This is one of the most customer friendly bars
by fblooking
first want to say that I've been coming to this bar for years and I have never had a problem with the staff/manager. This is one of the most customer friendly bars I've even been to. If you're looking for a good time, good drinks, and great customer service well then the Chuggin Monkey is the place to go. The staff and manager rock.

Horrible Bar Manager!!!!!
by jasland
Went to this place because nothing much was open. We found that the manager had a attitude issue that needed to be resolved with the organization in the bar area. After attempting to be nice, (in order to not hurt anyones feelings) we found that the Bar amanger(guy with brown hair and a beard/stauche) was really inappropriate. He started going after not only us but other patrons of the bar for nothing!!!! he was so un-professional, other people started to leave before we did. this guy had no idea of what service was!! all he cared about was the hierarchy he felt by saying he was "the manager"!!! never going back and neither will anyone i talk to. sorry , bartenders were great but when he got involved it ALL WENT SOUTH!!!!
- Pros: hot women bartenders
- Cons: horrible manager running the show!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BEST JAGER BOMBS AND MUSIC!
by love6thstreet
I had such a wonderful time at the Chuggin' Monkey! There were 3 hot girl bartenders who were so cool to me. As a woman, other ladies aren't always nice, but they showed me a great time! The live band was awesome and afterwards the music was great. They play a variety of music from micheal jackson to new hip hop and rock n roll. Not to mention, the jager bombs are the best on the street! Overall: great staff, great service, great music!
- Pros: great staff, music, atmosphere, good specials
- Cons: it closes at 2am!
OK for kids, I guess...

To be fair, the first Saturday of '08 was the first time I've been in a bar of any kind for many many years. As I've gotten older, I feel less need to go out, and virtually no need to drink. But on the prompting of a friend I had not seen for many years, I decided to join her and some friends for a night out here.
The bar is very clean, and waitservice was prompt. The atmosphere was not to my taste in general, as the music mix was uneven, it didn't make me want to keep dancing, and the DJ was not much of a mixer (beat changes, gaps between songs, etc.). Plus, they had this really irritating habit of substituting words in the songs lyrics by killing the music and saying "jagerbombs". After a few dozen times, it got really irritating.
If there is a beer special, I guess it's probably not a bad place to go.
Reality Check...

I've been going to see live music at Chuggin Monkey for over 3 years and have always had a great time listening to pretty good bands. The woman who is complaining about bands' compensation may not quite understand how the "business" aspect of live music works. (I used to do booking for a popular austin venue)... Bands get paid 10 percent of the ring at most 6th street bars as an incentive for the band to promote themselves. What's the point in opening a business if you are going to just give your money away to an ungrateful musicians who don't understand their part of the deal. How much of that $500 do YOU think goes to "bills"... That electricity you plug into isn't free... Those shots of jager "on the band's tab" aren't free... The rent in those expensive 6th street buildings i'm sure is a whole lot too.
By the way, I was there for your show on wednesday and I saw you repeatedly light your cigarette on stage after the bartender REPEATEDLY told you couldn't smoke. I also saw you try to bowl over the door guy like a football player to get back inside. It probably didn't help that you were absolutely hammered, either
As someone who cares so much for Live Music in Austin it pains me to see how things have changed over the years. Live music is dying and it is the primadonna attitudes of unworthy musicians like the one complaining bass player that has contributed to the slow death of "The Live Music Capital of The World"
If bars like Chuggin' Monkey are worth slamming on this website, why don't you go buy a bar on 6th street and book your favorite bands every night, pay them 20 to 40 percent, and see how long your bar lasts.
love,
A lover of Austin's live music scene

- Pros: Good Music, Good Service
Never again

As a musician, I can sincerely say I received worse treatment in this bar than any place I have played since 1994. The owner is apparently TV's "The Bachelor" but still sees fit to pay the band no more than 10% of bar sales (think about it...if the bar makes $500 on a weeknight, the band gets to split $50 3 or more ways). I have a stomach flu and had to walk off the stage last night. I left the bar and was very upset that I had come down to fill in for another bassist, basically for free, when I was feeling so bad. A friend went onstage and played bass for the last 20 minutes of the night and I waited to get my gear. As a 5'3" woman, who had not been rude to anyone in the bar, I was absolutely horrified when the door guy wouldn't allow me in the bar to retrieve my equipment!!! The bar manager told my fiancee I had flipped someone off, which was a total lie. I literally had to fight the door man off to get in the bar to get my stuff. I have bruises on my arms from it! I am completely livid and would not set foot in the place again if you paid me. I went out of my way to help these guys out on a last minute gig and got treated like dirt from start to finish.
- Pros: None
- Cons: All
Short hours, live music and owners/bartenders who remember the regulars' names.

In Short
The laid-back atmosphere offers two levels, a pool and an outdoor patio. Many customers are in their 20s and 30s. College and pro football are shown on the more than 15 TVs placed unobtrusively throughout the bar on Monday nights and every weekend. There's also live music Monday through Thursday nights. Besides draft and bottled beer, the full bar boasts kamikaze specials and flavored margaritas from apple to watermelon. The signature Chango Borracho (Drunken Monkey) potently mixes peach schnapps, coconut rum, banana liqueur and juice.
