Excellent Indian Food. The best in Austin.

by pics4nic

I am picky about restaurants, but this is incredible. The buffet is always fresh and clean and the food is absolutely wonderful. I fell in love with this restaurant 7 years ago when I was pregnant and had read that Indian food is good for the unborn baby. We ate here weekly and have loved it ever since. The owners are so nice and are hard-working and it is a Mom and Pop place. Very Austin-like. Very friendly. Very local. Very excellent. The atmosphere is o.k., but the food is so good, it makes up for it. The atmosphere at Clay Pit downtown is better, but the food can't compare to Bombay!

  • Pros: Clean, fresh wonderful food.

Good Indian Food

by sputnik0110

Had dinner and ordered a combo with Sag Paneer, Naan, Daal and then also Lamb Biryani. Everything was great but definitely not the spiciest Indian I've had. Just good and tasty.

Great service and location.

  • Pros: Ample servings, fresh, nice atmosphere
  • Cons: Food not spicy enough for my taste

Just plain bad

by bryankerss

I love Indian food. Having just moved to the Austin area, I wanted to find a good Indian restaurant. My first attempt at the Bombay Grill was an abysmal failure. I'm generally not so harsh, but due to the discrepancy I found in reviews of this restaurant before dining there I wanted to be clear. It is not a good Indian restaurant in any facet. It's not terrible, you won't choke or die, and if you've never had Indian food before you won't hate it, but it is in no way good. The food lacked in spice and flavor. Everything was bland from the biryani to the curry. The mint chutney, usually a favorite dish of mine, was just bad. Even the chai was bad. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes Indian food, and if you've never had it, this is not the place to learn.

Better options; would avoid

by roforot

I have ordered and dined in multiple times. In Southwest Austin, there are no alternatives. The quality of food has gone from being average to below/unacceptable. Seasonings are often off and I suspect they are adding extra salt to "compensate." Service is slow but after all as a Buffet, you really don't need much from the wait staff, and the people there seem friendly and nice.

In last times w/ takeout orders however, they did not pack order correctly. Once gave me just the sauce w/out the Paneer, the "meat" of the meal. Other times, they did not pack securely; for me the last straw was when they forgot to put an aluminum foil cover between the lid and plastic bowl. WIthout this barrier the heat melted and broke the lid down so that we had to basically run the food through a colander to remove bits and pieces of plastic.

Hopefully, we'll get a decent alternative in this region, but I've decided for now that if I have to have Indian food, I will have to drive up to North Lamar.

  • Pros: Location in Southwest Austin region
  • Cons: Food, seasoning, service

Garlic Bread was the best thing. Service sloooow!

by the_verdict

It's an Indian Restaurant. Atmosphere is fine, Indian music playing, etc.. All tables come with 2 ramekins. 1 with red stuff and 1 with green stuff. After ordering I asked what they were for and she said to dip crackers or bread in. Now why would you give someone ramekins of stuff without the stuff to dip it in? It took a good 20 minutes for our crackers to come out! Green stuff tasted like liquid green beans. Red stuff tasted sweet with a strange aftertaste. Still not sure if I liked either? Garlic bread came out. AWESOME. If you love garlic I recommend this! Finally our meals arrived.. I had Tandori Chicken..I was disappointed because I didn't know the chicken wasn't in a chopped up form. it came out on a platter like well Roast chicken on the bone but bright red. A whole onion sliced and a bell pepper sliced. It was actually quite boring and my chicken was dry. My friend had something lamb but hers was good. Great rice, it looked like a green curry but I can't remember what it was. Not impressed with my meal but was impressed with hers. However, I don't know that I will go back there because the service was sooooo freakin slow!! We were 1 of 3 tables. Arrived at 530 and left at 7 or later?Anyway, I will try Indian food again, just not there.

Delicious Indian food

by nrbrandon

I visited this restaurant on a Saturday evening at 6pm with my boyfriend and while he chose the buffet, I decided to order off the menu. The Dal Makhani (black bean dish) and naan were excellent, and they offered several vegetarian items, which I was pleased to discover. My boyfriend (not a vegetarian) loved the buffet and I sampled some food off his plate, which was yummy. The decor is not that bad, as someone else mentioned...although it was extremely quiet when we went. The service was top-notch - not only did our waiter attend to us, but the manager & assistant manager checked on us, and were very friendly. I have been searching for a great Indian restaurant in Austin for over three years now, and I finally found it!

  • Pros: parking, service, yummy food w/generous portions

Great Indian food and an old-fashioned style makes it one of Austin's well-kept secrets.

In Short
Bombay Grill is tucked into a strip mall on Bee Caves Road. Inside, it's fairly modest: red and gold wallpaper, square tables with linen tablecloths under glass tabletops and strung beads hanging in the windows. The buffet offers several cold salads, soups, samosas, pakoras, tandoori chicken, curries and several vegetarian dishes. Entrees are an enticing selection of Indian breads, meats, lamb, chicken, biryani and seafood.

Great Samosas, Naan and Chicken Tikka

by nicpot

Really I'm just your intermediate indian food consumer but I have been trying all the restaurants in town and find Bombay to still taste the best. We went to Clay Pit for Valentines Day and I wasn't super impressed, probably because I thought they came so highly recommended that it would blow every other indian restaurant in Austin off the map. Not the case! Bombay still rocks for all the items and I'm sure when I learn to order something outside of my comfort zone, they'll still be the best. I've only tried 4 restaurants numerous times but Bombay keeps me coming back for the food.

  • Pros: Naan, Chicken Quality, SAMOSAS!
  • Cons: Ambiance, Location

Best Chicken Vindaloo in Austin, Tx

by speak_the_truth

The food is great and the Bombay staff is very nice. Ive eaten at the other Indian places in town and I keep coming back to the Bombay Grill. Not everyone likes spicy foods. If you do, then Id suggest trying their Chicken Vindaloo. This is by far the best Ive had here in Austin. At your request, they can make this or any dish as spicy or mild as you like. The buffet is good, but I usually pick Chicken Vindaloo off of the dinner menu and get my order to go. Oh, and their Naan and Mint Chutney are great also!

  • Pros: Great Food, Nice Folks, Prices are reasonable
  • Cons: None
