Older Nostalgic skating rink! by Sammy W. at InsiderPages
Contributor at Insider Pages
This is an older skating rink with a huge skate floor. The decor is nostalgic with lots of lighting and disco ball lighting as well. They also sell skates and extra accessories. (this is a regular skating rink, not an ice skating rink). During the week it doubles as a Bingo Hall (mornings and mid-afternoon). It's a great old building and the kids really enjoy it. The snack bar is small (but the food and snacks are great) and the restrooms are for little people - stalls are not built for adults!
PROS: Great Old skating rink - Tons of space!
CONS: Bathrooms stalls are tiny!
Texas Rollergirls feel your pain...Get Your Roller Derby Fix
by 26ranches at Citysearch
Saturday, December 1: Texecutioners vs Mu?ecas Muertas
Derby addicts, have you felt sad and empty since the Texas Shootout? Do you find yourself obsessing over knee pads and fishnets? Do you walk around aimlessly, marking days off the calendar and counting the endless stretches of time until you can get that next derby fix? Then you, my friends, are suffering from a serious case of derby withdrawal. Luckily for you, Texas Rollergirls feel your pain and are ready and eager to satisfy your cravings with an all-star bout against Duke City's Mu?ecas Muertas.
Belly on up to Playland, Saturday, December 1st, to get your shot of pure, hard-core derby--Texecutioner style. These third-in-the-nation skating machines are revved up to take on Albuquerque, New Mexico's finest dolls on 8 wheels. In a departure from usual Texas Rollergirls style, doors open at 7:30, and game night is on Saturday, so no excuses for missing the all-star afterparty (unless you've got to get to church early the next morning).
As a special treat, you true derbyholics get to satisfy your derby jones for free if you bring your 2007 Pack badge. This one's on the house--cuz that's how we roll.
Date: Saturday, Dec 1
Time: Doors @ 7:30 p.m.
Place: Playland Skate Center, 8822 McCann Blvd (183 & Burnet)

Roller skates. Pop music. Relive the '80s in the new millenium.
by Contributor at Citysearch
In Short
The center, whose motto is "they didn't make skating rinks like this when your parents were kids," has given a facelift to the old school roller rinks. The hi-fi is replaced with a state-of-the-art sound system. The requisite disco ball is actually a giant, shimmering disco roller skate. A DJ spins a mix of old disco standards and new bubble-gum pop to please the over-30, as well as the 13-year-olds.
Good Space, Bad Tunes

I'm really glad there's a rink in town that has adult skate night, even though they recently jacked up their price for admission. The rink itself is decent, but they play the same songs every week, so it gets kind of boring. I don't mind 80s music, but there's some garbage mixed in with it. They could try replacing the garbage with some good modern rock or electronic music. (Not into the lewd R&B or sappy ballads either.) Oh yeah, and they took out the tetris arcade game--NOT COOL!!
- Pros: Adult Skate
- Cons: Crustilicious Music, Lack of Tetris
Good but could use improvement

This is the best of the rinks in Austin (and surrounding area) I was kind of dissappointed in the diversity of music. It has a fairly large skate area, which is also used for roller hockey and bingo center. I think this place would been 100% if the floors were professionally done regularly as the floor gets flooded from time to time and has cracks.
- Pros: Adult Night, Large Floor, Decent Light Effects
- Cons: Floor has cracks, Music isn't diverse, Building is run-down
