Service is very bad
by bobbymsp
Three single people at the sushi bar, two couples at tables...two servers sitting at the bar. It was impossible to get service, but I could see the two servers sitting at the bar. NO service following initial order. I finally walked up to them and handed them the credit card. One got up to run the credit card, while the other had the nerve to ask how everything was. Though sushi was not bad, I would never return.
- Pros: Sushi is not bad
- Cons: Service is terrible
The food is great and recommended

The resturants atmosphere is very dazziling and beautiful. I would suggest the Sashimi which I believe is very refreshing. I will also suggest some of the saki to those who like to drink. They are strong but very good. The service is pretty decent but there is times were you have to wait a time. The pricing for the food there is very decent and not really overpriced. When my friends and I went there for the first time it was very warming and we have been going there very other week. I would suggest that you sit at the sushi bar because not only do you get to see the great sushi being made but the chefs are very fun to talk to and are good company. Those who enjoy sushi I recommend to come to Umi.
- Pros: Parking, Sushi, Ambience and Price
- Cons: sometimes service is too long
UMI....EWWWWW
by mandi2225
I am an avid sushi goer and this is the second to worst EVER and thats pretty darn bad...Absolutely tasteless and way overpriced...we were fooled by the nice atmosphere...I try to focus on that when I think of what I spent and still went to Sandy's hamburgers to finish the job...yummy!! So thank you Sandy for saving an almost devastating evening...lol
- Pros: nice atmosphere
- Cons: terrible food, way overpriced, rude waitress!
never go there
by rex222
I have been going to umi for years. I always seat at the sushi bar with all my friends, just to visit one of our favorite chef (po) that he continues to excel in all categories. Once we know the Chef (po) no longer works there. We will never go back, cause don't worth the time, money, the quality is overpriced ,poor service and they are rude!
Umi has frozen fish and a bad attitude
by sushigroove
Umi is a disaster. We waited 45 minutes (in an empty restaurant) for a roll and some sashimi. The fish finally came out and it was frozen solid. We were overcharged for the few things we ordered that were edible. The server was totally checked out and the manager was aggressive and unhelpful. The place reeks of cheap air freshener. Very lame experience all around. I will never go there again.
Best Sushi for the price
by RicoSuave84
Now me and my wife are no sushi experts, and we pretty much stick to the basics when it comes to ordering. No eating what we don't recognize on the Menu. We know the Chefs there and they always treat us with great service. We never sit anywhere other that the sushi bar. Thats the place to be if you want the best service because the chefs are right across from you. Plus you can learn a litlle more about whats good and whats not by asking them. Overall great service and food. Heck, one of the chefs even went to my wedding. GREAT FOLKS DOWN AT UMI. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!! :-)
- Pros: Chefs
- Cons: none to my knowledge
not renowned for lunch i guess, but dinner is very good
by jimmyivory
I've never been there for lunch so I can't attest to or rebuke all these folks saying it was terrible, but I've been there 3 times for dinner and enjoyed each experience. I went there again last night with my homegirl, split the chef's dinner (pretty big sushi/sashimi platter for about $32), and stuffed myself with what we both considered Very good sushi. I'm not a buff, but I've eaten sushi several places around this city and this is top tier in my opinion. Only issue now is I think their cheapest cold saki is $21/carafe. it bites, but what would sushi be without saki?
service was very good (average sushi prep time)
food was very good
price was a little high, but sushi almost always is
the music was really bad techno (this last time only)
- Pros: good food and service
- Cons: not cheap
this place isn't bad

A friend and I recently had lunch here. It was pretty empty, but we sat at the sushi bar and had a nice chat with the friendly sushi chefs. Maybe it's just because I had never been to a sushi restaurant (I get my sushi from HEB), but I thought the sushi was very good, and it was a nice presentation. The lunch special was very affordable--it was about $12 and my friend and I split the 10-12 pieces of sushi. If this place was closer to my place up north, I'd probably go here more often.
- Pros: staff, lunch specials, nice atmosphere
- Cons: location
Sub-par sushi and god-awful teriyaki
by tireprezzure
This place is a joke. Their lunch crowd (I counted less than 10 people in a max capacity of 100+) should tell you something. Sushi (lunch A) was sub-par and room temp, decor was like Night at the Roxbury, humidity and smell inside were like beginning of summer in corduroys, and the music was constant, repeititve prepubescent Michael Jackson.
Prices were ok, for lunch and parking was good, so that's a plus. But nothing made up for what my friend ordered - beef Teriyaki a la McDonalds. I know a sushi specialty restaurant is not a good place to get a grilled dish, but my God this was terrible teriyaki. It tasted exactly like a BigMac, overdone, sliced and grilled with bonus flab and extra gristle. She considered sending it back, but decided that lunch should not take 3-4 hours. The waiter also decided not to remove it from the bill, despite the entire portion still sitting on the plate. I thought about taking it for my dog, but remembered how inconvenient it is to clean carpets at 2am.
Before you think about going to Umi next time, try making your own sushi with your eyes closed and one hand tied behind your back. Or just get some fish sticks and soy sauce packets from Mamu Fu's House of Kung Pao Pants. I do not recommend that you try Umi, unless you like week-old tasting sushi on sale and teriyaki that tastes like mad cow, toilet tank marinade.
Do yourself a favor and head to Maiko, Oregami in Round Rock (fam owned) or Uchi (if price is no object). Even the waitresses are scrubby looking at Umi. You'd think that would be one of the easier things to fix.
- Pros: plenty of parking (wonder why?)
- Cons: sushi tasted like kitchen sponge
EEWW!!!
