The sushi is very fresh and at a good price. The pad thai is also a favorite. I got hooked on this place when I was working with Relay For Life. Chon Som had a team and the visits started there. A great place, great food and people who get involved in the community and really give back. What is not to love?

Pros: Great Food!

Cons: none

My husband and I went there for a late lunch after reading all the great reviews here. When we got there is was empty which was not a good sign. We should have left immediately but decided to stay since we were hungry after the 30 minute drive it took us to get there. We ordered rolls and nigiri. After a dreadfully long wait, mind you there was no one there, our sushi arrived. The rice was undercooked and the fish was beyond dead. It didn't have the oily sheen on top like fresh sushi should instead the color looked flat and dry. The rolls arrived after waiting an eternity and what we typically expect from the staple rolls we'd get looked awfully peculiar. For instance, the spicy scallop roll was surely spicy but there wasn't a morsel of scallop visible. My husband and I tried everything but I left my all time favorite: ikura. Since my 2-yr stay in Tokyo I've acquired a keen taste for the perfect ikura. When the waiter brought it over, I had one look at it and decided to pass. Each egg looked half cooked and didn't have the shiny, translucent, burnt orange color I expected. My husband had a piece before I could stop him. He's in bed now with stomach cramps. I can't speak for their cooked Thai food but I'd go somewhere else for sushi.

Pros: plenty of parking; convenient for the folks up north

Cons: bad sushi

I had a Pad Thai to go. It was good other than the fact it had a metallic tinge to the food. It was probably the fork I was using. Service was prompt, portions large, and I feel that the meal was a deal for the money. Interesting place.

We went here with a group of ten people for a birthday and they were so accommodating. I found them through citysearch and the food was delicious and well presented. You could tell a lot of work went into the preparation. The fried calamari was delicious and all the sauces were as well. Everyone was happy with their meal. The owners came and spoke with us after our meal and were sooo very nice, they alone would make you want to go back! Oh and the birthday girl got free saki bombs, which was unexpected and just another example of how the atmosphere was basically "we're all family here." I loved it and everyone can't wait to go back for the next birthday!

Pros: Food, The owners, bathrooms were immaculate!

Cons: Wish it was closer to downtown

I went with my family for the sushi happy hour and the sushi was awful. it was warm and mushy, not fresh at all.

This is great thai food and friendly staff. The decor is oddly stark and modern but still comfortable. Try the tempura or thom ka gai.

I heard about Chon Som from three different people about 2 months ago...so my Husband took me and the girls out for a Sunday Brunch. I Loved it. The sushi was Amazing... and my young girls enjoyed Egg Rolls and Soup! My husband and I went back on an evening date more recently, and had another great experience. We had a wonderul date, and the Delicious food and polite Waiter at Chon Som made it one to remember.

Pros: Great Sushi, friendly staff, relaxed environment

I am looking for excellent Thai cuisine in Austin and I still have not found it. I drove from South Austin in search of what the reviews say is the best Thai in Austin. I was one of two tables seated on a Saturday night at 7:30pm, not very comforting. I first tried a couple of sushi rolls. They were good and fresh, but not outstanding. I still like Suzi's Rollingwood the best of all. I then ordered Pad Thai and Beef Massuman Curry. The Pad Thai was good but nothing outstanding and the Beef Curry was flavorful, but could have been mistaken for beef soup. There was a lot of sauce! I have had GREAT Thai food in Houston, New York, San Francisco and even Frankfurt. I am disappointed that in a city with as many Asian people as we have, we do not have GREAT Thai food! Don't get me wrong. This place is clean and the food is good, but average good.

Pros: Good

Cons: Not GREAT!

The cuisine (notice I did not say food) was exquisite. My only issue with out visit was the service. I was having a bad day, so I certainly will not hold it against them. With only three tables present when we arrived, our greet time was a little long. Our appetizer arrived with our entree which annoyed me and the high-ball glasses jammed packed full of ice did not leave much room for iced tea. However, I said I was cranky that evening so ignore that part. The great part was the crisp tasty Gyoza (dumplings). We chose pork for our filling. They were crispy on the outside and filled with yummy stuff on the inside. I had the Tofu Pad Thai. It was a little spicy, which I like. The tofu was a little chewy, but the flavors were awesome. My dinner partner had the red curry chicken. It could have used a little more kick, but every Thai place is different and you are always cautious about ordering too hot. We did not have room to try the sushi, but it looked great and reasonably priced. Wells Branch has had little mom and pop Asians restaurantts pop up all over, Thai/Pan Asian is what we were missing. Try it as soon as you can. Just don't follow suit and go in a cranky mood.

Pros: Great food for a reasonable price. Less than $30 for appetizer and dinner for 2.
