We enjoyed
by JeffreyAH at Citysearch
We gave it a try. Liked the food but I agree with a few of the others, needs a better atmosphere.
Great food

A few weeks ago I went to Uchi for the first time after hearing about it from a few other friends that are sushi fans. I took a date out to the restraunt and there was a wait so we hung out for a bit before being sat. When we were sat our waitress came up to us and took our drink order. When she came back I decided I wanted a seaweed salad with octupus 1 for each of us. She proceeded to ask me if I've ever had this and go on to explain very poorly how their seaweed salad is different from the seaweed salad we are used to (it seemed she was trying to talk us out of getting it) anyways we sat for a few minutes before someone came by and dropped 1 seaweed salad off at our table. I looked around and it sat in the middle of the table for a few minutes because we were'nt going to start eating at different times. After having to flag our waitress down she said she thought we only ordered one and ran to get another one. While she was in the back someone brought us out 2 delicious soups and when our waitress returned with the 2nd salad (the other one by this time was not fresh like it should've been and I could taste it, I gave my date the fresh 1) she said "Enjoy those soups that are on us I guess?" so someone made another mistake but this time it benefited us so thats a plus. After the salads we were brought the most delicious appetizer. I believe it was called an avocado bake. Trust me and try it if you go but the huge problem was that we were'nt giving any utensils to eat it with. The amazing looking appetizer sat in front of us for at least 3-4 minutes. By this time I was really feeling just ignored. The only person who was taking care of us was this AWESOME server assistant. He was tall bald and older than myself (sorry if you read this s.a. just wanted to include you in this and i dont know your name so i thought i'd describe you lol ) anyyyways I didnt want to complain because my date was in town from Cali. and I wanted to have a nice evening. She did point out the poor service though. By the end of the meal I just expected more to go wrong. Our waitress didnt talk to us and I'd of rather tipped the S.A. A BIG positive was when our sushi was dropped someone who looked like a manger dropped our sushi rolls off to us and explained all the food with great detail, I was impressed. I'd like to close saying I am a waiter at a very nice restraunt that I won't name for several reasons. Great food not a great waitress. I hope to never give service like the service that was given to me here.

over the trend...
by foodjunkie67 at Citysearch
ive been a long time sushi bar regular here and have watched the restaurant grow into the busy trendy place it is now. ive always enjoyed the quality of the fish and the excellent service provided by their well versed waitstaff. but i think i have had it with uchi. not only has the wait become completely ridiculous with a bar ill equipped to handle the volume of business they have but i think the chef's ego has outstripped his abilities. i have personally seen him scream curse words at his kitchen staff and management during dinner, and be incredibly rude and dismissive to his customers. ive been turned off by his stuck up behavior, and as a result, his restaurant. mr cole's expanded ego wall of newspaper clippings finally matches the size of his head. i wont be back.
Highly over-rated and way to pricey for what you get

Frankly, I was pretty underwhelmed by this place. The nigiri pieces were tiny and incredibly pricey. None of the bites left me feeling satisfied because the fish was sliced so paper thin. The wasabi was incredibly diluted and tasteless. Not sure what kind of soy sauce they have out at the tables, but that was pretty bland as well. It tasted very watered down. Though the quality of the fish was fresh and tasty, I definitely don't think it's worth the price. Menu choices were pretty limited. There were only a handful of roll options on the menu. Despite rave reviews of this spot, Austin still has a ways to go in getting the sushi right. I would much prefer the joints in LA and the Bay Area.
- Pros: Fresh fish
- Cons: Tiny portions, exorbitant prices, not even comparable to hole in the wall joints in other cities
Yum Yum

Wow what a cool place. The decor, the food, the cool people, this place is the hotspot for sure. The food is top notch and exotic. Wish Uchi was cheaper so we could eat there all the time. Price doesn't slow the place down cause it's always busy. Great date place. Expect to spend $100 or more for date nite but worth it. Very memorable.
- Pros: Food
- Cons: cost
Best Sushi EVER!

I am never dissapointed when I come here. I do recommend making reservations if you can. They are usually filled up way ahead of time. We try to go very early as in 5:30 because it fills up fast. I love the sawagani fried crab they are so fun and tasty. The hot rock sear it yourself is also great and fun.
I highly recommend the japanese black snapper, it melts in your mouth. Their spider roll is unequaled anywhere in Austin. The Shag is also wonderful.
I love the unfiltered sake takara nigori, and at 25 dollars a bottle at Central Market (30 at Whole Foods) it's cheaper to have cup it during their happy hour. They are VERY generous with their servings.
I'd so much rather spend my money here than at Hudson's.
- Pros: food food food, and oh yeah the food
- Cons: kind of noisy, always full
Tiny overpriced food
by musicmanfz at Citysearch
The atmosphere is nice and trendy, but the acoustics are so bad that the place becomes overly loud easily.
The waiter was a tad snobby, though not to excess, but he kept dropping the ball on our orders (typically forgot items). That's bad enough, but when we would point out the mistakes, he would look at us like we were insane. Maybe he has Alzheimer's.
The food, while tasty and artfully presented, is SMALL, and extremely overpriced. We spent around $75/person, and I left feeling like I had eaten an appetizer.
The suzuki was very delicious -- a high point in an otherwise disappointing experience.
If you want good sushi at a resonable price and quantity, there are a number of other options you should explore. For half of what we spent at Uchi, we could have done quite well elsewhere.
I'm just glad my friend was buying that night.
- Pros: trendy, pretty food, tasty
- Cons: tiny portions, overpriced, too loud
It's ok
by crewgal at Citysearch
The sushi was good, service pretty good, but atmoshpere is horrible. We were sat at a table where I couldn't even lift my chopsticks up to take a bite without my elbow hitting the railing. The table was barely big enough for 2 drinks and appetizer plates. This may have worked for 2 small children, but definitley not 2 adults. This place seems more of a "to be seen" place than a true sushi experience.
- Pros: Service
- Cons: , Value
