Great Cajun in Downtown Austin

by PaddyMcP at Citysearch

Before going, I wasn't sure Gumbo's would be able to replicate a New Orleans fine dining experience in downtown Austin. But it did a great job.. from the moment I walked in the door it felt like I was in the Crescent City.

The food was great, as well. I was there for lunch and had to have the Catfish Jambalaya. Mmmm-mmm, tasty. Lightly battered catfish served over crawfish etoufee and rice made my day. Probably not the best I ever had, but I left more than satisfied.

Always Good

by Avg Joe at Citysearch

I have been going to Gumbo's for the last ten years. Sometimes once a week, other times once a month. The food is always excellent. I highly recommend trying the special. The waitstaff is very friendly and they work hard to make sure you are taken care of. My favorite dishes are the Blackened Salmon Salad, Greek Salad and Daily Special. If you are in the mood for dessert I would highly recommend the bread pudding (chocolate or vanilla) or the chocolate custard.

  • Pros: Excellent Specials, Great Quality Control
  • Cons: A bit too expensive to eat there regularly

Gumbo's is to Cajun as Chuy's is to Mexican

by JulieInWellsBranch at Citysearch

Don't get me wrong, the food at Gumbo's is most excellent and I would definitely eat there more often if I could afford to do so.

I can't think of a dish I've ever had at Gumbo's that wasn't well executed and enjoyable. Many of the dishes are food that would never be found anywhere in Louisiana, and the style of preparation is not what you'd find should you find that dish in the first place.

But each region cuisine is adapted to whomever adopts it, and so it is with Gumbo's.

If you want strictly authentic, find wherever Mike and Yoli are cooking today, or else drive to Lafayette or New Orleans.

  • Pros: Excellent food
  • Cons: Not authentically New Orleanian / Cajun / Louisianaian.

Never Again!

by Nonya69 at Citysearch

From the pretentious host to the cold food, they could not even get my reservation right. After trusting Gumbos to a large party of out of town guests, they truly disappointed me with slow service and a table that was not even ready when I arrived; even after calling 30 minutes in advance to let them know we were on our way. I am saddened and greatly disappointed with our entire evening. With all of the amazing restaurants in town Gumbos needs to step up their customer service and quality of food.

  • Cons: cold food, poor service

Very Good Food....

by jennnyyy39 at Citysearch

I went here with a friend and just fell in-love with the place. Awesome place with a real delicious menu and cool people. I've had a few things on the menu like - the schrimp cocktail, the caprese salad, the chicken dixie..

All are freaking super-deliciously good!

.

Prices are not bad at all and you definitely get your monies worth!Service was perfect and very friendly.

I recommend this place to anyone and everyone!

Simply marvelous!

by MsReality at Citysearch

We went for a birthday supper for one of my dearest friends and it was fabulous. The service, the food, the whole package. I read these reviews prior to going, and I had to laugh at goatmaster. I'm certain he had a real laugh writing that review. However, I suspect it to be at least partly farce. No one in the kind of income bracket he portends would be such a dreadful writer. I had fun counting the malaprops. As an educator of over 30 years experience, I find that it is usually the poseurs who write such dribble and then use incorrect grammar. Seriously! "your" when you mean to say "you are!" Go to Gumbo's; take all your money; enjoy!

Serving rich, classic gumbos, seafood and steaks in the swanky, historic Brown Building.

by Contributor at Citysearch

In Short
Gumbo's brings in the rapidly expanding downtown crowd. Business types and older couples dominate here, and seem right at home in the swanky surroundings of the historic Brown Building, with its high ceilings, green velvet curtains, mosaic tile floors, art deco posters and lighting fixtures. Old-style Cajun predominates. Blackened catfish is swathed in crawfish etouffee. Tenderloin George is marbled Angus beef with a thick mantle of sauteed crabmeat and bearnaise.

We love this place!

by texastzu at Citysearch

The food and service here are always wonderful. It is a beautiful restaurant with wonderful ambiance. We've dined at restaurants all over the world and this place is really among best in terms of tasty food. The dishes are always consistent and well made. You really can't go wrong. Do I care what anyone else is wearing? No. We come for the food, not to critique the clothing of other patrons. If that is all you can complain about this place, they must be doing something right.

Simply Awesome !

by john_huhn at Citysearch

Great meal, great service ! Started off with a Almond Goat Cheese salad. It was very tasty but a little small (the right size for me, but not enough for two). Then, I tried the Shrimp Etoufee ... a little spicy for me, but delicious. Then, the best part, was the entree. I had the Redfish Almondine and loved it ! Also, try the Dirty Rice .. goes great with the redfish. Overall, fantastic ! ... I would recommend getting a booth.

ps... I did read some of the prior critics, and, yes, the parking attendants could be dressed nicer, i suppose (although i think they were fine) ... however, they are very attentive and hardworking (ran to get my car, opened both car doors, etc.)

  • Pros: Redfish, service, valet
  • Cons: solid value but not cheap
