Very Good Food....

by jennnyyy39

I went here with a friend and just fell in-love with the place. Awesome place with a real delicious menu and cool people. I've had a few things on the menu like - the schrimp cocktail, the caprese salad, the chicken dixie..

All are freaking super-deliciously good!

.

Prices are not bad at all and you definitely get your monies worth!Service was perfect and very friendly.

I recommend this place to anyone and everyone!

Simply marvelous!

by MsReality

We went for a birthday supper for one of my dearest friends and it was fabulous. The service, the food, the whole package. I read these reviews prior to going, and I had to laugh at goatmaster. I'm certain he had a real laugh writing that review. However, I suspect it to be at least partly farce. No one in the kind of income bracket he portends would be such a dreadful writer. I had fun counting the malaprops. As an educator of over 30 years experience, I find that it is usually the poseurs who write such dribble and then use incorrect grammar. Seriously! "your" when you mean to say "you are!" Go to Gumbo's; take all your money; enjoy!

Serving rich, classic gumbos, seafood and steaks in the swanky, historic Brown Building.

by Contributor

In Short
Gumbo's brings in the rapidly expanding downtown crowd. Business types and older couples dominate here, and seem right at home in the swanky surroundings of the historic Brown Building, with its high ceilings, green velvet curtains, mosaic tile floors, art deco posters and lighting fixtures. Old-style Cajun predominates. Blackened catfish is swathed in crawfish etouffee. Tenderloin George is marbled Angus beef with a thick mantle of sauteed crabmeat and bearnaise.

We love this place!

by texastzu

The food and service here are always wonderful. It is a beautiful restaurant with wonderful ambiance. We've dined at restaurants all over the world and this place is really among best in terms of tasty food. The dishes are always consistent and well made. You really can't go wrong. Do I care what anyone else is wearing? No. We come for the food, not to critique the clothing of other patrons. If that is all you can complain about this place, they must be doing something right.

Simply Awesome !

by john_huhn

Great meal, great service ! Started off with a Almond Goat Cheese salad. It was very tasty but a little small (the right size for me, but not enough for two). Then, I tried the Shrimp Etoufee ... a little spicy for me, but delicious. Then, the best part, was the entree. I had the Redfish Almondine and loved it ! Also, try the Dirty Rice .. goes great with the redfish. Overall, fantastic ! ... I would recommend getting a booth.

ps... I did read some of the prior critics, and, yes, the parking attendants could be dressed nicer, i suppose (although i think they were fine) ... however, they are very attentive and hardworking (ran to get my car, opened both car doors, etc.)

  • Pros: Redfish, service, valet
  • Cons: solid value but not cheap

Tad (Goatmaster) and Buffy should go back to Fantasy-ville on their private island

by goatmastermustdie

If anyone reading gives any regard to goatmaster's review, then they should go off to live in Fantasy-ville as well. Is this even a serious review? I mean come on, the guy is outraged that the people in the establishment are wearing 'last-years fashions' and that his 'Buffy' didn't get to sit where they were accustomed to? What a crybaby, you sit where there is available space. They didn't mistreat him in any way, and his complaints were absent in what should really be the only two fields to comment on: The food, and the service. No complaints there, huh goatbaby? Well there's a reason, I've been to the establishment and they were both great.

I'm personally not a fashion expert. I didn't attend fashion school, I don't have personal shoppers and people dressing me every morning, and to be quite honest, I don't even watch E! So maybe I was one of his complaints. I couldn't quite tell you what season's clothes I was wearing. I guess that means I shouldn't be allowed to eat at a great restaurant. Well, at least according to Captain Snob. Fortunately, he doesn't run the place, so if you're like me and reasonably well mannered, hungry, and looking for a fantastic meal and good service, check out Gumbo's, it's definitely worth your time - assuming that your Bentley isn't in the garage and you're just too ashamed to be seen rolling up in your Benz.

Things I'd recommend:

The gumbo, obviously. My family is from Louisiana and I've had a lot of gumbo before, and Gumbo's, fittingly, has some of the best I've had in a restaurant.

The tenderloin St. Michael is fantastic. Beef cooked perfectly, and the sauces are great.

  • Pros: Food
  • Cons: Stuck-up people like goatmaster might be there

The Humanity!!

by goatmaster

I have to agree with sinsu in saying that I will be hard pressed to ever again break bread at this once fine establishment, until I can receive assurances that a much stricter dress code will be enforced. Last Saturday evening, my darling wife and I were looking particularly elegant, when we decided that we must simply go out to see and be seen. Our drive went without incident, and our anticipation of another chic meal grew as we drew near the valet stand. As we pulled the Bentley alongside the curb, to our horror, a rather shoddily dressed valet approached the vehicle from my driver's side. Not only did he fail to open the door for my beloved Buffy, he left fingerprints on the front left area of the hood. I know that these valet types are used to parking people who are only able to afford Toyotas and Hondas, but more attention should be paid to preferred customers. And it didn't stop there. Sure, we were quite late for our reservation, but is that any excuse for the hostess to greet us wearing last year's fashion? I wouldn't normally complain, but she was wearing open toed shoes and her colors were not at all right for the season!! We had to wait nearly five minutes to be seated, and even then our favorite table was not available. Much to our dismay, we were instead seated much closer to the kitchen than what Buffy is accustomed. And as if that were not enough, there was a party seated not more than twenty yards from us that appeared to be drinking a bottle of wine that was not from the premium end of the wine list, if you know what I mean. I understand that many of the less fortunate are not able to afford all of the finest all of the time, but the gentlemen (if you can call them that) at this table were not even wearing dinner jackets, and one of them was wearing brown shoes with a black outfit. As I'm sure you can understand, we were quite embarrassed to be seen in this sort of company, and will not be frequenting Slumbo's in the near future.

What happened to this place?

by sinsu

My very first review,

Firstly, Gumbo's is NOT cheap. A single dollar sign for price is funny. The wife and I have been eating here for years and I've never gotten out under a hundred bucks for dinner. So if thats cheap then I would hate to see a 4 dollar sign for price.

The food is outstanding, the wait staff is impeccable, I dare to say the best in Austin. You will want for nothing! Your glass will always be filled with water and if you drink they will have another one on your table before your first is empty. To me thats service. This is one reason why I have always come back and taken friends here that are visiting from out of town.

Why 2 stars then you ask? At one time Gumbo's was place to dress up and start out your evening. I would wear slacks and a dress shirt (long sleeve) my wife in a pant suit or dress. We recently visited Gumbo's on a saturday night with friends and everything was as expected. We were seated, the waiter was on us in a flash, welcomed us to the resturant took our drink order and was away. We settled in and then I saw it.....The table or party rather next to us were in flip flops and baseball caps. I then glanced around the dinning room and this was the norm. I would say half of the patrons were in some sort of T-shirt and or tennis shoes, I was appauled.

Im not a snob by any means and everything has it place it the world. What gets me angry is if your going to pay for valet parking, shell out 100 or more dollars on a meal (for 2) why would you want to be surround by a "Chili's" Crowd? Perhaps I expect a bit too much now days, but what happened to dressing up and going out? You could do it at Gumbo's but not anymore Im afraid. Its just sad to see a nice place go down like this. I felt cheated, after paying over 300 dollars that evening on dinner. I think next time we will eat at Mccormick and Schmick or Ruths Chris, dont think they will let you in with flip flops.

Shame on you!

  • Pros: Great food and service
  • Cons: No longer expected to dress for the occasion.
