Went to this place at lunch time on a Friday. Although packed, some how their system works. Burgers, fries and onion rings were all very good. Prices very cheap. I didn't think the burgers very very greasy at all, compared to Hut's Dan's beats em in taste and Hut's wins as more greasy and much more pricey.. Neg: Poor parking lot, atmosphere (decor is zilch).

Pros: Burgers, fries, onion rings

Cons: Parking lot, lack of decor

Was looking forward to eating what I paid for. The "add jalepeno's" on my burger consisted of a 1/16" sliver of the end of jalepeno and that was it. I got ripped off. The burger would have benefitted from this addition.

If you are going to get a quck burger and fries, dump McDonald's and come to Dan's. The service is quick, and the food is awesome. I have never had a bad burger here and The fries come out fresh, hot, and delicious. They only accept cash so be prepared before you go, but this is one of my favorite places for a fast meal.

Pros: Great Burgers/ Fries

Cons: Cash only - be prepared before you go

One would think that this kind of food would be bad for your health, but the average age of the clientelle here is about 100 so they must be doing something right. SImply the best burger anywhere. And the breakfast is wonderful as well. Their breakfast tacos have hasbrowns in them which makes them just perfect. The burger is fantastic - something about the way the burger blends with the cheese & the bun all practically melting together .. superb! It's everything a buger should be - yes it's greasy (that means juicy), but who wants an old dried up blackened burger? Not me! The staff is always super-nice as well. But the morning staff does seem a little stressed out sometimes, because it is always SO busy in there for breakfast. A+

Pros: delicious

Cons: cholesterol

You can't beat the quaility and the price anywhere. We take our out of town guests to Dan's when they are looking for a great old fashioned hamburger. They could add something like corn dogs for the little kids to their menu, but really we have no complaints at all.

Just Moved to Austin 2 months ago. I tried it once after being in town after a week or so and now I am addicted. Hands down the best hamburger I've ever had. The only thing I don't like about Dan's is that it is not in my backyard.

Pros: tasty

Dan's is as American as a fourth-of-july parade. This is the best place to get a burger, fries, and milkshake meal (don't miss out on the milkshakes!!). It's the perfect "fast-food" place--like what McDonalds should be, but isn't.

Great burgers for those days when you ARE NOT counting calories. Reminds me of a great place in Houston. Fries are good and all is served in a funky dining room with funky people.

Dan's has many different excellent breakfast choices, depending on what you might prefer. Their egg dishes are tasty and for old-fashioned Southerners, they have the best sausage gravy over bisquits available in Austin. Also, their prices are VERY reasonable.

Pros: fast & good

Cons: noisy

Editor's Review

Old-fashioned, greasy, fried-on-the-grill burgers in a no-frills setting.  See the full editorial review.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Dan's and the South Congress Fran's used to be one and the same--used to be. She got half, he got half. They're both definitely worthy of a fun taste-of-Austin test for visiting meat-o-philes.
