a really chill, relaxed environment. And pretty cheap too, all that food came to about $12 each with tip (and we had some french toast left over)! For pancakes, I'll definitely be going back!

This was #1??

by jweb432

I was searching for a great place to have breakfast, and was shocked to see The Bakehouse listed as #1! I went there once, and only once, because I would never ever go back. I ordered your basic bacon and eggs, there was no one else in the restaurant, and it took 45 minutes to get my food. The bacon was old - so dry and hard I could not even bite into it - like it had been overcooked then left sitting for hours. My potatoes were completely inedible. Toast was barely toasted and soggy. I ate about 3 bites of it and could not manage to try any more. Awful awful awful. And the waitress. Could not possibly have cared less. Between ordering our food and getting it, we never saw her. After getting our food, we had to go tackle her to pay.

  • Pros: It is close to my house. Wish it was farther.
  • Cons: Awful food, awful service, terrible!

Flat out terrible

by themoho

I came into the restaurant expecting really good comfort food. When pulling into the parking lot, the place simply looked dirty. Once we entered the establishment, the dirtiness continued. Even the tables that were set for the next customer will still dirty. The decor was simply cheap and lacking.

The restaurant was pretty empty, but the service was horrendously slow. Took forever to get our drinks and food. After lunch, I asked the waitress for a glass of water, and she rolled her eyes at me. Instead of bringing me water, she vacuumed the entire restaurant and wiped off tables. Completely unacceptable.

The food was greasy, unflavorful, and just plain bad. The burger meat was terrible. It was overcooked and full of gristle. The chicken fried tasted like grease.

I will never come back to this horrible place.

great selection!

by PetalsATX

I came here to try the German food, and found it to be average. The wiener schnitzel could of used some seasoning in the breading, but over all it was satisfying. Service was right on time and polite. The overwhelming collection of international foods is what will keep me coming back. Good atmosphere.

Love the concept, disappointed by execution

by irishindc71

There are lots of interesting, delicious sounding items on the Bakehouse's menu. I loved the decor.

However, the overall effect of the food was bland and lacking. My wife's bratwurst was great, but all of the side dishes, including the warm potato salad (which was described as "heaven" by our server) were acceptable, not memorable.

I had a chicken florentine, stuffed with spinach and cheese. Very little flavor.

I've had truly bad meals, and this was not one of them. There were many good sounding items on the menu. I wouldn't drive far to give it a second chance.

  • Pros: decor was great, brats were tasty
  • Cons: flavor of everything else.

Go for the chicken fried steak

by toppertx

The Bakehouse menu is way too ambitious. I oder one thing only here: the chicken fried steak. This is the best CFS in Austin and one of the better ones in Texas. The meat is real round steak, not cube steak, and the batter is good. Not perfect like my grandma used to make-but good. The cream gravy is perfect.

Stay away from the international stuff. I do disagree with the reviewer who disliked the sausage crisp. It is a pretty good dish. The only thing that I would order if I didnt want CFS.

Unfortunately, criticism of the staff is not unfounded. As far as I can tell the owners have always had problems keeping good waiters and waitresses. I dont let it bother me though. I will put up with a lot for decent cream gravy.

  • Pros: Funky place with lots of Keep Austin Weird vibes.
  • Cons: Funky place with lots of Keep Austin Weird vibes.
