Doug and his crew are the best painters we have hired and we've had several. We had a neighbors tree fall on our house and scratch up the side pretty good. Doug not only fixed and painted it, but he did it in a matter of two days. I couldn't believe it when I looked outside the first day of work to see 15 guys working away on my house. Two days seemed maybe a little to fast for it to be a good job, but I'm telling you it was done right the first time and looks amazing. Thanks Doug!
Pros: Listens to what it is you want do and gets it done.
Cons: You get what you pay for.

What can you say about a painting contractor who hand washes your home and windows before ever putting paint to surface, uses the best materials, has the aesthetic sense of Michaelangelo, and has the most capable, professional, personable and friendly crews in Austin? As if that were not enough Doug Gorton offers a two year warranty on his work, coming back to touch up deterioration that you find during that period. When Doug was recommended to me by my employer, I was doubtful that this contractor would be more than just "he's good." When I first met Doug he was so personable and offered so many great suggestions like faux graining my garage doors and trim, offering to paint my neighbor's house just to make mine show better, and explaining his warranty that i was immediately won over. Absolutely everything that he promised he delivered. But best of all was the reaction of my neighbors: they loved the finished product as much as I did. I can say with absolute confidence that I have the most beautiful (really!) and durable paint job in my neighborhood. I only wish the homeowners who live in University Hills could see Doug's work because they found this recommendation. Their paint is OK but mine is FABULOUS!.

I had a big project with lots of old paint scrapping and detailed window work. Any time I had a concern, Doug was always there to address it and get his men back on track. His workers work well together and do a great job. He'll definatly be my go to guy for painting in the future. Plus, his workers clean up ALL their trash and take it with them -- (if you have had lots of contractors at your house, you know this is a plus)
Pros: Great outcome for the dollar

I've done a lot of work to my 1920's bungalow since I bought it 15 years ago, so I've dealt with a lot of contractors, good and bad. These guys were professional, did the job right, on time. Doug is also personable and knowledgeable, and had a lot of great ideas. I'll call them again when I need some painting.

IN SUMMARY -- the Nordstrom of painting companies * Totally committed to 100% satisfaction - over-the-top in attention to detail, super nice and great about my picky list of things to do at the end - they even went around the house and found areas I missed and took care of them, which was an unexpected bonus * Knowledgeable, trustworthy and honest - meet Doug and his team and you know you can trust them to do a great job and do it right * More than painting - Doug's crew fixed 18 saltillo tiles on my front porch, which now looks amazing better after suffering deep cracks from a shifting foundation on an old house - I can't tell you how happy I am to have a fixed porch, and it was so nice to feel like the entire house was getting a facelift from one team rather than 3 different companies. THE DETAILS -- Doug and team worked on our house for a week and transformed it to look like a new home (it was built in 1939). They handwashed the roof, entire house, carport and windows and even I was amazed at how much better it looked. They took their time to scrape our gables and got *all* of the old paint off - the gables were in such bad shape I'd had two other bids who said they couldn't be repainted well and should just be replaced. Doug promised it was doable and it was -- after they were done, it looks beautiful. All of the touch-ups on the windows and doors were great and at the last minute I remembered that one window used to open that they had painted shut, so they were very cool about jimmying it open and then repainting it so that it looked ok. The same team was there all week, and they came at the same time every morning and worked quickly and cleaned up well every night. I was so happy to have the house done on a Friday afternoon knowing it was entirely done and nothing was left. I am very happy and I highly recommend!
Pros: High quality work, trustworthy, honest, great to work with
Cons: None

I stumbled across Doug Gorton while trying to to find a good painter in Austin. I kept asking friends for references but all of them would say "well I used another painter but I would NOT recommend them again". Even my contractor friends could not provide references they fully endorsed. On this particular job I actually had the work started by two other painters both of whom were much cheaper. The first one washed my house and then disappeared... never returned any of my phone calls. The second one started the work but when I inspected what he had done for prep work compared to what he said he would do, I paid him a days wages and fired him. After the two previous experiences, I went back to Doug.... not sure he would even work with me after rejecting his bids the two previous times. His bid was more expensive then the first two painters and he promised to do all kinds of prep work before he even started. After bad experiences with the first two painters I had some doubt as to whether Doug was exaggerating what he would actually do. Even with some doubt, I decided to use him. It was the best decision I ever made. Doug did exactly what he promised. His crew spent 3+ days just prepping the house before even starting to paint. Their workmanship was perfect and reminded me of what I would expect from a trades person in the old days (ie. similar to a good painter friend that spend his life painting and was a perfectionist). The crew of three people (lead person and two helpers) worked extremely well together. They all worked hard and for the FULL day, every day. Very different from what I had experienced with other painters. Koda the lead person on my job was excellent and I would have him paint my house any day of the week. If you want a high quality paint job.... use Doug and you will not be sorry. If you figure out the $/hr of work, Doug's higher prices actually turn out to be a bargain for the work done.
Pros: Excellent prep and quality of workmanship.
Cons: None.

Doug's crew did fantastic preparation prior to painting our house... scraping, spackling, replacing rotted siding, etc. This attention to detail resulted in a great looking house that's going to stay that way. If you have an older house, Doug's crew is what you need.
Pros: Great attention to detail
Cons: Good work doesn't come cheap

I have a lot of experience with construction disputes, and flaky contractors, because I’m an attorney and deal with those issues every day. I wanted a contractor who was professional, who showed up until the job was finished, and who did it right. I couldn’t be happier with Doug Gorton and his crew. We chose Yolo Colorhouse® paint for our hallway and little Yolo for the bedroom that will become our nursery. Yolo Colorhouse is a Zero VOC paint that is Green Seal certified, which means it’s been tested by an independent non-profit to verify that the product meets the manufacturer’s claims. The Yolo Colorhouse® paint colors are fantastic and we could not be happier with the colors on the walls. The paint samples have wonderful descriptions that are very helpful in deciding what color to choose. When Doug Gorton’s crew painted our hallway, a bedroom, and the closet doors, there was no smell of paint fumes, an especially important factor since my wife is pregnant. Doug’s crew is professional and hardworking. They immediately start work and continue working until there is nothing left to do. They did an excellent job protecting the wood floors, and other surfaces to prevent accidental painting, and the cleaned up any drips or splatters. Ours is an old house full of the typical imperfections found in old houses. When Doug came back to look at the job, he wasn’t happy with the trim around one of the doors (which was not part of their scope of work). He asked if he could fix that trim for me, because it looked terrible next to the new paint job. The next morning, Doug’s crew showed back up and touched up virtually all areas of the job, including the trim that was never part of their work. You get what you pay for, and in this case, you get a professional painting crew who will do the job right, and who will go above and beyond what you might expect.

We received two quotes on painting the outside of our house and some rooms on the inside of our house. Even though the first quote was a lot cheaper, after reading what Doug Gorton's team did and what the other painter's crew would do, we decided along with our gut feeling, that we would go with Doug Gorton. Doug's team washed the outside of the house with a bleach/clorax water mix which did not hurt any of our landscaping but was very good at getting rid of any mildew which was on the eaves. They also scrapped and sanded all surfaces getting rid of all loose paint and dirt. Then they painted the outside and the crew worked so well together, that the outside of the house was completed within one day (house has brick on 3 sides). They cleaned up so you could not tell there was painting which had been done and they worked well together. I did not have to worry about whether or not the job would get done, if the paint crew would be there late in the day or anything. They came and went straight to work. We also had them paint the inside of our house including our kitchen. We used the brand of paint which we had used in the rest of the house except for the kitchen we went with Doug Gorton's recommendation of using a new type of paint from Benjamin Moore called Aura which is a self priming paint. We used this paint in the kitchen and the kitchen looks really great. We also found out after receiving the Good Housekeeping magazine that the new paint has the Good Housekeeping seal of approval. The crew came on time, worked right through lunch to get the job done, was no nonsense, when moving the items off the walls to paint the inside of the rooms in the house they were very careful moving all the figurines (Hummels), put all the furniture back and all the paintings, figurines, and other knick knacks we had on the wall back, all I had to do was sit and watch TV. When we need to repaint our house in 6-8 yrs from now, we will call Doug Gorton and have him do it.
