Service has really gone to hell!

by arthur_frayn

Tien Hong use to be one of my favorite Dim Sum restaurants in Austin. Not Any more. My last visit was Saturday with a party of 9. The wait staff was rude and the service was horrible! To begin with, we could not seem to get tea brought to our table. When someone with a cart came to the table and we would ask for tea we were told that it wasn't their job and that we needed to ask a waiter. When we asked if the server could find our waiter we were told "no". Another time we were told "I'll tell him if I happen to bump into him". Finally one of us had to get up and go search for a waiter. Most of the Dim Sum we were served was cold. I will never return to Tien Hong and I will tell everyone I know to avoid it.

  • Pros: They use to be very good
  • Cons: Horrible service

No longer in business

by gingersue2

This was my son's favorite dim sum, however, sadly it is no longer open as it closed in July. We were there on the last day of business (which was a Sunday) and it was a zoo and they were even selling the lobster tank and the waiters all had hand-made TShirts commemorating Tien Hong (and some were seeking employment). There is no new location, however, they own the TC Noodle house in Chinatown center on N. Lamar (haven't tried it yet).

Awful Customer Service and Horrible Food

by wiseone7

The service here is laughable. My server was inattentive and careless. The ambiance is lacking and I am not sure if the place is up to standard as far a sanitization is concerned....

The shrimp made me sick.

I would not recommend this place to anyone.

  • Pros: none
  • Cons: horrible service, inattentive service, rude management, shady, dirty disgusting interior

Not Hong Kong, but good

by capriisle

Dim Sum at this restaurant is one of the best in town with T&S being the second. The food is "good" and the servers are always conscientous and friendly. I would suggest going at least once to share this fun experience with your family and friends. Large groups seem to overwhelm the staff -- so stick to a small group of (4) or so. The pricing is not like eating in China, but is comparable to other American food places here in the USA. I would avoid the BBQ pork as this is not their strong suit -- that honor goes to DinHo. Finally, their selection of dim sum is diverse and should please everyone.

  • Pros: The food is consistently good
  • Cons: The parking lot is CRAZY -- like driving in Beijing

DR SKULL! Here I come!

by cken

Been here many a time. Try the DR SKULL mixed drink- devine. MMMMMM. We love the salt and pepper chicken dish. I have yet to try the DIM SUM, but cannot wait to soon. We've dined here in large groups many times. The service is always great. It's far from home, but worth the drive. Convenient to North and North Central Austin.

  • Pros: DR SKULL, delcious dishes
  • Cons: sometimes the Dr Skulls come too slow.

Extra Awesome Food

by joebroome

I drove from South Austin to eat at Tien Hong because I have been to all the Dim Sum places in town. There is no comparison to any of the others. The variety of food (traditional Chinese and also some American influence), the art work and the quick responsiveness of the individuals working there was extraordinary. The basic Dim Sum cost $1.90 each and the fancy ones were $3.10, so we ate like pigs and my girlfriend and I still got out of there for $21.00. There was one upset waitress and I worried that her husband or family must be cruel to her to make her so short tempered, but I am going to make the drive up north every weekend when ever I possibly can.

  • Pros: Easy parking in a crowd, cute women rolling the carts around, beautiful art work
  • Cons: One grumpy waitress

Best Dim Sum in Austin

by pinoyvlf

Tien Hong can get really crowded for Dim Sum on Sundays, and after eating there you will see why! I have never been to this restaurant for regular chinese food, but this huge place does serve awesome Dim Sum. If you have never had Dim Sum before, I strongly recommend coming here to expericence it. It isn't the best I have ever had, but for anywhere in Austin it is the best (althought there arent that many places). The prices are decent if not cheap. There were times where the service took awhile to refill our drinks or for the cart we wanted to come by. If you really want a certian cart to come by, just ask any of the servers what you want and they will bring you some! Come here for to share in the expericence of eating dim sum with some friends for a cool time and great food!

  • Pros: Great for Dim Sum
  • Cons: So-so for everthing else

This reliable standard packs in the crowds for weekend dim sum feasts.

by Contributor

In Short
This cavernous restaurant is often packed, especially during the Sunday dim sum brunch when crowds spill into the parking lot. Once seated, diners experience a cacophony of sounds and smells as waiters crisscross the restaurant floor with steaming dim sum carts and trays loaded with dumplings, buns, cakes and various noodle dishes. The vegetarian options are extensive and include tofu dishes and imitation braised duck made of wheat dumplings.

are you serious?

by atxindiekid

I always drove by Tien Hong, but never tried it. After reading some of the other reviews I decided to. I was not impressed at all. The review about this place not being "americanized" was probably written by the owner. I had the General Tso's chicken and sweet and sour pork. Both tasted like the cooking oil they used was 6 months old. I couldn't have been more disappointed with the food and the price of the meal. The service was good, and the inside of the restaurant was ok, but if you want real chinese the best I have found by far in Austin, is Din Ho chinese bbq. Don't waste your time here if you like real chinese food taste.

  • Pros: Not busy, plenty of room
  • Cons: americanized chinese, bad wonton soup, pricey for quality

Austin's own Chinatown

by orangewindow31

Tien Hong satisfied my craving for Chinese food. The first time my boyfriend and I went to Tien Hong, we arrived on a cold and rainy Saturday and the place was pretty empty. We were immediately greeted with a huge smile and served right away. The food came quick and was great except for the shrimp puffs which were more breading than shrimp. The wonton soup also left a lot to be desired but the main courses (twice cooked pork and beed broccoli) more than made up for it. The restaurant is one big room, i wish it were more cozy as it gets loud when there are a lot of people.

  • Pros: friendly staff, good parking, great dim sum
  • Cons: wonton soup , very bright
