great for beginners really wanting to learn!
by chicsndvl
This gym is great! I actually took the boxing class through UT-Informal classes. I was freaked out at first because I read these reviews, but let me tell ya, I'm glad I took this class.
keep in mind, I'm a 23 year old girl who has never boxed in her life!
You work you butt off, literally! There were about 30 minutes of warm-ups, 30 minutes of intense core/abs workout, and an additional 30 minutes of hands-on boxing training. Some days we did "shadow boxing" where you work on your stance and technique and have the instructors come by one-by-one and gives you tips/pointers/suggestions and other days we get to use what we learned on the bags.
Richard Lord is also awesome! He is there every class and is willing to give advice. I was at the speed-bag and was having trouble; he came up and actually stood there with me bunching the bag with me to help me get the hang of it!
You feel like you want to quit about 17 times during your hour and a half work out with no a/c, but once you?re done you feel invincible. You?re like ?yeah, I just did that!? It makes you feel really good, both physically and mentally.
Bottom line, this is not for sissies, it's for people who want to work hard and get their butt in shape! I actually am sad the days that I don't get to box!
- Pros: hands-on training, sweat, real boxers, great trainers
- Cons: not for people you don't want to sweat and get in shape
If You Want to Learn to Box... Look Elsewhere.
by potter2
If you are an established pro fighter, then I'm sure Richard Lord's gym is wonderful, but as someone who wanted to learn to box, I was pushed aside and given little or no attention.
If you want to learn to box, I'd look elsewhere, and particularly for a smaller gym where you can get 1-on-1 attention without having to pay an arm and leg. Ann Wolfe's gym has a great kids program, and if you just want to get in shape or learn to box, the Harmon Street Gym (rigt behind Wolfe's), is a great value.
- Pros: Great... if you're a legitimate pro fighter
- Cons: Awful... if you're just learning

don't go there if your looking for a nice gym with mirrors to stare at yourself all the time.the train you proper and leave you learning each time.not there to make friends, just keep to yourself and train hard.only a place for people serious about boxing.a no bs gym

- Cons: no ac, oh well, train oldschool

There will be jump roping for 25 min. an ab class for 15, and hitting a bag with no instruction at all. I explained my needs, he took my money, and that was the last I saw of the guy. If your looking for instruction, look elsewhere.
Great Boxing Gym!!!
by diggittyy
If you are looking for a great boxing gym, look no further!!! With plenty of space, bags, weights and two rings in the gym ...unheard of in other boxing gyms....There are plenty of people to help you out, if you have questions and sparring if you are up to it!!
- Pros: Inexpensive, Good advisors, hours of gym
this is what a gym is supposed to look l

I hate gyms in Austin. Either they are full of guys with fake tans in spandex, strippers, or girls in makeup looking for a date. This is a real gym: no makeup. No fake tans. No air conditioning. You come in, you work out hard, you leave. You are not going to find a date for Friday. You are not going to find friends with whom to play poker. You are going to work out until everything hurts and you can't take it anymore. And then, you are going to go home, look in the mirror, and be very, very pleased with the results.
- Pros: parking, not too crowded, not a meat market
- Cons: no AC
