Great Food... Horrible Service

by Lingo1981

I absolutely love Korean food, and I heard this place was great. Well the food is, but the service is absolutely horrible. I am normally a great tipper (20-25%) and I contemplated not tipping at all. I thought to myself who would get the tip anyway? We walked in and someone took our order, and we got most of our order. But if you wanted to add something or change something or ask for more water or beverage (forget about it). It is as if they go out of their way to avoid you. I walked away with a bad taste in my mouth, not because of the food but because we were treated horribly.

  • Pros: Great Food (if you get it)
  • Cons: Horrible Service!!!

Excellent Korean food, but don't expect much else.

by False

Korea house is a great place to get Korean food at a reasonable price, especially the Bulgolgi or Bibimbab. The sushi is lackluster for Austin. Frequently, the sushi menu will not mention every ingredient (such as cream cheese). Also, the service ranged from decent to poor. Bottom line - Go to Korea house for Korean food not for Japanese sushi and not if poor service can seriously hamper your ability to enjoy the food.

A great place for reasonably priced sushi

by marciaustin

I have never eaten any of the Korean offerings, so I cannot speak to that. However, the sushi here is good (not great, but you're not paying Uchi-prices either). I like to sit at the counter and watch the chefs prepare the sushi - and they always give you a couple of additional (free) treats. Have some sake and enjoy a relaxing evening.

  • Pros: good prices for good sushi

Poor Service and Tasteless Food

by ATXNOLAgirl

Being it was my 3rd visit, I was expecting good food and service but was very disappointed. My party and I came in an hour and half before closing on a week night but was treated with unattentive service. The staff was more concerned with their "closing duties" than my order. We ordered 3 items but only got two and were charged for all 3 items. I had to ask for my side dishes that come with every korean dish and my stew was very tasteless. I had the stew before but this time the stew tasted like they just made it with whatever was left in the kitchen for that night. The entire experience was bad and my party and I went home disappointed and hungry.

The Best Korean food

by frikenfrack

This place is unbelieveable. The food is great and the price is unbeatable. If people are allergic to seafood don't eat sushi!! It's common sence that all sushi has seafood in it. Would recommend this place to anyone who loves korean food.

  • Pros: Good food and good price

Great Food

by db2776

Let me begin by stating that the service at this restaurant may come off as a bit brash, however please do not judge the establishment by this alone. What some individuals fail to realize is that certain cultures, Koreans included, are not by nature overtly friendly or outgoing. I've witnessed this in various settings and have concluded that it is purely cultural and by no means personal. That said, do not expect a "chipper" waiter or waitress at Korea House, you will be seated, your order will be taken and you are left to your meal.

As stated, the food more than makes up for staff. I enjoyed the Tonkatsu and my boyfriend the Bi Bim Bop. Both dishes were delicious, including all of the small side dishes. I especially enjoyed the Mung Bean Sprouts and the Kimchi.

I've searched along time to find a Korean restaurant which serves the aforementioned dishes, and am happy to have found Korea House. I will surely become a regular.

  • Pros: Wonderful food
  • Cons: The decor could use some updating

Avoid if you have any food alleriges

by Canela1

If I could give it less stars I would- This Place is NOT - I repeat NOT for anyone with any food allergies. HAd dinner there and ordered sushi- one roll did not mention crab stick which I am extremely allergic to- needless to say I had eaten a good portion before I noticed that it was in the roll - after we asked the waitress she sent over another woman whom we spoke with about the missing ingredient on the menu - I knew I was going to be very sick. There was no apology from the woman instead I was told they did not have enough room on the menu to add all the ingredients to that one roll- even though there was plenty of white space. - We checked the menu again- every ingredient was listed on every other roll except this one- rainbow. Not only that but she said I should have known to ask the server - there was no offer of any kind- quickly asking for the bill before I began throwing up- they also charged us for the roll! Unbelievable - no apology at all on the way out she said thank you come again! Really?

There are plenty of other establishments in Austin with good Sushi and Good etiquette - spend your money elsewhere

Plenty of Panchan (Banchan) at Korea House

by fsloan

Spent 10 minutes trying to find them, I gave them a ringy-dingy and they directed me to their destination within the Village Shopping Cntr.

I sat at the sushi bar and ordered plum wine, cooked eel, tuna, white tuna, surf clam, and flying fish roe). Pretty fresh. Beautifully displayed. The regular orange tobiko was dressed with red and green(wasabi) tobiko.

I ordered the classic Korean dish, Bi Bim Bop - a homey mosh of vegetables - mushrooms, sprouts, seawood, etc, sesame oil, beef slices, and spicy kochujang sauce topped with a raw egg. YUM! The rice was on its own platter and I decided not to indulge since I wanted to make sure I had room in my tummy to continue savoring every morsel.

No one sat at the sushi bar so I had loads of room for my sushi, Bi Bim Bop, and a parade of 11 bowls placed on the sushi bar in front of me.

These 11 dishes, panchan, include kimchi and a variety of pickled and preserved vegetables and seafood such as the chicory herb (YUM), spicy radish, sweet soy marinated potatoes (PALATE PLEASING), soybeans marinated with soysauce and sugar (REALLY GOOD), fishcake, HoBak Na Mul - Zucchini (AHHH!), bean sprouts, cucumbers, kimchee .

You can eat the panchan however you please. Panchan can be thought of as either an appetizer, an appetite stimulant, or even a condiment.

The roller coaster of taste took my palate on a wild journey of sensations and experiences! Korean food isn't like other food in that it has strong flavors and very strong spices. I was in foodie heaven!

The wait staff was very cheerful, helpful, & courteous. Quite surprised because I have read bad reviews re: the staff.

The chef suggested I come back for the barbecue. I will be back and may swallow some of that potato liquor as well.

Since I pigged out on the sushi, the bill was a reasonable $37 including 20% gratuity. A normal cost of a good meal at Korea House would be less than $20

I will be BACK!
