Going downhill

We have enjoyed this restaurant 3-4 times over the past year but a recent visit left us feeling we will be in no hurry to go back. Pulled pork sandwich very salty and seemed like it might have been sitting around awhile, and our coconut cream pie had big lumps of egg in the custard and burnt crust. Yuck! It's really a shame, there are not many choices for home cooking in the northwest area (without going all the way to Marble Falls).

Good soul food

I've been to the original Hoover's a few times, on the east side and have always enjoyed the experience. When they opened a new location in North Austin, I had to check it out. I have been to the new one a few times now and have always had great food. The location is not the most popular and I often wonder if Hoover's will make it in the new location. I think the Hoover's name brings a big enough draw for them to survive and I hope they do, because they have great food.

• Pros: Great food, lots of parking, great service
• Cons: Not the easiest to get to, the ambience just isn't the same as the original

The restaurant features a simple design that's warm and welcoming. Diners can sit at light pine booths with bright red seats or at small tables covered with butcher paper. A large storefront window lets in lots of light and a bar in the corner can satisfy your thirst while you wait for a table. Chef/owner Hoover Alexander offers daily specials. All entrees come with two sides, of which there is ample selection.
