discrimination?

by amontano88

my friend and i visited cielo for the first time this weekend he is gay and im sure everybody could see that. He tried to dance on one of the stages but as soon as he got up there he got asked to get down what i didnt understand was why one of the girls that was showing half her butt was not asked to come down if i wanted a strip show i would have gone else where.

  • Pros: great music

fun place but nothing extraordinary

by perfectfitwhit

I'm a little confused by this place. Granted, I am from MIami so I have high expectations for clubs when it comes to dance music. This place is pretty strange. Most of the club you can't even see the DJ, dance floor is exceptionally small, the VIP section is a complete waste of money.

Not all bad though- service is great! The bartenders are quick and friendly and the drink prices are very good. They book great artists, I just wish it was easier to enjoy the DJs that do show up. I also really enjoy the other patrons. I've made quite a few friends there and it seems no one goes to Sky in a bad mood!

  • Pros: service, ambience, great DJs, fun people
  • Cons: strange layout, music never loud enough

Lovely Staff & Entertainment

by mouse39

The staff @ this club really is great. If you are kind to them, they are kind to you. If you act like a bigshot & are just trying to get in free.. they could care less if you attend. The people that come to dance & support the events and dj's are the best! and there are alot of them!.. Most people don't realize what kind of stress goes into hosting such large events. The staff of sky & the others (Eternal Network & staff) work very hard to provide Austin with good music & a good experience.. they do a great job of it!

  • Pros: Big shows & good people!
  • Cons: Hefty cover charge... but well worth it

Owner rude, Door lady rude . . . paid two covers to be in the place for less than five minutes.

by sickstringc

I walked in at 9:40 p.m. tonight, paid $40 cover for my girlfriend and I to get in to a show that was advertised as beginning at 10:00 p.m. and found that the entertainment would not be performing until 12:00 a.m. We used the restroom and immediately reconsidered staying for 2 hours to see a show we'd planned on leaving around the time we came to find it was going to begin and asked the door person for our money back (the place had less than 20 people inside). She was rude, but got the owner. I asked the owner for a reimbursement of our cover charges given the fact we had been in the establishment for less then 5 minutes and he then proceeded to explain that had we been there for less than five minutes (as if to imply that we had been there longer) he would refund our money, but because it was already in the register, he would not grant the request. I began to argue the point that I had just mentioned that we were there not more than five minutes when the bouncers began to close in. I removed the band that had been placed on my wrist and threw it in the club owners face. The proprietors of Sky Lounge can keep my $40 and i'll never be back and I hope others read this and are put off by a club owner that, during SXSW, would refuse to refund a cover charge under such circumstances. If I ever go back, it will be because I am going to see an artist that simply does not come and perform locally at any other establishment.

  • Pros: The DJ's they mangage to get in the door.
  • Cons: The money grubbing owner.

terrible venue if you want to dance, esp. if you want to hear a big name dj

by atxgirl5

tried sky lounge tonight for sasha -- BIG DISAPPOINTMENT -- small dance floor, speakers only surrounded dance floor, people ribbing you constantly, ridiculous dress code. cooler than thou attitude.

my suggestion to sky lounge -- get better speakers and extend them to other areas if you expect to host big name electro shows. otherwise you are going to DISAPPOINT your dancers.

pros: nice bartenders, good drink specials. that's about it. sorry.

  • Pros: ok bartenders, good drink specials
  • Cons: TERRIBLE club for dancing until they improve sound in other areas

Hotspot for Live Eletronic Music

by sidjohn1

Sky Lounge is Austin's hotspot for live eletronic music, if you love house, trance or just follow the hotest global dj's this multilevel venue is the place for you. The crowd is typically classy and up for a good time & the bartenders are always HOT.

The Place to be!

by downtownman23

just wanted to let all the progressive dance music fans know that Sky Lounge is the place to be. Been to Dallas and San Antonio for many shows but Sky is the place to be for the ultimate dance experience! The place is awesome, love the light show and the sound system. They always have the best Djs spinning. Don't know what people see when they go in there but i think the management is doing a great job. I actually met Eli, the general manager, i think the guy knows very well what's going on and how to operate. The Bartenders also did a good job. It did get a little hot in there but i guess when you have that many people, there's not much that can be done. Sky Lounge Rocks!

Nice place - decent music

by veccio

I definitely like the place and am prepared to go back for other shows. Just make sure that you use cash and not a tab as the place can get busy and mistakes do happen from time to time ...

  • Pros: Ambience, Music, Crowd
  • Cons: A few unprofessional bartenders

Horrible Promotion

by serenaillauer

I am very disappointed with this place. Whoever the promoters are need to be shot. First of all we bought VIP tickets for almost $80 and when we got there we were informed that there was no VIP and no free drink. Okay fine, we love John Digweed enough to put up with that. I just looked at my bank account. They charged our credit card $50 MORE than what we had for drinks!! We are going to try and contact someone about this but I am sure because they are so shady we will get no help.

  • Pros: John Digweed was great.
  • Cons: Terrible promotion and got charged more money than spent.

Since making the previous post, I have spoken with Eli of Sky Lounge who assures me that the incident will be handled harshly.
