Good place for the dogs to get some swimming in

My dogs love swimming in the creek! There don't ever seem to be a ton of people, which is good if you'd like to have some quiet down time.

My only complaint was that one of the times we went, there was a warning sign about toxic spillage. I don't know how often that is a problem but it was disconcerting.

• Pros: Dogs love it!
• Cons: Warning sign about toxic runoff.

A Insane Place with Baby-Faced Killers

This Place, Man, has got to be the Wildest, on Earth. I'm from the Sixties, dig it, but, when I saw all of the Austin, Homosexuals, shooting up, that Green Algae, whoah!! differences.. Then, Two, Young College Men, were mad because, they couldn't get into UT, or, wow-man, the One Dude, Stabbed the Other One, in the Throat-Daddy, turned that Creek into a Fountain of Blooood Essee!!!!, Other than that, a Beautiful Place, to take the Kids.

My pups' favorite park!

The major dog attraction at this park is the creek itself, along with the grassy areas alongside. Both are away from the parking lot, so you don't have to worry about your off-leash dog running into traffic. Both shallow and swimming-depth (for dogs) areas are available so all sizes of dogs can enjoy the water. Big trees provide shade on hot days and squirrel-chasing opportunities. I've never seen the sand volleyball area used for volleyball, but the dogs sure enjoy rolling and digging in the sand! There are usually dogs around to play with, but the best playtime is usually around 10 am to 2 pm on weekdays and all day on weekends. There's a no-swimming sign posted at the leash-free area of this park, but wear water shoes to wade in the creek for a wet version of fetch. The parks department keeps dispensers well stocked with Mutt Mitts, so picking up after your pooch is easy. If you choose to bring food to the park, be prepared to be harassed by begging pups. Lakewood Drive is accessible from both 360 and 2222.

• Pros: Fun social time and exercise for dogs, multiple play areas at the same park, parking is usually adequate, naturally beautiful
• Cons: Can be crowded on sunny weekends, not all dog owners pick up after their pets

In Short
Just north of the Farm Road 2222 exit and on the east side of Loop 360, Bull Creek is a small district park complete with a volleyball court and hike-and-bike trails. Picnic tables are available when your stomach calls and bathrooms when nature calls. The epicenter of Bull Creek is, of course, the creek. The creek is low in the summer months, but draws the most swimmers in the spring when rains fill the creek.

Canine Nirvana in West Austin

So many dogs say the same thing: Woooooof! This place is awesome. My dog is sort of the beta guy with other dogs, he does whatever the other dogs tell him to. So when he goes here, he has fun, and lots of it. The dogs and people are generally very very friendly. I freaked out the first time I saw a Rottweiller there, and soon realized that this dog was very friendly, and my non-alpha dog was soon running with the "big dogs" and having -- literally-- the time of his life. Common sense must generally prevail: if your dog doesn't get along with other dogs, stay away! But if you have a friendly guy or gal who likes to run and play with other dogs, fetch, play in water (not required), play chase, or just walk the trails with you (Master), this is a great place.

• Cons: poop left on ground, whining kids

Great.... unless

The park is a gem unless it gets overrun with people and their screaming kids. This place is an off leash dog park and people bring their toddlers who 1)are usually afraid of dogs and 2)don't respect the dogs for what they are. Worrying about someone's kid hurting or scaring my dog and consequently being bitten is too much of a liability and an inconvenience to go there when it is busy. If you have dogs, I'd suggest going on a cloudy day or right after a rain. Don't even bother on nice days- just go down to Red Bud Isle instead.

• Pros: creek for swimming, lots of dog play area, overall nice crowd
• Cons: , disrespectful people, parking when busy

Not Bad, Not Great, But Good

When the water is flowing it's a pleasant escape, especially if you venture to the less-crowded area around St. Edward's Park. Lots of trails.

• Pros: Hike & Bike Trails, Some swimming, Pet-Friendly
• Cons: Parts get crowded, Creek yucky in places
