Worst. Place . Ever
by adowning
I ordered their lunch bento box which, per menu , comes with california roll and miso soup. Food tasted very mediocre and they DID NOT GIVE ME MY DARN CALIFORNIA ROLL. I paid $15 for this.. Never again. Stay away from that place.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Expensive, poor service, short your orders
HOW IS THIS RESTAURANT STILL OPEN?
by mattioi
HOW IS THIS RESTAURANT STILL OPEN? Ordered shrimp and chicken hibachi take out with salad and soup. EVERYTHING WAS TERRIBLE! Shrimp was way too salty and the chicken was painfully dry and tasteless. Salad dressing tastes like crunchy mustard. After tasting everything, me and my girlfriend decided to throw it out and grab McDonald's (not kidding). This is the first review I've ever written. It was such a terrible experience, I felt everyone should know about it."
- Pros: Nothing
- Cons: Everything
Not impressed
by rachd23
My husband and I went tonight. We absolutely love sushi and were just not impresed with Dragon Gate. We tried the calamari, which was the oddest thing I have ever seen! I am used to round calamari served with a sauce, where tonight it was little sticks served with chopped onions and jalapenos. What?! We also tried the 360 roll and the Spicy Crab roll. I just wasn't impressed. It tasted to me like the seafood was frozen. When our bill came and it was $71 I was just shocked. We could have gone to Truluck's for about $20 more. :-( If you try this place I would stick with the Chineses menu...the couple next to us ordered Chinese food and seemed to enjoy it.
- Cons: Frozen seafood
Ok food, bad reviewer 2 people below
by shaft28
The sushi was not bad. We tried 5 or 6 different rolls and found the Spicy Crab to be the best. The Philly roll was fine as was the shrimp tempura roll and the others we tried, The Volcano roll was quite good as well. We did dislike the soy sauce as it was very strong, which is to bad as I love to have a ton of wasabi in it but just too strong to use.
Service was fine although on a Monday night with very few customers in the place they could have been more attentive.
Overall the price was $72 for the sushi which is just too much for the average sushi. I can spend the same amount at Musashino and get WAY better sushi. Plus I'm always suspect of a Sushi place that also offers a full Chinese menu too - specialize in one thing and be really good at that rather than offering a ton of options and just being ok at it.
In reference to the racism 2 reviews below below...yes this is America the melting-pot of the world. If you really want to complain may be it should be that they don't speak Tonkawan or Comanche...really are you going to show that much ignorance? I thought that school of thought went out for people who knew how to use computers, you give Texan's a bad name..
Sorry, I just can't stand racism even in this backhanded manor.
great sushi!
by soleyb
I've been here several times with my boyfriend and we both love the sushi. The rolls are some of the best I've had, not too much rice and a lot of meat. My favorite is the Spicy Crab roll :) The sashimi I think is a little on the expensive side, but once you see the portions you understand why. I haven't had any of the entrees but I definitely recommend Dragon Gate for the sushi. It's always quiet inside and the atmosphere is nice, good place for a date because you can actually hear what everyone at the table is saying.
- Pros: Really good sushi, big sashimi portions, quiet
- Cons: Service could be quicker but not a big issue
FOOD NOT BAD....SERVICE HORRIBLE
by phelaon
My food didn't taste that bad, however the service was not good at all. When you pay $ 16 for a meal, the person serving you should understand what you and your family are ordering. This is after all America, where the language is English, if someone wants to open a "service oriented" biz, they should at least understand English. Our waitress didn't even know what was on their own menu. With all the choices in Austin to eat....I wouldn't waste your time or your money going to this place
- Pros: LOCATION
- Cons: SERVICE, FOOD, PRICE
Low Quality Food; Classless Ownership
by alrindfuss
My girlfriend, her cousins, and I met a friend, who had given the restaurant a lukewarm review, at Dragon's Gate for dinner. Our waitress was very friendly and eager to please, but no one was satisfied with the food, which ranged from dull to inedible. Of particular note was the sesame chicken, which, after having been assured it was chicken breast by our waitress, arrived as dark, gristly chunks of chicken detritus. My girlfriend and I gamely cut through each piece, in search of anything edible--no luck. We sent the plate back with our waitress, declining to order anything else. When the bill arrived, though, the sesame chicken was still on it. I assumed the owner would take care of it at the register, but she flatly refused, claiming--despite our waitress' attempts to vouch for us, that we were lying about not having eaten the meal. After discussing our eating habits with her husband, she discounted the meal (not the bill) by 30%--an insulting gesture, at best. Ashamed by the behavior of her classless and miserly employers, our waitress even chased us into the parking lot to try to return her tip. Needless to say, we are never going back, and would encourage you not to do business with these people.
- Pros: Friendly waitress.
- Cons: Terrible food; classless ownership.
AWESOME SUSHI!!!
by givemefoodnow
My boyfriend and I went there for the first time this past Saturday night and had a wonderful time. The sashimi was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! We also had the Tiffany Roll (which I highly recommend to those who like salmon and unagi) and some chinese dishes. The chinese food was average but the sushi was mouthwateringly delicious! The service was great also. Our waitress never left us feeling unattended and was very attentive and courteous. Couldn't have asked for better service. We will definately be coming back here and i'm recommending this place to all of my friends.
- Pros: Sushi, Service, Price (for the quality of sushi)
- Cons: Chinese food pretty average, but I guess that's not really a con
