Blah

by ssassey78 at Citysearch

The only reason I'm giving this place 1 star is because a rating is required to post a review.

We opted for the buffet since it appeared to have many choices....bad move. The naan was burnt. The Tandoori Chicken was dry. The Samosas were luke warm and lacked the garaam masala flavor. The Beef Vindaloo was bland. The vegetable fritters were soggy. I could go on. The only thing that was not horrible on this $10.99 dinner buffet is the lamb meatballs. Save your money and find some other place to eat!

absolutely the worst!!

by bmalen at Citysearch

The owner of this place, the guy with the white beard, is possibly the biggest bigot Ive encountered in Austin. My wife and I are a mixed-race couple (African-American/ South Asian), and we were actually refused service here. We walked in and were told by a waiter to take a seat at a table. We didn't want the buffet, so we sat at our table for almost 10 minutes waiting for service.

When I approached the owner at the front and asked if we'd get served, he basically kicked us out and called me a n*gger!! I can't believe it's 2009 and people like this still exist - in Austin of all places. Avoid this place.

Passable, but not the best

by nydgill at Citysearch

I found plenty of variety on the buffet and the food was good -- but a few dishes weren't the best. The naan was burnt -- edible-ish, but black. The saag paneer was a little off -- maybe not as creamy as I'm used to? I don't know. The samosas were a little on the bland / empty side.

Still, they had a lot of variety on the buffet, and the other dishes were good, if not the best ever. I was surprised to find samosas on the buffet at all, and I really enjoyed the Vindaloo and the Chicken Tikka Masala. Service was good too, although I'm not exactly high-maintenance in that regard. They cleared my empty dishes and kept my water glass full. I'll probably go there again, because the location is convenient, but I don't know if I'd drive past other Indian places to get there.

Terrible

by adrihat at Citysearch

This is the worst Indian restaurant I have ever been to! I have never bothered to write a review for a restaurant, but this will be my first. I don't want anyone to make the mistake I did by trying this place out. The quality of the food was poor and really lacked flavor. The curry tasted watered down and runny. The naan seemed as if they bought it at the grocery store and heated it up before putting it out on the buffet. If an Indian restaurant can't even make good naan, that really tells you something.

Worst Indian food I've eaten!

by 20080324 at Citysearch

I was at Star of India's dinner buffet recently, and my experience is similar to that of many other reviewers. The pakoras had no filling, the 'paneer' in the matar paneer and saag paneer was really tofu, the sweet chutney was canned cranberry sauce, and the 'chicken' in the chicken pakoras was fish. The gulab jamuns in the dessert section were gone in spite of the fact that it was 6:30 pm. They weren't replenished for the next half hour that we were there. When I asked about the chicken/fish, the owner/manager basically called me a liar. We later found out we were overcharged by $5. When I called about this charge, the manager first refused to come to the phone, and when he did, he again called me an ignorant liar, and refused outright to do anything about the charge. He actually told me I'm the first person EVER to have issues with my bill. As an Indian, I find the practices of this restaurant particularly offensive, and would recommend everyone I know to avoid this place.

Pros: We were seated promptly.

Cons: Awful food, rude and dishonest management.

Mediocre food and a ripoff too

by atxdiner16 at Citysearch

Firstly, the dinner buffet was a total disappointment. The pakoras and samosas barely contained any filling and were greasy. The palak paneer and naan bread were OK at best. I didn't even bother trying most of what was available because it looked so unappetizing.

Secondly, the price they charged for the poor quality of food is disgraceful. To make the experience just that much worse, I checked my bank account today and noticed that what I was charged for the meal was more than the amount I had authorized (I even tipped 15% despite the underwhelming experience). I noticed that other people have commented about being overcharged, and all I can say is that I hope this restaurant's dishonest practices are noticed by more people so that something can be done about it.

I will not be recommending this place to anyone, in fact, I will be warning people to stay away!

Excellent Indian Food, Kind Staff

by maxelias at Citysearch

I can honestly tell you this place is very special. I recently visited this restaurant and left with such a great impression. Mr. Singh is one of the most genuine and hospitable people i've ever met. The food is fantastic and the staff is warm and welcoming.

Worst Indian restaurant in town

by crazydesi at Citysearch

Worst Indian restaurant we have ever been to. The Indian lady over there is highly rude and didn't even

bother to find out what was wrong with the food. The food was stale

and even the salads were atleast 4-5 days old. Not even a single

item over the lunch buffet was eatable.

Instead of listening to our complaints, they just handed us the check

with a statement that none of the other customers had any issues.

Beware Non-Indian people trying out Indian cuisines, this place

doesn't even come close to the rich quality of Indian cuisines. This

place is really awful and go at your own risk. Its a shame on the face of

Indian restaurants.

HIGHLY NON-RECOMMENDED. Neither us or any of our friends will

ever visit that place........

Great selection, great taste

by andreasm at Citysearch

I cannot wait to go back to Star of India. I was pleasantly surprised when my boyfriend and I were there for the dinner buffet. Some of the dishes were not all that hot unfortunately, but the selection was varied and delicious. We were seated promptly and our servers were very friendly and attentive. Great value for the low price we paid.

  • Pros: great food, great service
  • Cons: buffet was warm, not hot
