Loudy non-chic place
by luludheir at Citysearch
I went to Uchi to celebrate my wedding anniversary, and this was the mistake.
The place is very loudy, as if you were in a street market, everybody shouting.
Food: sushi is good, but everything that is fusion is terrible. I´ve been eating in some of the best restaurants in the world and their raw tuna & goat cheese (which they are so proud of) makes no sense at all.
Their chocolate sorbet was also made of very poor chocolate quality.
- Pros: Sushi
- Cons: Salads and fusion
Too Expensive
by KMCATA at Citysearch
Good atmosphere, but that was the most expensive place for the amount they serve. Great Service, nice waitstaff, but the food is extremely expensive. Reminded me of an over priced Hollywood hangout adhering to rich celebs. I used to live in Vancouver and for the meal we had tonight, would have spent 1/8 of the amount. We wont go back for this reason...
- Pros: The cooking stone
- Cons: The price of Sushi
uchi thinks it super cool
by austinfooddork at Citysearch
uchi has really gone down hill from the heights they once were. the portion sizes get smaller each time i go, and don't bother ordering off the specials page. i had a truly horrible lobster dish there the last time i went.
it just seems like this place has lost its sheen. maybe its because the head chef is NEVER there. the waiters seem pretty full of themselves, and honestly kind of put out to even be at work.
fav menu items:
carpaccio, crunchy tuna roll, great toro, and a yummy peanut butter dessert.
- Pros: excellent fish...most of the time
- Cons: snobby, loud, don't bother with the cooked food
Bad service!!!!!!!!!!!
by atownpri at Citysearch
I've been to a lot of sushi places and this is just not it.
If you love fusion stuff, this is the place for you buddy. It's very overpriced, with very very snobby waiters. Portions are way to small.
If you have unlimited amount of spending money. you can go here.
but for regular people like me who actually wants to be full by spending about 70dollars for 2 people, don't go here.
- Pros: Tasty food
- Cons: Worst service I've seen in years, itty bitty portions
The Emperors New Sushi!
by missimpossible at Citysearch
You've got to be kidding! This place is a pretentious joke! The quality of the sushi was good, but not the best I've had. I've lived in Seattle, San Francisco, and LA - heck even Atlanta had better! Their prices are outrageous - $32 for 4 postage-stamp sized bites of Toro? $28 for 5 equally tiny slices of Maguro? Ok so they beautifully displayed it on a large scoop of crushed ice and stuck an exotic flower in the bowl - kudos for presenation. Further, they have a limited selection of rolls and are not flexible- e.g., I asked if they could make me a rainbow roll - the sushi chef said, No, they dont make those. I said, you've got all the ingredients, why not? He said we just do what's on the menu! Also, the miso was only so-so. The service was poor from the onset - While waiting for our table, we sat at the very small bar and ordered 2 glasses of wine - my date went to the restroom. The bartender filled the order and asked for payment upon delivery. I said we were having dinner, couldnt we transfer the check. He said no, that they didnt transfer checks so he had to collect payment right then-he stood there basically waiting for me to cough up the cash, which I did. When my date returned from the restroom he asked why I paid - I told him the bartender made me (guess you had to be there, not sure this is translating well). Basically, I think he was worried he wouldnt get his tip if he let the drink tab get away. I feel for him, but it doesnt do much for the customer experience - especially when their prices are so exhorbitant. Bottom-line: their prices are not justified by their quality of fish or service. I would much rather eat superb sushi at my favorite LA hole-in-the-wall at afordable prices.
- Pros: Prestigious Chef - you can say you dined at Uchi which may impress the pretentious
- Cons: Exhorbitant prices for good, not great sushi, and poor service
Really?

I went to Uchi during the longhorn game to avoid the wait, apparently a bad choice as the main chef must have gone to the game. (Another table of frequenters told us the head chef was not there) It was SO BAD. The miso tasted like out of a can, I didn't even finish the sushi because it tasted like something had gone bad. The sauces were gross too. I'm from California and used to eat sushi weekly, I wasn't into all the weird 'fuzion' ingrediants Uchi mixed together, I like plain 'ol sushi, requiring good fish (the tuna in their case looked almost purple!) If you are a sushi fan looking for good sushi go to Moshachino. I might go back just to see if it really was because the head chef was out, but if that's their excuse for such bad food its a poor one...
- Pros: Good decor
- Cons: Tasted gross!
Too "Small" to taste
by poteetie at Citysearch
I went this restaurant with my friends because this is their favorite restaurant. The dishes they serve are pretty nice, fresh, and looking good; however, every amount of food is TOO SMALL TO TASTE. Especially Sushi, I couldn't believe it was as small as my thumb! (or maybe I have biggest thumb in the world). If you don't like fresh raw fish or sushi but want to act like "A RICH-COOL-GUY" for your girlfriend, this place is for you.
- Pros: Interior
- Cons: Price & amount of food
After Uchi, now home making mac & cheese
by jt8 at Citysearch
We just went out with another couple and put down a ton of money at Uchi. The food was very good, but the portions were insultingly small for the price. It was like in the cartoons where they bring a guy a big platter, uncover it and present him something like a single bean. I don't mind that we had an hour wait, but generally after such a long wait, people are ready to eat - not pay $17 for three tiny little slivers of fish. I left there starving, and tried to go to the McDonald's down the street. It was closed, so now I'm home with the Mac & Cheese. Also, the service was not good. They brought out our first roll, and we had to wait quite a while to get some wasabi and ginger.
Heavy on style, light on substance

Uchi is a great place to get dressed up and feel trendy, and the food presentation is excellent. The buzz on Uchi seems to center around them having excellent Japanese cuisine, and what they serve is not the best as far as Japanese food is concerned. It's fusion, not Japanese food. Their presentation is playful and cute, the hot rock wagyu dish is fun and tasty, but after my overpriced nigiri fell apart before I could even get it in my mouth I was left feeling that if Uchi is going to present itself as a top notch Japanese restaurant, they need to work on their fundamental skills before adding all of flowers, elaborate presentation, and overall frou-fra. This is sushi for Americans, and there's nothing wrong with that, but if you're looking for something more traditional and authentic I would suggest looking elsewhere.
- Pros: Presentation, Interior Design, Service
- Cons: Authenticity, Sushi, Noisy
