Trailer Food: South Austin Meals on the Go
By Johnny Wells, Austin Contributor
There was a time when it would be hard to call yourself a foodie if you lived in the 78704 zip code. Now fine dining is a given, but South Austin's "bubba" history has spawned a unique collection of trailers serving up quality food. For a distinctive afternoon date, we set about on a progressive multi-course dinner though some of the highlights.
-
Baby Greens
2316 S First St, Austin, TX
Some drive-through windows still reign, and we started our date off by picking up a cobb salad and a couple of waters to go. The bleu cheese dressing is fresh and makes the perfect complement to the big salad's green-leaf lettuce, bacon, avocados and carrots. -
Flip Happy Crepes
400 Jessie St, Austin, TX
Once we wrapped up our salad, we sped over to the trailer nestled a couple of blocks west of South Lamar. After we ordered our crepes, we settled in for the leisurely wait until they were ready--French food can't be rushed. I ordered the Ham and gruyere cheese with green onions while my date got roasted vegetables with feta buttermilk sauce. Très Magnifique! -
Torchy's Tacos
1207 S 1st St, Austin, TX
From one cultural staple to another, we headed over to Torchy's trailer on South Lamar and Gibson. I couldn't pass up the themed items and ordered the trailer park taco, stuffed with fried chicken and green chiles. Choosing a much more respectable option, my date settled in with the baja shrimp. We snagged a table by the creekside and kicked back and watched some of the creatures of South Austin graze. -
Hey Cupcake
1600 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX
Ready for dessert, we stopped off at the shiny Airstream on South Congress and wrapped up our meal with a Sweet Leaf Tea and some decadent black forest cupcakes.
